Fabric came in 22" widths back then. When Worth saw the first cage (sprung steel) in hoops, one fitting inside of each other when flat on floor, he commanded it be made in 200" round, the largest of its time. Thus requiring 9 panels of fabric. Because Worth still worked under M&G, he was only allowed to order (4) hoops. Later in life when Worth felt comfortable with is position in fashion and his wealth he had his favorite pattern EYES & EARS woven. From a design of a garment in a museum he frequented. The wearer, was stating, "he saw and heard" everything. Worth made a lose frock coat for himself of said fabric.
My husband's great aunt had a Worth wedding dress - ecru lace over silk - and a pale green going away dress, also from House of Worth, probably dating to the 1890s. The family donated the dresses to a local museum in the 1990s and they were still in excellent condition - quite wearable. So, not only exquisitely made, but made to last!
you all probably dont care at all but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
Omg I am so jealous! I've been trying to get my hands on 'Worth - a Century of Fashion' by JP Worth for at least half a decade! Love the video btw :D Am I the only one thinking there should be a feature length documentary about Worth and his house?
Goldkehlchen20 I was thinking exactly the same thing when I was researching and writing this episode! Why hasn’t there been a movie about one of the greatest fashion houses of all time! My husband got me a copy of A Century of Fashion for Christmas 2019!! I am very lucky... it’s an amazing piece of literature! I also managed to find an acid free, conversation grade storage box to store it in which is pretty much the exact size!!
Fabulous video and illustrations. I have looked at Worth sketches in the V&A library. In the 1990s I used to make original artist dolls (19" in resin) My first series was called Fashion Plate Ladies 1875-1882 and they had idealised features and a cuirasse shaped corsetted body. Then I invented one of a kind dresses for them. I sold some and kept some - good fun while it lasted!
What a great piece -- especially the bit about Winterhalter!! I also see where Irene Sharaff based her designs for Mrs. Anna in THE KING AND I. Good job.
I've just bought myself two books called The House of Worth for the gorgeous illustrations. So inspiring! Did you hear about the Worth Ball that was postponed last year? Costubers have been making copies of various Worth Gowns to wear!
I absolutely love Worth gowns!! I have a few dresses inspired by his works especially a Worth inspired version of Elsa’s Spirit Dress from Frozen 2 and a replica of a green and cream Russian court dress circa 1888.
Worth is the reason I love the fashions of the Victorian period. The details of the dresses have a certain softness and intricacy which contrasts the stiffness of the structure of the garments which make them impeccable since its a perfect balance of hard and soft.
I first learned about Worth in Fashion school and I took a very deep dive into all things Worth. One of austrias most famous dresses is the white star dress from Empress Sisi which you showed. The funny thing about the dress is, that the Empress saw Virginia Oldoini wearing a star dress and she wanted one too. She also copied the stars in her hair which are now her trademark. Nobody knows what happened to the original dress. In fact there are several photographs of the dress and not one does look alike. It's even said, that the dress of the painting never existed and that it was just painted. I always wonder if there are still old order books or fashion drawings of the dresses and if they know how the dress really looked like...
I love that shirt too! It’s vintage Christian Dior Monsieur! Glad you enjoyed! Please subscribe and check out my other videos! If you liked Fashion &… Worth, I can recommend Fashion &… Winterhalter
It's crazy the gap between the poor and wealthy. Of course it's still there, but considering the housing & working conditions for the "lower classes" it's amazing how some could flaunt such wealth! (Gorgeous gowns though!)
CFWorth had an elder brother, William III, his sisters Harriett and Sarah (if the latter ever was born) and baby Charles who died as a baby. Therefore, CFW was named Charles Frederick, so he wouldn't be confused with his late baby brother.
I’m currently reading my husband, Hunter’s young rich American women who are bread and sold by their mothers into the British aristocracy and peerage that was the first time I read his name
Striking I agree but not really evoking the rich history of the brand. There were so many bespoke textile designs original to the house of worth that could have been used. It’s a shame it didn’t take off though.
i mean...no wonder it was unsuccessful...wtf even were those designs??? when you think worth you think pretty dresses, maybe we are a bit stuck in the titanic era, which already was his son, but like...pretty dresses you wished you could wear...that last launch being "Worth" is basically a monstrosity.

Thank you for sharing! They both sound like gorgeous pieces of fashion and family history!
Would you mind sharing what museum now has the family Treasure?
@@bettybrockhoff1803 Big Timbers Museum in Lamar, Colorado.
OMG, can someone make a pattern with those!? Its impossible to get the design right when you remake one without it.

The picture you show as Jean Philippe Worth is wrong. Actually, it's his elder borther Gaston Worth, my great great granfather.

what's the name of the music in the background?
Sad ending to such a profound industry.

What designer's are making dresses now that anyone will sigh over in 100 years?
Indeed!
That's too bad, those 2010 designs were quite striking to me.
Striking I agree but not really evoking the rich history of the brand. There were so many bespoke textile designs original to the house of worth that could have been used. It’s a shame it didn’t take off though.

I have to agree they missed the mark with the brand revival whey was such a shame, especially with a house with so much history!
