  • On the eve of NATO’s 75-year anniversary celebration in Washington DC, the co-author of NATO: What You Need To Know joined Talking Foreign Policy: an internationalist perspective on Canadian foreign policy. Yves talks about Canada's role in NATO and David Swanson details how the alliance launches wars of aggression and promotes arms sales. He also discusses NATO's role in provoking conflict in Ukraine, its increasing focus on China and the opposition to the US-led alliance.

NATO should have been disbanded at the end of the Cold War, as the Warsaw Pact was in 1991. It is the military arm advancing USA's foreign policy around the world. Any foreign threat to Canada would be seen as an existential threat to the USA. They will get involved whether we ask them or not.

Thats very true. This is how it works in Russia, China and many other nations. Private arms corporations over charge for crap equipment. U.S. 155MM round $6000 Russia $600. One tenth the cost. The people pay for this profiteering supported by corrupt politicians who are funded by the same arms manufacturers. Its all a scam. Ukraine is proof the western arms are sub standard and their multi-million dollar tanks cant even stand up to a $5000 drone. Talk about attrition. The West is losing and going broke to defend bank and corporate profits.

The first thing that would happen is that all the senior officers in the Canadian armed forces would resign. And if that didn't suffice to change the government's policy, no Canadian government could survive the political and - especially - economic pressure the US would subsequently bring to bear.

Mr. Engler, you live in Quebec. As a resident of Quebec, your primary duty is to work for the independence of Quebec, which will then be out of NATO. It is hard to take seriously anyone who calls for Canada to withdraw from NATO. It is just as obvious that Canada cannot withdraw from NATO as it is that Ukraine, Belarus or Kazakhstan cannot join it, and the fact that you do not see that obvious fact does not inspire confidence. You in Quebec should dedicate all your energy to the independence of Quebec, and we in Canada should do all we can to support those in the US who are working to remove the US from NATO. That's the only way Canada can leave NATO.

« Canada has increased its defence spending with procurements including new jet fighters and warships. The Canadian commitment to NATO includes increasing the Canadian-led battlegroup in Latvia to brigade level, effectively doubling the deployed troops to 2200. As part of Operation Reassurance, the Canadian commitment also contributes ships and submarines, fighter jets and an Air Task Force, providing logistical support.«

The war is all about Sevastopol. Its Russia's only warm water port and its an amazing base to operate subs out of. NATO wants to take it, and Russia wants to keep it. Ukraine would be in NATO tomorrow if they had possession of Sevastopol today. If they get that naval base, then they are in. No naval base, then they can pound sand.

Given that Ukraine’s agreement to give up its nuclear weapons in 1994 in exchange for security “assurances” from the US, UK and Russia (!) did nothing to prevent Russian aggression, currently the only credible guarantee is NATO membership. Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership in response to Russian aggression, and yet Russia did not complain about these two countries joining NATO. This differential treatment of Ukraine vs. Finland/Sweden legitimizes “spheres of influence,” a notion that seems appropriate for the age of empires and not for the modern era.
