Design Indaba Emerging Creative: Nikiwe Dlova on her hair art

In this interview we chat to #DI Emerging Creative Nikiwe Dlova.
Nikiwe is a Hair Artist from Diepkloof, Soweto. She studied Clothing Management at the University of Johannesburg, and her love of fashion led her to explore another element of her identity, which is hair.
She started her brand, ownURcrown in 2018 to explore art and identity in hairstyling. She works with contemporary headpieces, fashion, and hair tapestry. The latter showcases how hair extensions can be used as a textile and fibre artform by weaving and sewing braided hair extensions by hand in order to create a visual story.
Nikiwe is interested in how people express themselves through their hair, not only limited to how they style it, but also to how they interact with hair in their environment and clothing. Combining history, design and culture helps Nikiwe to tell her story of how versatile and limitless hair can be.
