Bagging: waiting near last place for good items (bullet bill, shock/lightning, star, golden mushroom, mushrooms) and using them to make a comeback. This lets you get to 10 coins and stay away from attack items, and you can potentially dodge the shock or do item smuggling.

Challenge idea: Midrunning. Try to stay in the middle of the pack until Lap 3, and then take 1st. Don't frontrun and don't fully bag to get the best items, fight it out in the vortex at 4th-8th place the whole time.

Actually that Daisy did not even shock dodge on Mushroom Gorge. She probably got hit while bouncing or something (probably not gliding). Then she hit the items kind of randomly and got shrooms~
Only thing stopping me from using wiggiler is lack of animation. Mostly seen when you get hit, and one of the ending animations seen on 14:36 , otherwise I’d be using the same combo shortcats using in this video because the purple liquid fits with wiggiler.
i found that the best bagging combo is funky with the teddy buggy, rollers, and cloud glider. this is because it has identical stats as the wild wiggler with ink striker except for the air and anti gravity speed being slightly higher, having a slightly higher acceleration, slightly higher ground and air handling, a slightly higher invincibility stat, and a slightly lower water and antigravity handling. overall, the difference is small, but it can change a race. also, who doesn’t like funky kong? i personally believe that the best hybrid combo that’s good at bagging and front running is kamek, the ink striker, rollers, and the cloud glider. it is a good kart combo for bagging like on cheese land, but it’s also an effective front runner. i use this because a good bagging combo can bag, but once you get to front running, it’s hard to keep up with the front running combos. with the meta yoshi combo, you can front run well, but bagging is harder when against bagging combos. with this hybrid, it feels easier to do both front running and bagging. it is slightly faster than yoshi and slightly slower than funky kong, and it’s kind of like that in every stat. it’s a perfect in between which makes it a perfect online kart combo.

Shortcat, i thought about what you said with switching up the way you play and start bagging. I started playing Pauline/King Boo/Rosalina/Link on the teddy buggy and i was bagging on every track i played. My results became a whole lot better, of course it didnt always work out but the majority of races were always top 5

Main reason I'm not bagging is that there's no concice way of learning what tracks are good, and where it's best to use what items (like Bill extensions).
As a relatively new player there's just too much info to even attempt to gather it from bits and pieces in random videos.

I picked up old Mario Kart DS using what I learned about frontrunning vs comeback gameplay, played bowser and can confidently say that even in a game overrun by snaking front run meta, you can absolutely do comebacks if you're the fastest kart in the game. Really made me appreciate though how drifting is automatic now, because it just feels more juicy to charge up a MT around a big corner rather than get one for hitting ◀▶◀▶ with the right timing. Dropping because you got the weird timing wrong isn't great.
One thing DS does get right though is the weight stat. You can absolutely SLAM dry bones if you're in a high-weight cart.
I love your videos Shortcat, watched since you started and always thought your content was great. I have a idea for you and that is that you can make shorts where you rate combos and give a explanation on what they are good at and bad at an give tips on how to improve them without just becoming teddybuggy rollers cloud glider.i have a combo being dk scooty monster tires and plane glider

just found a very great well rounded combo, you can bag and run with it. yoshi teddy leaf tires, the best stats overall imo. try it out! :)
I did Yoshi teddy, buggy, roll or cloud glider in Mario, Teddy buggy cloud glider, and they are rely the same except Mario is slightly faster, which gives him a better advantage than Yoshi

I like many combos but my favourite bagging combo has to be Pink Gold Peach on the Master Cycle Zero.
It's the most terrifying Mario Kart character of all time, on a literal Dark Horse. Probably one of the most poetic representations of bagging in general and though there are more optimal combos, the pure symbolism of the one character people are most salty about also being a Dark Horse makes it my favourite and new go-to if I ever feel like going speed items on a day.

i do understand the bagging nerf, but as medium skill player id do it to both fill my item slots and to hope for a good item in the process, so it kinda stinks at my level. I know you showed a clip of an entire lobby trying to do it some time ago so im not 100% against it just because of that lol

Video idea: the LONGEST combo in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!
I will always maintain that frontrunning is just as "degenerate" as bagging, as they both serve the exact same purpose, which is not being in the pack. Frontrunning is 90% driving skill, bagging is 90% item management. Both of those are equally important in MK and are equally difficult to master.
I swear to god, I've never seen such a good bagger like you, not even the seasoned veterans in Walmart are as half as good as yoi
