@@TellanLeeis right, you should have adjusted your filters. According to hltv s1mple played 6 maps online for 2022, while zywoo played 8. Online matches in lower tiers are bound to have more variance in how well players do as some of them face vastly inferior teams in qualifiers and other such events. As a result hltv ratings will likely be inflated, or at least unsuited as a metric of performance in a high level environment.

id love to see some actual studies that show reaction time decreasing as you age... in subjects that actually train to optimize for it... most people get mentally sloppy as they age because they simply start using there brain in less challenging ways, the brain atrophies and becomes weak when demands are not being placed on it. Taking average people off the street at various ages to conduct these studies really proves nothing of worth and thats the very premise a lot of these arguments base themselves on.

I believe there is more to this, Quake 3 was my training ground, I was against either hackers and pros, not really an inbetween especially in 07-11 when i had my first pc, but i had fun regardless, lights off from 12am to 7am, then ill go to the shop, get x2 coke 1 milk and some sweets and cookies for £2 and play fallout 2 as a break.
Anyway, games familiar with the speedy snappy simplicity of quake, e.g CoD and i was the player that everyone wants on their team on blacklight retribution, they feel familiar with the quake style loop, even if not directly comparible, but CS ill be bad at, it makes no sense, i didnt learn it and i used to play 1.6 back in the day too, often shotguns only cos i might get a hit, in the last 6 years most my multiplayer FPS time has been on battlebit, just the average support class where a gg for me is something like 38/28
After binging quake 2 for the past few weeks, and still do, i go on to battlebit, standard support loadout G36c + drum i dont care i just play, it feels slowmo in comparison, i care less about the recoil, and im going nuts like ggs extremely often that has recently been somewhere in the average realms of 79/35 just often exceding 70 kills, now sure, the best players are hitting 180 and above, but there is something with my developed muscle memory from the quake days that basically "retuned" what i was tought, so i dont think you lose the ability as such, more like the early muscle developments are stronger than later ones you learn, i have no clue, but thats how it feels to me.

The only competitive scene I follow (sports, E or otherwise) is Age of Empires 2, and see people talk about age is so funny to me. I understand CS is a completely different genre, but in AoE2 you stand out by being in your 20s when the consistent top 10 has only like 2 people in their in their 20s. This is especially true since the game has gotten so old that by being young and getting into the highest levels mean you weren't even born when the game came out.
TheViper has recently stopped winning every S-tier tournament and one of his musings about his performance for the past few years has been how he can't be guaranteed to be able to play at his best on an arbitrary day. Some days you'll wake up and play your best, some days are just meh.

Being 30 and watching other 30+ year olds play, aging makes a difference. But what makes more difference is experience and motivation. A highly experienced and motivated 40 year old will still wipe the floor with 20 year olds. Reaction time is more valuable in top level CS. Where almost everyone is experienced and motivated. Every little bit of advantage and disadvantage is way more obvious there.

Vishy Anand is a former chess world champion and still 2nd place in Fide ratings for India which is the biggest country and very serious about chess at 54y, while the average age of the other players in top 10 is ~20, while he is barely active. If he was more motivated, he would still be number 1. While CS is more demanding of reaction time which is supposed to deteriorate more rapidly due to aging (not really proven, only observed but that can also be explained by loss of motivation), still 10ms of reaction time isnt fatal and with superior training, shotcalling, strategy and teamplay you will stomp everyone.
Maybe you wont get to win worlds, but you would still be safe within the first percentile if all you lack is 10ms.

I will focus on learning UE5 instead to get ready for Rocket League and PUBG moving to UE5, and Unreal is a skill I can actively make money with unlike Source2. The absolute main reason why older people get worse at gaming is NOT because of age but because the older you get the less important gaming gets. People get a wife, house, kids, job. People go on with their lifes. In actual sport like football it is more noticeable. With 35 I'm much slower than 20 year olds even tho I train more than them but the joints of my body went through a lot and are just slower and hurt.

And the people that were good enough to stick around for over 10 years (basically phenoms, the world elite) will have won so much by that time, that the pull to keep going will be less and less. Many people are not good enough to play for a very long time. Their skill plateaus, they are incompatible with gameplay changes etc. And so they will just simply not show up, they never kept playing. Another interesting comparison is to look at initial stats from very young players coming into tier 1 CS, versus older people (25+) that enter pro CS late. Here, I would love to see what the difference in stats look like if there is any. Since both of these age groups probably have the same drive to compete and win something.

30yo here, have been playing since I was 5, but competitive shooters since I was 17 and up until I was around 27 so let's say 10 years. From my experience, your relationship with gaming changes over time. You start enjoying different things in life and different kinds of games too. I still can get top of the leaderboard in online matches, but it doesn't matter as much anymore. I still take those tests for hand eye coordination (we did those out of curiosity back in 2015 and we took them yearly just to check our progress) and with enough focus I still place in the top 7% of people based on that sites data. It just doesn't get me as big of a rush anymore. Our friend group was close to tearing apart when we got on a lose streak years ago, now we just mostly chill and play games to have a good time. The life of an esports player is not as easy as it may seem. Expect frequent traveling to tournaments, most of your time spent indoors, stressing weeks-long bootcamps and as igl or coach, hours upon hours spent watching other teams' demos. There are many reasons which combined cause older players to quit. 1) A lot of them settle down and start a family with kids, which would be difficult to attend to while competing. 2) They have achieved a lot/made a ton of money and simply don't have the hunger or the need to compete anymore. 3) The game and meta changed a lot and they are either unable or unwilling to keep up. 4) They have other goals such as streaming which is way easier than esports if succesful. (or other things: Pasha's real dream was to open a gym). 5) They simply can't keep up with such a demanding lifestyle and give up. Karrigan's success as a relatively old player is due to his passion, hunger, work ethic and adaptability.

I guess at the very top the younger ones will prevail as reflexes dull over time. But then again, CS might be skewed towards reaction time more.

But yea, I tried CS for the first time against a buddy who's been playing for 15 years (he's 36 years old) and he mopped the floor with me, was somewhat demoralizing lol. Mainly because I'd never played CS, I primarily play arena FPS.

I think for the most part the reason why average people get worse at games over time is the same as any other hobby or sport, you do it less and less. Idk about you but I used to warm up play dm for a solid time and then spend hours playing, now esp with all the issues plaguing Cs and getting busy, playing 3 games in one sitting is me going crazy. Ofc I'm gonna be worse, doesn't necessarily mean it's cuz of my age.

      precisely.
Even if you got the time to play all day, the older you get, the more you enjoy a break every now and then.
Friends play a huge role on top. If you're say 15-20 you usually have your friends on call right after school, if you get older you don't really do that anymore as everyone has moved on and playing together becomes less frequent due to differing time tables and additional tasks, leading to booting up the game less often.

There's a lot of 30+ gamers out there in other games that are still super good at the games they play. There's a lot more to being good at most games than pure reaction time, especially in more strategic titles. I'm 27 now, and I'm definitely better at most games now than when I was at 17 because I've had a decade of experience to improve my skills and decision making. Someone in League of Legends even accused me of scripting the other day because I'm really good at dodging enemy attacks.

The problem isnt raw skill, its that people nearing or higher than 30 lose the passion and drive to play a videogame 14 hours a day. At some point it becomes boring playing more than a few hours a day. It is also harder to adapt to changes. Theres also health issues that can complicate things when getting older, like neck pain, headaches, etc.. making it harder to sit comfortably for 12+ hours a day. In terms of raw skill, im sure a 30 y/o can still perform as well if not better than youngins, but sustaining that skill and being consistent is much harder.

I think in short the "30+ year olds" of yesteryear (2000s thru 2020) only "fall off" because the competitive scene wasn't as intense during their active years, if that makes sense. A 30 year old in 2030, IMO, won't have the skill ceiling issue or the skill dropoff issue that is observable in some boomers nowadays lol

I don't play as much because I simply don't have the time these days to play as much as I did 10 years ago. I think there is also another effect at play here. Only the good players tend to stay until “old age”, skewing the skills for these players. I would argue the older players represent the highest skill levels, whereas the younger her players encompass a much wider skill level. The “average” players slowly fade away as they age and will not be able to extend contracts.

I can't play CS 1.6 like I did in high-school for 20 hour gaming sessions on the weekend. I gotta do other things. i think theres so many other factors to this then "reaction time slow". most of it probably has to do with people getting actual lives and responsibilities as they get older so they dont really have the time to mindlessly grind a ranked ladder. could also have to do with the financial opportunity cost that comes with being a pro player. not sure how much they make vs a traditional job but i would assume the traditional job is probably much more profitable unless you're the best of the best in esports

I don't think your analysis makes much sense. You compare the level of competition of players of different ages in an environment that already filters out any player of lower skill. In that regard, which you even mentioned, you should look at the overall number of players in each age group. It's like analysing the rank of global elites, but then saying you can't do much analysis because a certain age group isn't of that rank. Probably because that age group is either of lower rank, which then makes the overall number of players of certain ages in certain ranks the actual number you should look at, or because the game itself is being played less by people of certain age groups, which then also kind of portrays an answer to your question.
If you start out by looking at the age of random players and then calculate the average hltv rating of each age group, I think your graph would look more correct, eventhough to get an active hltv rating you would need to already be on a certain minimum skill level, which then just circles back to looking at the amount of players of each age group to determine at what age one is most competitive.

  • @LambdaTF2
    @LambdaTF2 5 месяцев назад +3

The best way to analyse how age effects gameplay would be to track a player performance over their lifetime and then find the average for all competitive players. You could then see what age each player was best at and when the average "peak" of peoples performance is. I think a reason this competitive data is hard to draw conclusions from is from is that if a player is too young/old to play at a competitive level, they get filtered out of the data. Trying to find the historical data for a large collection of people might be really difficult to do. However maybe someone could try get in contact with hltv or something because I think the data would be really interesting.

    • @Rendrom1by1
      @Rendrom1by1 5 месяцев назад

But over time, the average level of players increases, hence the longer you play, the more skillful your opponents are and the harder it is for you to maintain the same stats as before. In other words, your performance will degrade not because of your age, but because younger players have grown up in a more competitive environment and have access to the knowledge and skills you "invented". The result is again not a measurement of the rate of skill decline with age, but a measurement of the difference in level of play between players of different generations.

Karrigan and rain are still winning championships, I never liked the low key eugenic thought process of "you're too slow and undesirable".

I do think we will likely see an increase in the amount of players who are over 30 staying in the professional scene moving forward, compared to the years prior. Particularly because of how much larger gaming is as a whole, and how much more it can financially support you compared to many (not all) games in the past.
Even if there is a slight dip at this age it is most certainly not due to age itself, rather a plethora of other factors (motivation, lack of time/practice, etc). However, I do think there will be a trend of these players going for longer as time goes forward.
    Great video as always!

People also stop being good at videogames out of spite. For example, for ten years in a row i was gaslit by From Software fanboys that I will never be "good" at videogames until I "beat" dark souls and i should just quit gaming and have a "calmer" hobby like reading or gardening instead. I decided to play DS2 after ten years, and was disgusted by how easy it was and how dying literally doesn't punish you. I refunded it, then I decided to take one of these From Software fanboys and make them play Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, a roguelike that was marketed for literal actual children. He ragequit after fainting 8 times against drowzee and destroyed his controller. Luckily I was using melon so he did not destroy a DS.
This made me realize that being "good" at videogames literally doesn't matter because even if you are the best player in the ENTIRE planet, people will STILL find excuses to say that you're not and constantly find ways to make their dick look bigger than yours. So why bother being good? Block everyone, play only and exclusively the games you LOVE, let them rage at each other. What's the point of having friends if they all eventually become violent towards you because you didn't accept Hidetaka Miyazaki as your lord and savior?

For me personally with age I just don't try hard as much at winning. I try to win but it's more casual in it's approach. I don't go through extreme lengths as I did over 10 years ago. You know where you do that thing where you look up stats for each gun or vehicle in a game or best loadouts? Today I don't use the "meta". I just use whatever I feel like. When you are young you always feel like you should prove something. It goes away with age, not because of reflexes slowing down but just life experience.

This way of doing data is wrong, We should just analyze individual players fall off period.
It's like doing average speed of a car which will probably be closer to the speed limit but it won't account for lunatics and turtle drivers

CS is largely reliant on reflexes, but it's also largely reliant on game sense. Reaction times do start to drop off around 24 or 25, this has been studied before. However, a player with good game sense can continue to perform well simply by outsmarting their opponents. I am 27. I have noticed my reactions dropping a bit. I perform much worse, but this is because all I ever had was reactions, and I have always been a shit player when it comes to game sense. I gave up on the game shortly after CS2 came mostly due to the other problems that came with CS2, but also because I can no longer tell if someone is cheating, or if my reactions have fallen to a point where I am simply just shit at the game.

Ok so here's some hot takes from me, someone who turned 28 near the end of last year and has been PC gaming specifically playing FPS games since I was 5 years old or less. I played CS:S for the record lol
Ok so.. For about 5 solid years between 2017 and 2022 I played a CS knockoff called Black Squad and I became one of the best players in the whole game. I quit because they broke the AK and the cheaters became out of control.
I took a hiatus for like 2 years and played Fortnite instead, for fun, not to be amazing. I got good at that, and then recently I returned to CS, in CS:2. Now I'm already being accused regularly of WH, I see my KD go up as I learn the maps, and I would say I am as good as I've ever been.
I don't see myself getting worse, at all, I see myself consistently getting better. And I use a weighted mouse, I haven't changed my mouse (though I've replaced it) since 2017 or so. (Corsair M65 RGB Pro)
What I think is gamers back when I was a kid experienced as they got older was that there simply wasn't the ubiquity of people going crazy on comp FPS with ezpz matchmaking that constantly happened on a whim. I think that at a certain point it was "it's too inconvenient to get a match and I have better things to do." = skill ceiling
The significant piece of data for me is that I have never stopped playing, even if it's casual, I feel like people "my age" stop playing because it becomes something extra.
Over the years the competitive FPS games I've played consistently were:
Halo (all of the games until about 2012), CS:S, CS:GO, Blacklight: Retribution (reached endgame had every cosmetic that existed lol, if you know you know,), Black Squad, and CS:2.

Also something I would note about my data is that I really really really don't give a single fuck about the usual things people care about. I don't want kids, I don't care for a nice big house although I did have one, I have interests and I love my interests.
Gaming is an escape for me from the shit I've gone through and I still want to "be the best," I will never not want to "be the best" and it's a problem for me as it bleeds into every aspect of my life. I was definitely an early prototype of modern zoomers as I always was on my PC as a kid versus spending time outside with other kids doing normal kid stuff, if you could replace smart phones with a PC and turn the clocks back 15 years, you have whatever I was lol

If you want to explore which stats correlate with high player rankings as you mentioned in the video, you should look into principle component analysis. When you have many variables and many samples, it's a good way to see which variables correlate with each other (e.g. player ranking and hsp) and which ones don't. It's a bit of a rabbit hole, but it's very doable without having to get into the world of AI.
