I'm hoping they'll still be available after my bank completes the switch to the new company! Wouldn't you know, it's a royal mess and I won't be able to make transactions using a debit card until the switch it completed. Inconvenient, to say the least!

@@kimfleury That new bank/debit card is a hassle. I'm supposed to enter ssn on my phone to access online banking; that bank's website says they'll never ask for ssn. (Not typing/telling ssn so will prob have to go to the bank.) Best luck to everyone "transitioning" to a surprise new bank. 🤔

Jim, I'm sure you heard it before, but I love the fact that your horses have nice tails to swat flys with.
Glad you didn't edit that out of the video when Lady got scared . Now those of us that are not around horses all of the time got to see how fast things can change .
You're right! I am no expert but a friend of mine used to drive her mini horses all the time. She said her first rule was always, always have an exit strategy in case they do spook and take off.
I believe the linkage was not at the same on each horse.

I was always impressed by the strength a horse would display when concerned about an issue. Particularly sheep. Driving these two beauties via a vlog is such a treat.
You handled that spook with Lady so calmly, it shows you know your horses and they know and trust you. It’s a beautiful relationship that takes lots of work, patience, persistence, love, and time. My horse flips out over goats if she can hear them but not see them. I guess she doesn’t like the sound they make 🤷♀️ And she is also terrified of mammoth mules. I think its the long ears lol.
Lady's fear was a surprise but Jim handled it like the professional that he is. Thanks for sharing.
Learned to hitch up a team at age 10, to either the manure spreader, or to a hay wagon, and drive them. Nice team of Belgians, owned and used by the farmer who rented our farm to us. He used a tractor also, but preferred his team on hilly hay fields. They don't tip over like a tractor does.
Jim, very impressed how accurate you are at backing the horses when connecting the pin for the manure spreader.
I have a trailer for hauling ATVs and I need my backup camera to get it that good.
Now, you don’t need a backup camera but you have to use verbal commands instead of having a steering wheel, brakes and an accelerator. That’s really impressive.
Also, when you were backing up to connect to the round bale you are definitely in a tricky spot if the horses come back a bit hard or too far. You sure could get crushed with your own rig. You must have great confidence in your horses and your ability to get them to stop on a dime.
I love hearing the horses clip clop down the road. Our road was hard dirt though and it sounded a bit different,

I think it was nice for Jim to take "His Honey," out for a ride on the Honey wagon!. such a nice guy!. thoughtful. And I guess we could say that Lady was a little "Sheepish" about Sheep!. It was an uneven evener :) because bill didnt step back enough and you had to make up the difference pushing on the wiffel tree with your knee!
We had horses for a long time, my old boy would jump in the back of a truck like a dog...in and out no ramp and still did when he was blind....communication was key and very effective.
He died at 35 years old. We grew up together.

I always wore a wide brimmed hat tilted back, when spreading manure. The slinger or beater on our spreader had a tendancy wing a sticky clod or two forward. Before the hat I had been hit in the back of the head with odorous clumps. That always made my dad laugh.

Sheep! Either offer to feed them for a few days at your place, or ask to put Lady and Bill in with them. She needs to live with them for a little while. Maybe she's really never seen sheep. And they smell funny.
Worst shy I ever had was a camel, last thing one might expect to see just on the edge of Canberra, it was way away but the smell blew off it. They literally bolted, pack horse beside me, across a road and lucky no car, then pulled up blowing raspberries.

I was shocked when the video notification came over my phone. With all that Lady has done and been around I couldn't believe her fear BUT if she has never seen/smelled sheep, it makes sense.

I need to be schooled on the terminology, tugs, eveners, trace lines, etc. I know what the collar is. So maybe Jim can do a video if he hasn't already explaining the parts of the harness.

8:15 - the evener is pulling more on the right side meaning his rear chains could have been one link longer ;) which would even out the weight each horse is pulling.

For anyone curious, that’s silage, essentially ya wrap ya hay bale and let it ferment over time it goes a black colour sheep and cows love it

WOW! I can't believe it! I had a spreader the same year and model as this one , for my small horse farm. I had it rigged up to pull it with my yard tractor. SWEET.🐴🐴

You have a beautiful farm! Very interesting video. Lady didn't freak out that bad. My riding horses have spooked worse and they hardly ever did. I hope you are feeling better💙
the farm I grew up on was a stop over point on the geese's way north every spring in April just outside of Sault Ste Marie, Canada. They would rest overnight in our fields (eating up all the new shoots of the coming pasture or hay crop but Dad refused to scare them off and was adamant that they were here long before we were and it was just a cost of business. around 10 am, they would begin to get excited and by 10:30 they were streaming skyward, circling and getting sorted out into their skeins of vee shaped streamers before heading out to the waters of Lake George or Huron. They would start trickling in around 5pm. they usually stayed for around 2 weeks, waiting for the northern lakes to clear of ice before heading on towards the Artic Circle. in the fall, on their way back, our farm was posted as no hunting and they would stop in again, though they didn't stay as long. When I married and left the farm I fell into a severe depression a few years later, that continued to worsen with each passing year. a chance spring visit to a park with a lot of geese coming in solve the reason for my depression. All my life, the geese had herald the arrival of spring and without them, spring never came. so thereafter, I'd take some lettuce scrapes and head off to a local lake and welcome the geese back. My heart still soars to see the vees overhead.

Our good old team at home would spook from the strangest things, a mineral feeder they had walked by a hundred times one day just scared the heck out of them

The steers look delicious. When the cattle in our area lie down in the field on a cloudy day, as yours are on this day, it usually indicates rain will come soon. Just an old wives tale that is more true than not. Odd how animals can sense weather changes.

Picked up a few more links on Jim's left heel chain than on the right, looks to me.
I knew a farm family that sadly had their Dad get caught up in a manure spreader . He was by himself and spent hours stuck in that thing he had to use his pocket knife to cut off one of his arms. He ended up with no arms and his legs were badly messed up as well so it was a wheel chair for him after that. The spreader was not one pulled by horses but instead a tractor . I don't know it he tried fixing it while it was going or what . Still that was a terrible thing for anyone to have happen.

I would have to think that a nylon strap would be much lighter, and easier to work with when pulling or dragging something, than those heavy chains are. 👍🐎🇺🇸
Weight of those chains is inconsequential to those horses.
Worse would be to use something of weaker strength and face a catastrophe should they come loose or fail.

I wasn't thinking about the horses, I was thinking about him and his wife, and they make nylon straps that are stronger than chains, just look at all the flatbed trailers going down the road, and see how many are using straps, and how many are using chains.
The price might make the difference. Also the friction wear in the many applications Jim puts the chins to.
Bill right side is longer then left by the evener.
Those wooly white things might be predators. Lady is just being the "mom" protecting her family members from danger. Love her! :) lol

Most people dont realize it......but horses can also eat balage hay. I know of a number of people in my area......that buy it from me and feed it to their horse.
