After I put my first Rolex on my wrist, I didn't feel any different. I didn't think people took me more seriously. It didn't change me at all. It was just a watch. A really, really good automatic watch. Thanks for the content.

hyperchord I just watched this video and reading some funny comments. When I put my Sub Date on I turn into Superman able to leap tall buildings in a singe bound. And when I put on my Pepsi I turn into Dr Strange all mystical and whatnot. Lol. The watch world is sooooooooo kool.

Same thing happened to me with a Sub , the real state crisis hit , I lost my almost paid off car to my friends from Citi Bank and I ended up trading my Sub for a 50 000 miles , pristine , Nissan Altima 2.5 SL . At the end of the day , you can't drive a Rolex to work .

I drive a bus, wear clothes I've had for twenty or more years stuff like old jeans, sweatpants, T-shirts past expiration dates, shoes that a homeless person would refuse, BUT I walk around with a four, six and even a ten thousand dollar watch. Damn I like that.

Anytime I listen to one of your videos, I’m struck by what a natural coach you are. There was a time when I hated the term, “life coach”, but I’ve come to realize that it’s just another term for mentor. And coaching is the kind of mentoring I respond best to. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into these. I appreciate it far more than I can eloquently say.

Thanks for the video about your experiences.
I have noticed many people buy Rolex and other high-end luxury goods solely for the status and prestige. I have bought Orient, Oris, and IWC; yet, my friends question why did not I buy Rolex? I don't want to buy to please others or I won't be happy about my purchases. I buy what speaks to me and me alone.

When I first started investigating watches and time-pieces? I listened to this channel, and a trading mate of mine who is an incredible horologist who is also a huge Rolex fan. That's exactly what he had mentioned to me. Everyone fawns over Rolex as a status symbol, but to a true horologist who dives into every aspect of the movement and the time-piece themselves, there is a very real reason that Rolex holds it's value so well. And it's not as much it's brand image (though that's part of it), .... but the reason they are so highly regarded, is the tiny details that matter and add up over time. The completely new alloys that they reveal to no one, simply to make one small touch of the piece, that much better. The quality of the piece. Whatever everyone thinks of Rolex? Screw em'. Wear them because of the work of art that they are, and learn that aspect of the time-piece, rather than silly perceived 'status'

Hi J. , I'm in my mid 50's, and a successful small business owner. Living in Alaska, no place for fancy clothes or expensive shoes, we are grounded by our environment and wear comfortable clothes based on weather, location etc. , not for style. Wore Casio watches.I did start becoming a watch enthusiast a few years ago, watching vids, internet articles, etc... All my research attracted me to Rolex, not for status but build quality, and rugged toughness. I own a Rolex Explorer II polar, and a DSSD Cameron. Love them both greatly. You influenced me to look at Seiko. I read everything I could about Grand Seiko, always a fan with much respect for Japanese culture and much impressed with the sense of pride they apply to their craftmanship. I wanted a GMT watch, and purchased the GS GMT high beat SBGJ001, white dial, blue 24 hour hand. Just love the watch. There is a place for Rolex in everyone's watch collection....and Seiko too.

Excellent Video and great philosophy. A few months ago, I chanced to see a foto of Roger Federer. All suited up and with a glimpse of a Daytona under the cuff. Here, I thought, is a man of modern times who has actually managed to dwarf the legendary Daytona. Suddenly a lot of perceptions changed. The things we own should ideally be an extension of who we are rather than them trying to define us.

  • @johnconstantine1856

At one time, buying a Rolex mean't a lot to me. Now that I have one, it's really not a big deal, it's just another watch. I have gotten it out of my system. Now i realize, I don't care for luxury goods anymore.
I am becoming more and more minimalist and to be honest it feels liberating. Status is overrated.

I'm 58 years old and a novice watch collector. Only watches that personally please me with their aesthetics and practicality. Nothing yet over $300.00. Rotating them periodically so I may enjoy them all and stretch out their usable life. Occasionally I enjoy giving one away to an appreciated younger male friend. Having no sons as heirs this is what I enjoy. This is the first time I have commented on your topic of choice because this one really resonated with me. Its interesting listening to younger men in their evolution into maturity. You seem to still be influenced by those "teenage years". Believe me as an older man to younger man your ideas and attitudes will change greatly over the next ten years as they apparently have over the last ten years. I've enjoyed your channel over the last few months and its been informative and please don't stop. You are obviously passionate about you hobby/investment and your willingness to share this online is admirable. But there are more important ambitions for a man than wealth and material goods and I think deep down you are aware of this point. As men you and I both know " the most important things in life can't be bought" and unless one will acquiesce can never be taken away. Once you truly see and understand those "important things" you'll see the true value of those material goods. You've probably heard the phrase " you get what you pay for". Question is what are you really paying for? Good luck on your journey.

I agree with you. I also like expensive things, and Rolex is absolutely one of them. For me owning a Rolex is not something that I want others to recognize but rather something that I just want to personally enjoy. There are even people who I would rather not know that I own a Rolex such as older members of my non-immediate family (aunts, uncles, etc.) who may be judgemental without knowing the whole story (a story that I feel I don't really need to explain). In many ways I hate the fact that Rolex is 'one of those prestigious things' because I really appreciate the watches for what they are and enjoy very little about the recognition and status that they bring. I guess what I'm saying is I really like the finer things in life, things that are made with exceptional quality and attention to detail but I definitely do not want to 'show off.'

You said that you saw people who were much more excited than you, at certain things that seemed so meaningless to you. I think that's the best way to summarize a lot of the insecurities people have, and it's true for me, and I imagine for many people also. I've felt some sort of distorted superiority over someone wearing a Nixon, but it doesn't make me better than them, and in the end it's just shallow, when I finally realized that I wouldn't have wanted to be judged by the way I was judging others. And I think we get so caught up in this when we see others with stuff we want. I wish I could be as happy as I was with my first automatic watch, it was kinda tacky, plated gold, and a few hundred dollars, but it mesmerized me, and I sold it thinking that I deserved something better. And I think that's the saddest thing, and I think I didn't even deserve what I had at the time. Thanks for the video, it's very honest, and I hope people learn as much about themselves as I did over time and also from this video.

  • @benearl1651

Great candid video. For sure, life is a journey! I have also had various stages in my life where I have found my behaviour or ideas not to be who I think I really am anymore. Its great to see your growth and that you are appreciating things for what they are.
I love my watches but have always thought of Rolexes as douchy adornments for wannabes but recently I am seeing their qualities and certainly appreciate their heritage. I probably will never own one but I have also grown up a bit and don't judge people because I see them wearing a Rolex.
Keep up the real videos! and keep being true to yourself, whatever that is, you will be so much happier in life without the internal conflict that posing and posturing creates.

  • @isthataj

I was one of those kids, everything was given to me by my parents, my Louis Vuitton luggage, my watches, and my first BMW, too but I have never considered those things as 'status symbol' and I don't think my parents bought them just so that people with less fortune would be jealous of us. We buy 'fancy stuff' just because we like them a lot, for that reason everything we buy, we take care of them and treasure them very much, I still travel with those Louis Vuitton luggage even when some of them are nearly 20 years old.
The watch which I bought with my very own money was a Pulsar V657-X012 Chronograph. It is 17 years old and gold tone is worn off miserably, but the watch is as precious to me as my Rolex Yachtmaster which was given to me. I still wear that watch from time to time, though I accidentally fried its movement when I was rinsing it under running water after cleaning it with chemicals. I ordered a replacement movement (seiko vd57) and new cheapy mineral crystal to fix it so that I'll be able to wear it again.
What I meant to say is, buy and wear what ever makes you feel happy/fulfilled at that moment. If it happens to be a Rolex & Armani suits today, then go for it, if you in a mood for a $100 quartz watch & GAP clothes tomorrow, then do it. The point is, you are living for your happiness, you aren't living to impress people around. There is nothing wrong with changing your mind or changing your personal preference back and forth. ;-) For me, wearing the cheap Pulsar Chrono with cheap clothes from Macy's makes me as happy as wearing my Rolex & clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue.

      @rumporridge1 7 лет назад

Alex J Christensen well said Alex. But jeez i look really high class in my Macy's suits lol. They go very well with my Sub Date. And most can't tell the brand of suit anyway. Just like most won't notice my Pepsi either.

Nice one. It sounds to me like a process of maturation and individuation - becoming your own person, regardless of external or internal pressures. The key is enjoyment - being your own person, and enjoying watches for what they are, rather than as false grails or surrogates for a fulfillment that cannot be found through material possessions.
Insecurity is a huge factor, I think, and is why a lot of watch collectors buy into the "There's One True Way to Collect Watches" mentality, which I've talked about quite a bit on my channel. This has been my issue with Rolex - not the watch or company itself, which as you say is a very high quality product - but the meaning attached to it by folks who seem to require some kind of external hierarchy to gain validation from (and thus it isn't an issue with Rolex at all).
What I like about what you are saying here is that you came back to Rolex through appreciation of the watches themselves - their quality, not their place in some kind of hierarchy. In other words, for you it wasn't "All roads lead to Rolex, and everything else is dogshit," but "my path led me back to Rolex, but with a new perspective."

Thanks for sharing your story. At the end of the day, for me, it's all about what brings the most joy. People think i'm crazy for spending so much money on an 09 WR250R to have it completely rebuilt, up-bored, ported, dyno tuned with a full custom suspension when I could just get a KTM530 for the same price. That's not the point. The point is that there's a story behind it all, involving many journeys, blood, sweat, tears and crashes. Doing so has high-value to me. My bikes have high-value to me. I don't know where tf I am going with this because I lost my train of thought. lol.

I do think that like you in the beginning, people buy material things to bring some sort of fulfillment that they cannot get from within or on their own from experiences and social interactions rather than from material things. Nothing material will ever make you happy if you cannot be happy with having little to nothing. I collect watches, I have a few Rolex watches and like you say I appreciate them for their history and for the added pleasure I get when I put one on. Cheers.

My Rolex story was similar to yours. I actually was embarrassed to wear it out in public, and I felt obligated to wear it over the 25 or so less expensive watches that I had in my collection at the time. I was also more afraid to scratch it or lose it than I was a simple Seiko 5. And honestly, although it was a great watch, looking at it objectively, it didn't seem any better than my Steinhart or other divers that I owned in the $350-500 price range. I'm not knocking anyone who likes owning a Sub, but I personally didn't get the feeling of owning a Sub that I always believed I would. That's when I began to realize that I enjoyed owning a variety of lower to mid-tier watches rather than a high-end watch. I was actually happy to let it go, and it freed up money that I was able to use to buy three more great watches.

Very true. Bought originally for principly aspirational reasons although didn't fully admit this... You soon realise that you've bought a good watch that comes with a very large price tag .. That had me questioning was it worth it..A watch in no way will change your life . I think if you purchase for the wrong reasons you will regret it sooner rather than later . Whatever we buy we should always buy for personal reasons and not to portrait an image ..Did a repurchase but this was for me and one else...

Interesting video on how we change as we go through life. I think Rolex is one of the watches that holds value so well because they hold the position as being known as a rich man's watch. Because of this they sell to watch people who enjoy what the watch is and they sell to the people that want recognized status. Show an average Joe a Vacheron Constantin and they won't bat an eye, but show them a Rolex Oyster Perpetual and they will think you are on top of the world.
I think many watch people start off wanting a Rolex at some point early on in their admiration for watches. For many, myself included, as they learn more about watches, they continue to appreciate Rolex watches, but they maybe lose their spot as being considered the best of the best or as a must own watch.

I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I don't come from money, and I appreciate watches from all the brands out there. But I suppose the Rolex stigma even affected me, as it took me ages to buy my first. I thought, "I can buy 2 or 3 Omega's for that price!". And yes, the Omega's are worth every penny, and so are Rolex's, Seiko's, TAGHeuer's, Jaeger's, IWC's, Cartier's, et al.

Thanks for sharing and putting this part of your life and watch collecting journey into perspective. I've no idea, or I've missed the SARB issue. I collect because I love what watches do, the micro mechanics, and what they are and symbolise as cultural ark facts. That's why I have some old and/or obscure brands along with a collection of modern watches. I've only ever bought what I can afford, but I'm a careful, even canny buyer. I've never owned a Rolex, though I could. I've seen and worn Rolex and they're good, maybe even great watches mostly. But, they're readily available on the whole, and as I e said, I like something a bit different and unique. I wear several watches each day, so they all get a wrist time. I look for some horological interest i. My watches, for value and features, accuracy and rarity or obscurity. That's just me. It's what I enjoy. Happy travels, and a good resolution to the SARB issue, if possible.

Bought a couple nice luxury watches. Finally bought a Rolex Subc and love it. The glidelock is absolutely amazing. When I put on a watch I always grab the sub now. Planning to sell off my other pieces and may get one more Rolex to switch it up. Thinking either Batman or Explorer II polar new model. Looked at GS, but resale is horrible. Even at used prices they don't sell fast. Great watch, but if I want to sell nothing seems to move quickly like a Rolex priced right.

Love your story. Sounds almost like a Buddhist journey. Giving up the trappings of a material lifestyle, and finding your true self. Once that is come of course, you can if you want, resume materialism, but on your own terms, and put in the proper perspective.

Great message. At times I will don the baseball hat and Hockey Jersey as well. But on the other side of the coin, I like the Armani's and Two Silk Twist Ties and French Cuff shirts. But that's what makes me comfortable and at ease. I'm at home in the office at the moment ... no one home but my wife, with dress pants, vest, and Armani dress shirt. But it has zero to do with lifestyle or who I associate with. I just like it. But it's a great message in the video because what one person may resonate to, and enjoy, another person may not. As the old saying goes, (sorta) ... let everyone do by them, and I'll do by me, and be happy that everyone is happy with that ... :)

I share your ambivalent feelings on Rolex. I admire the brand, their place in history and the quality of their manufacture. The Sub, at least, probably belongs in almost any well-rounded collection, but possibly 80-90% of the wearers don't really know watches and have a Rolex on their wrist because they are insecure and superficial people who also think they need the Armani suit, as you said(Disclaimer- I was once one of those people many years ago). Even though I admire it greatly, I am almost ashamed to wear my Sub at times and I may sell it at some point in favor of a more low-key Explorer I or vintage GMT Master. Thanks for another great video!

Justin Bieber? LOL. I wouldn't go that far, but it was disconcerting at times. You know, like if you put a metronome on your night stand, and set it too fast, you will have a problem falling asleep. That's what it felt like, like J was subconsciously trying to maintain the pace of narration with the music, and I was worried he was getting breathless. ;)

Nothing wrong with loving the soul of a brand or enjoying the engineering geekery of something mechanical. You can own something simply because you enjoy its beauty or the skill of those who make it. I buy things that I love and they are a complex, often odd mixture of name brands and generations. Im a Seiko man though I like several other brands including Invicta just because they are brash and loud. I drive classic Muscle cars like my Plymouth Cuda and and old trucks because I can work on them. I love old Porsches because they are well made with interesting designs. But I don't buy anything because it makes someone else like me, I don't need a costume and neither do you. So buy what ya like and be happy. Stay real J and just be happy, keep pursuing that self realization.

The 3 stages of Rolex appreciation for all watch fans (myself included):

Stage 3: Huh. They're actually pretty great.

Loved this. Here's a video idea - I think it was Jonny Casual who did a video a while back about the various Swiss watches he would buy before buying a Rolex. Not hating, just saying it wasn't his favourite brand. You have the Rolexes that you still like, but how about videos on each Rolex you sold and would NEVER buy back, listing luxury Swiss alternatives that you would consider first, now that status etc isn't a concern? People do 'affordable alternatives' videos all the time, but I don't see as many discussing similarly priced and marketed alternatives. And if there's a Rolex you sold and you don't need to ever own it OR a competing piece again, you could explain why. I think that could be really useful to viewers who have made up their minds to spend Rolex money on a watch, but might end up buying Rolex just by default, not knowing as much about other brands and options.

    • @wristwatchreflections7356

Haha, I might take my own advice and make some videos on competing brands I would buy before some of the standard Rolex pieces. If it makes you feel better, I don't think the Explorer 1 has any competitors, although that's just according to my personal taste - but there are certainly plenty of swiss pieces that I would buy before a submariner.

My maturation was a little different but I'll share; I was never super status oriented but I thought electronics were the status items to have. That was my identity and hobby when I was a younger man; particularly gaming. Now I've had pay to get rid of my obsolete electronics and none of what I collected has value.
I would have been better off buying Italian clothes and luxury wallets. I wish I had known about moore's law and items that were better commodities in holding value.
I actually got into watches because I had a friend wanting an Apple watch and I knew it was a waste of money and would devalue. I never got him into watches but I learned enough that I started collecting. I don't expect to make money on my watches but I like that they hold most of their value both to the user and on the market.

thanks for sharing your story. i went through a similar experience, 'filling a void' with expensive stuff, cars, clothes, very expensive booze and watches etc. i could drop $1000 on a pair of shoes or a nice whiskey and not think anything of it. then i guess you start to explore who you are, what does all this shit mean, and i would suggest that this material stuff is just stuff, it means nothing. so i got rid of it all, and have gone minimalist and 'anti brand' since. i still buy good clothes, but i buy stuff without branding, or i remove it myself. its a bit harder to do with watches, which i still have a passion for. i only have a few nice watches which does me fine now. regarding rolex, they are good, i concur, but i say that you pay a serious premium for them. i would suggest that you can get far better watches for the money if you dont want the look-at-me rolex attention that comes with their ownership. als, pp, jlc, vc all make incredible pieces that some of which you can get for rolex money no problem. for instance, check out the display case back on an als 1815 chrono and tell me that you dont feel something funny in your pants. proper solid gold cases (even on their 'base model' saxonia), filigree work on some of the parts, all hand finished, hand polished, its a beautiful thing. thats as good as it gets in my opinion, and achievable for the average joe if you work hard and save your money. you can get one for about USD$50k, saxiona are about USD$20k.

another thing, Rolex is owned by the Hans Wildorf foundation, a non profit charity which gives profits to worthwhile causes. so whilst some people will scoff at owning Rolex as a symbol of excesses, the company's mandate is the preservation of the brand and profit distribution to worthy causes

Bottom line is the importance of being true to yourself and not buying something with the specific intention of impressing others.
My first 'good' watch was a Tag Heuer, and a quartz. But this was before the Internet was there to educate me on horology. I bought it celebrate a career milestone, it bought me a lot of pleasure, and I wore it for many years before I owned my first mechanical piece.
I knew I wanted a nicer watch than the average cheap watch, and technically I could have done a lot better. But because I bought it for me, and it was the one that jumped out from a window full of nicer watches was all that was necessary.
Very few people are going to be 'impressed' with the watch you own, and do you really need that level of superficial friend in your life anyway? So be yourself, do you, wear what speaks to you. And above all else, make sure your microphone is recording in both channels.

Great vid! I just changed my Zenith 410 for a Quartz GS 115...no regrets. I still got the Pelagos and a vintage Omega. I never was (or will be) attracted to Rolex... it is just "so not me"... if I'd had a dollar for everytime I needed to explain that (because people simply don't believe me) I could get a Submariner by now. It's like me explaining to SJW's that I prefer Trump over Hillary. ;-)

The only Rolex I'm interested in is a vintage Rolex Datejust... Pardon me for saying this but a lot of (yes, there are exceptions) the Rolexes I see give a very insecure impression because they really show off. Bling, gold and pearls that might impress a pimp but not me.
