The ESV eliminates a PLURAL verb so that you would do what you did - interpret their replacement as SINGULAR. The ESV is wicked for this. The Plural verb "lest WE cause offense" means Jesus is including Peter in the Exemption AND the story about Kings and Sons being exempt - it means Jesus when He says "so the SONS are exempt... nevertheless so that WE..." is intentionally using plural all along to include Peter 😮
