I don't think what they used on Royal Pains was an oscillating saw. The sparks were flying in only one direction, meaning a rotating blade was used, like an industrial "roto-zip" tool.
Maybe they were using a bone saw and just said it was a cast saw because someone was told to get a "medical saw", and some do look similar. Some even have rotating blades.
When i broke my arm and they cut the cast off, the nurse showed me on her palm that it can't cut my skin so i don't think it would be able to cut much.
That’s a logical issue. The skin is flexible and moves with the blade, not being torn or ripped. As you can see in the video, it does more damage to a pipe then to skin, even while skin is more softer. But that last part is the key. It only cuts something which is harder on the outside. Like the Apple, which is very thin but harder on the outside.
When i broke my arm they put it in a synthetic (plastic) cast...yeah bad idea...when the time came to cut it of the metal wheel got so hot that is burned and cut my skin. still got marks from it!
When I was young I broke my arm on a swing set, when I went to the dr. to get my cast removed she told me it cant cut me. Part way through removing the cast I said it felt like it was cutting my arm she said it just felt that way cause it was hot from friction and that I was okay... lo and behold once the cast was off I had about an inch and a half long gash in my arm.
I had one leave slight cuts on me. It wouldn't cut me when I put it directly on my skin but when it was cutting the cast I don't know if it was getting pinched or hot or something but it hurt & once the cast was off we could see it had left a red dotted like. Not enough to draw blood but almost. The dots were red raw skin, kinda like when you get a bad scratch.
@@adambeard4427 It didn't cut my hand when the doctor showed me it wouldn't cut me but it did when removing the cast. Was that the same for you? Were you able to figure out why it cut you?
Even the heavy duty “construction” version of this tool with blades specifically designed for cutting metal don’t work very well against steel piping like that.
While great for some jobs, i can't imagine one of them cutting anything more than a nail or a small bolt. As a side note, if you ever burn up (or just wear out) a saw blade, just sharpen that edge into a knife blade. Works amazingly well on rubber and soft plastics, but you have to keep pulling the cut apart. So just bend whatever you're cutting and cut on the 'outside' of said bend.
I went to an autopsy during nursing school. I learned a bone saw only works on bone. The lady tried to scare us by putting it on her hand. Pretty interesting.
when i was having my cast removed one time this thing did actually cut my arm no one believed me until the whole cast was off and i was bleeding onto the floor

A doctor once told me that the tools surgeons use for surgery look exactly like the hammers, drills and saws you can buy at Home Depot. The biggest difference is the brand name and price tag.
For everyone out there that doesn't know it is nothing more than a multi-tool. The Harder it is and the less it can move the easier it will cut that is why it can't cut thou skin it is too soft and moves too much.
You got that backwards actually. You multi tool oscillator is a modified and improved version of a cast saw. The cast saw came out in the mid 1940s, while the first variation "Master Tool" (The Fein Multimaster RS) came out over 40 years later in the late 1980s. The speed of a cast saw is optimized for cutting plaster and fiberglass and they only come with blades optimized for cutting those materials. Multi Tools/Master Tools/Oscillating Saws have variable speed motors so that they can be dialed in to the proper speed range for the blade used and materiel being cut.
I would like to see how this performs against an oscillating tool. I would like to know what the differences are between them since they do a similar thing.
When I was younger I had a cast on and was freaked out at the thought of a saw near my cast so the doctor showed me it actually can't cut you. The let me touch the blade and touched themselves with it while it was on to prove it is harmless
The reason you'd use a carbide blade on a cast saw isn't because the cast is too hard. It's so that the blade can last longer before needing to be changed out.
My cousin hand will prove to you that the older cast saws will cut through skin and bone he was eight or nine and the doctor cut so bad in his hand he had ten staples
Obviously less effective than a proper tool, but made me wonder about plaster/drywall. Like if you for some reason had this but not the proper type of tool, could you use that for house work
Definitely a cheap oscillating tool. I use a construction Oscillating saw almost every day and it is one of the most versatile tools that would no doubt cut skin and a mental bar!

So um... I don't know if I had a very overly aggressive & careless nurse (which I'm 99% sure is at least part of it) or if hospital-grade cast saws are significantly different than this one, but I can attest that they can indeed hurt you plenty. I had a full-arm cast removed 2yrs ago & still have a scar on my forearm from the saw that the nurse was using cutting through the cast & underlying bandages to my skin underneath. I will say that I think the initial "trauma" that caused the scar was more of a burn caused by the heat of the saw as it swelled up like a welt almost immediately, but it's still in a nick sort of shape like a cut would cause. I don't want to cause any fearmongering or anything, but I was a little uncomfortable with how harmless Nate made the saw seem. It didn't cause a big injury for me, but it still hurt plenty & it was infuriating that even the surgeon I saw minutes after having the cast removed wouldn't even acknowledge the fact that one of her staff had just burned me with the saw/said it couldn't possibly cause any harm when there's no way I could've given myself that sort of fresh marking moments after having that portion of my arm exposed & accessible for the first time in 2months.
