Only budgies suck seed!!!!! Interesting video and something that I have had constant problems with down the years, as I have a tendency to come back on the inside and cast the club over the top thus swinging across the line (instead of the in to out that I'm trying to achieve) resulting in a smear to the right and, inevitably, into trouble!!! It's no wonder golf is such a frustrating game at times!!! The really important thing that I've found is aim. If that is off, then you can swing as well as you possibly can, and still be in trouble. It's not sufficient just to aim at the fairway, you have to be as precise as you can be (as you demonstrated with aiming for "the end of the path") in order for everything else to click into place. Yet another case of "think big, aim small!".
I'm having problems at the moment. Video is showing my shoulders are open and I'm not turning away from the ball properly. The problem is I'm quite stiff at the moment. The strange thing is when I get my shouders correct I feel closed so must have been doing the open shoulders for some time. It's something I need to work on. The great thing is when I get the set up correct again I know I will start striping the ball. I only hit 5 fairways yesterday but I still shot my handicap. Golf is weird! Set up is everything.
Thanks. If it makes people think a bit that's good. I looked at myself this weekend and I've gone open again and I think the ball has gone forward a bit. We spend our golfing lives trying to stay out of bad habits.
@@thehairygolfer haha same here. I only start noticing it when I start fading or slicing the ball. It usually happens at the beginning of my round but sometimes it will creep in mid round.
Mine is little ropey at the moment, it's time for a lesson so I can have my Pro watch me and correct me. Even with video it's hard to correct yourself. If you are having problems just get a mate to record you on the phone. Set up and drop the club you are holding across your toes then step back. Just getting the body aiming the right way for your shapre can work wonders.
Calling out the northern mate, I see :D I have a very strong left hand grip (all knuckles visible), but when I get in the slice or double-cross mode with the driver, I try to cue more feel of pushing upwards with the right hand in the follow-through, almost as if you push the club upwards with your palm. This feeling can't really be achieved while coming outside-in or downwards into the ball. All cues are individual, though. Hard to know how other people feel or visualize their swing.
The northern mate?????? What the guy who has many celebrity golf lessons, never practices and then goes back to playing shite? Grip is a hard one to change because your timing, aim, release and swing path are all related to it. You mess with one of those and you have to change everything. I like Pros who see what you have and improve upon it, make it more reliable, than those who step in and try to change everything. My only advice is be aware of anyone who wants to change what finds the fairway for you.
@@thehairygolfer I hear you. I started out with a strong grip as a small boy and had several coaches try to change it, but I always went back. Back in those days ~20y ago a lot of coaching was more rigid towards some platonic ideal swing (at least in my experience); this is how you should grip, this is how you should finish, etc. Video on the computer was kind of a new tool and one coach was extremely keen on molding my finish to be like David Duval's, for whatever reason. These days I think it's a bit better on that front, at least from what I hear on RUclips. We all have different bodies. If Matthew Wolff can be world-class, then there is a lot of room for diversity. Of course, there are limits to how non-standard you can swing or grip, but as long as it looks good at impact, a lot of different things can work well.
@@niandralades2 I started with the beginners slice. A pro changed that to a draw. 5 years later I was a snap hook. Had some lessons and a change of equipment. My grip was super strong and the shafts were too soft for me. Plus I'd now put on golf muscle. These days I'm so stiff I can't drive through the shot like I used to so I look a bit awkward waiting for the golf club rather than driving with my hips. You are right, it's all about impact. What is the swingpath and where is the clubface pointing. Get those right and you hit target even if you end up taking one more club than you would need if your body worked properly. What I enjoy are those warm days when my body works well and I hit it further. Yesterday on our 11th par 3 I hit 7 iron. On holiday in Thailand I was hitting 8 for that distance. You see a lot of old boys playing good golf out there and wish I could retire there. It made me laugh you knew instantly who I was referring to with the bad set up!
very much things to think about there, thank you, I do get the feeling it's an area I need to improve in. Have played Lillybrook, great course and not too far from me, ( Stratford Upon Avon ), but for quirkiness, it's got to be Cleeve Hill, or Painswick :)
Hi Simon, my set up is a little poor at the moment. The joy of video is I can see what I am doing. The difficult bit is fixing it as you need someone to watch you. I need to get a lesson. Stratford is a nice course, the one I know is. Painswick is an interesting course but I've done it twice so wont be going back in the near future. Cleeve Hill is not on my list of places to visit.
@@SimonParkes Simon, it's not the walking at Cleeve Hill that bothers me. It's the ball blowing backwards at me in the wind! They have put the price up quite dramatically since it got saved and quite frankly it's now over priced. Now Autumn is here getting a round in is becoming harder. Getting leave is an issue too. Where would you want to play and when?
@@SimonParkes Is it £40 now? That's expensive for a course with little grass on the fairway and covered in sheep shit. That's why I have playing hilltop courses in Wales! One time we played there in April. It started to snow on the 13th and we took the long walk back, it was nearly a foot deep when we got to the cars.
Truth be told. Since i made this I've got into a bit of a mess. I was hitting it badly on the video I'm about to edit and I'm aiming so far left all I could do is laugh. How do we get into these bad habits?
@@MilesMartinGolf I think sometimes the pressure of setting the camera up and then rushing so you don't hold up the guys behind are our downfall. My bad round was trying to play 18 before dark after work. I was moving much quicker than a 57 year old smoker should be moving! I've got that same pattern as you. Slice then pull. Same swing - different club face. It's horrible not knowing which one you are going to do.
Pre shot routine soooh important indeed. For me it's not a technical add as such but a thing to let me concentrate on what is important fo me. (= as little technical thoughts as possible) 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Technical thoughts can be a killer. I only think of one 'reminder' thought. That is usually low and slow or wide. If the ball is below my feet with an iron I have a thought for that too. But I keep it very simple.
This video was inspired by my son who is having problems. I'm also having problems! My ball position has got too far forward recently. Why do we always fall into bad habits?
So true Simon. I have developed a good pre-shot routine (I think?) Excellent video and informative 👍 I sometime think I play too slow 🐌 due to pre-shot routine for every shot from tee to green. But at the end of the round my time has been fine, but this still clouds my head during the round. Any thoughts?
Since i made this I've lost my aim. I think because I'm rushing with the camera to keep ahead of the game behind. I take my time around the greens but walk quickly. I make sure I get to my ball and am ready to play asap. If you have guilt about it but are still playing on time and not holding people up then somehow you have to try and forget it. I have that same twinge of guilt taking my time on the green. I jusy try and focus on hitting a good shot, it's impossible to do if you are thinking of a group on the tee behind you. Don't know what else to say. Put your score top of the list of priorities.
Your pre-shot routine is similar to mine. I just don't have problems with my neck more back problems!!🏌♀😀 The 18th hole is awesome!! I love elevated tee boxes!!
