For anyone wondering why I say the hotmelt bond is temporary yet use it on vinyl motorcycle seats I should have clarified that in my experience over many years, the bond is temporary on wood in a damp environment because wood absorbs moisture and shrinks and expands and there is little fibre penteration of the glue but with a fabric backed vinyl cloth a different glue stick is used and the glue penterates into the fabric weave. My cafe racer motorycle seat is still intact well over ten years on.
One awesome feature is to cheaply make some electronics water resistant, the glue is not conductive so it won't short the circuits.
+LiPe VoLcOm Yes, that's one of the uses that was on my radar. I have also seen many small circuit boards attached with just hot glue. No need for screws, pillars etc. And it insulates. Great stuff. ATB Rob
+LiPe VoLcOm Hotglue doesn't actually flow all that well, it might form an air gap around components and allow water to come in or condensate but never to come out. It's rarely an issue. But i recommend clear fingernail varnish instead or as an extra preparation step.

Jeremy, for years I had little respect or use for glue guns and thought they were for ladies craft projects. That was because I never used one. When I was making underwater video camera housings I did a lot of experimenting and I found hot glue was one of the only adhesives that would attach pvc parts to polyethylene . Like you, I found it was perfectly suited for prototypes. In particular, with small items that might need to be taken apart, when the item is frozen, the glued parts separate much easier than with other glues. There are also glue sticks that use different temperatures.
Finally, if you have a glue stick, a candle can be used to heat the tip when in an area without electricity to heat the glue so you can still make repairs in primitive conditions.
All my years wood working and gluing projects or pieces and it never dawned on me to use hot glue in the center around normal wood glue too speed up the progress.. Truly A amazing Idea.. Ty for sharing this with us...

I am a carpenter/joiner and have been using a hot melt glue gun for many years in a similar fashion to you. Temporary quick positional clamping is a must for speed when on site fixing paneling and crown molding etc'! It provides that third hand that all artisans so often wish for when cost effectiveness doesn't allow for a labourer! So helpful all round really and with two young children it really comes into its own with the multitude of toy repairs that I find myself extending to! +arfonia Thanks for that. Appreciation makes it worthwhile. Well I guess its called democracy and one of the mysteries of RUclips! I was pleasantly surprised this video seems to have struck a chord with a lot of people (as it is hit and miss) and I suppose it is a percentages game that if say nearly 10K people have taken the effort to click the Like button then 5% will for whatever reason click the Dislike button. My own guess is apart from the serial trolls, people who dislike a video have a specific expectation and if the video falls short they quite annoyed. I only remove abusive comments but I greatly appreciate the mainstream positive comments. I have 400 videos uploaded and there are two or three I removed because there were more Dislikes (under 10) than Likes so I assumed the video misfired. Its a learning curve for everybody. I follow some top gypsy jazz channels and some of the comments about world class guitarists are so are abusive I am surprised they have not been removed by the channel owners but that is RUclips for you! When using hot glue to temporarily mount a work piece, lay down some painters tape on the work piece and the mounting surface and put the hot glue on the tape. The tape (when applied over a wide surface area) has plenty of shear adhesive strength to hold the work piece, it just needs a solid bond to the anchor surface, which the hot glue provides.

I use it to cover tiny tack and brad heads or holes, with wite-out, for a quick fix.

Great stuff. I use hot melt all the time, and I use denatured alcohol to release the bond, and clean the glue off of parts.
When using hot glue to temporarily clamp a work piece to a bench top (or CNC table etc) apply packing tape to both surfaces wherever the hot glue will be applied. The glue will hold firmly but will pop loose easily when the piece is pried up. If you need to keep it level, use washers as spacers to control how far the hot glue compresses.

I've got an 805-15 (15mm stick). The 805's run at 200c, so yeah, it'll leave a scar for a few months. Power Adhesives (TEC), Surebonder, and Ad Tech also make a wide range of sticks and formulations for more specific applications, including ones specifically for wood. Their spec sheets show exactly what temp it softens at, melts (opens), and its viscosity. They make different tips like a wide and thin spread, but I find the stock tip works just fine for almost everything from building heavy duty shipping boxes to small projects and repairs.

For an extremely strong bond, I preheat both surfaces to be glued with a hot air gun. You have to wait longer for the glue to set, but the bond is much stronger.
You can also use a propane torch to preheat some plastics. The outward part of the flame changes the surface to be glued, so that the glue sticks much better, as well as helping with heating. Do not touch it. Using a torch to preheat, I have hot glued a PVC pipe to a plastic 5 gallon bucket. On testing the bond, the bucket wall broke before the glue let go. I have also used this technique to get a variety of glues to bond to rotomolded poly kayaks and canoes..

I liked your useful ideas for the hot glue. If you use high temp glue, there are silicon finger tip covers that are excellent protection against burns without sacrificing tactile sensitivity. They can be found in craft stores.

I've got the same glue gun had it for two years now one of the best tools in my arsenal, great video Jeremy very informative, got my gun from Kenyons Oldham, good service even took me in the back to let me try some different glue sticks, I'm a decorator and us it a lot on my job, but I do a bit of origami and have been making roses out of heavy gauge Italian crepe paper and it does the trick a treat 👍🏻🇬🇧👍🏻

+John Carey Yes I will when I can find time to explore that. Viewers have already commented on how useful hotmelt glue is for insulating and securing electrics, something I missed. There used to be a flexible moulding rubber when I worked with plastics but hotmelt glue does it perfectly and you can let layers cool then build up more but don't do a mould of your face!

But actually I am happy with the way my own channel is developing not least because of the feedback of individuals like you! Yes there are different styles of film making. This subject screams at being filmed more creatively than it often is and I intend improving my videos as resources allow me. Its not just about slick HD but using the medium of film to communicate ideas. I am self taught but had four days working with a broadcast television crew so I learned what I needed to know. The hardest challenge is keeping on topic at the right pace and keep videos short!

I'm still healing a September-16-2015 scar from hot glue, from trying to use a lighter, and not noticing the clear melted glue. When I typed this, it has been around 4 months. Be careful with hot glue and consider wearing leather gloves if it doesn't cause you to lose dexterity. Maybe use deer-skin gloves if dexterity is needed. It's better to ruin a good pair of gloves than a good pair of hands.
+Jay H In a pinch, I've even used a cheap pair of disposable nitrile gloves. I imagine latex would work too, if you don't have anything else. You can expect them to be ruined afterward, but they're cheap, and can give you enough protection and feeling for the heat, to be useful and get a quick job completed, while still helping you avoid any burns.
+floobertuber Personally I would avoid wearing gloves when woodworking. We've all been burned. I just take a lot of care and that is what woodworking is about. For seasoned woodworkers like me the biggest problem is breaking the habit of immediately wiping glue off.

Very interesting. Glue can get hot enough to distort plastics as well, which I think is worth mentioning. Had a "drop" drop on my fingers whilst holding a delicate object between finger and thumb. It then dropped through the hole but I still had two fingers in the way! All I could do was count to ten - slowly and suffer the nasty burn thereafter!

At work I had a plastic corner that kept dropping down the wall and eventually fell off. I tried all kinds of glues but nothing was working.... I brought my hot glue gun to the job and gave it a try. it is still in place for 6 months now!
I have same experiences about the longevity of hot glue joints. It just peals off after some time. I have used hot melt glue mostly to fix wires in place on printed wiring boards and also other PWB fixes.

My late grandmother used to work at Houston Sash and Door back in the early 1970's and she once brought home a HUGE, I mean 20-30mm round (about 1.5 inch), brownish glue stick they used to make the cabinetry and that stuff stuck so well you had to break it off. I have yet to find anything like this since then.

I try to remember to wet my finger before wiping away excess hot glue.
You'll be wetting your finger for days - immersing it in water to prevent the oxygen getting in the pain starting!!
The thumbnail shows a cordless hotmelt gluegun which a commenter (below) tells me isn't featured in my video. This wasn't deliberately misleading 'clickbait' on my part but an oversight. The cordless version was not available when I made this video but the image was the most striking I had at hand when I updated the thumbnail later!
