I was selected to coach disabled athletes, in hockey. I did it for many years. I had to turn down a thousand thank yous to protect myself from becoming a bowl of jello, and getting a big head. The highs, in these sports, are higher than "standard" sports, but, the lows are also way lower. The range of emotions is like a roller coaster, and Id challenge anyone to try it. It is not easy, and not for the faint of heart. Its coaching x100.

I am a woman and after I finished university and started working lots of hours to get those loans paid off I gave up hockey for a couple years because I didn't have time to commit to playing on a team. I ended up getting invited to play in an 'old timers' men's league which was for over 40 which some of the guys I worked with played on. This was basically a pick up league so no tournaments and no big commitments to show up. I had a great time playing, especially with the fellas who were retirement age. They were always encouraging, in good spirits and there to have some fun, have some fellowship and get some exercise. It wasn't the most exciting hockey I have played over the years, but it was some of the most fun I have ever had playing hockey.

There is nothing better than a group of men bringing this young man into their circle. So many don't understand that being included is so vital. We had to find a life after post secondary school. Our daughter is an Equestrian at a therapeutic horseback riding facility. Her whole world opened up just like this toung man. So elatrd for him. Loneliness is so depressing for our special needs community.
Having a “team”, is EVERYTHING in life, more so when your mentally challenged. Glad to see these guys coming together to help each other, you know, like a COMMUNITY. These are the Americans we fight for. Semper fi earthlings

I'm autistic and I went to mainstream school growing up, which was my life. When I left school I had no plans and no idea how to move forward in life. I pretty much thought my life was over at 18. I got very depressed, which was awful, but that opened up the option of starting at a mental health charity, where I've been able to make good friends, which I never thought I could do. When you go from being a disabled child to being a disabled adult, it can take a while to find a new support structure, but with time, you'll find it.

But as a 53 year old goalie rapidly approaching 54 I appreciate and understand how much of a community it is. 3 different groups have taken me under their wing, one of those skating on Christmas Eve day has a 72 year old Commish running it for us and playing also. The other group banded together to raise money for a member who couldn't afford to go see his son play on the US National Deaf/Hearing impaired under 20 group team for the Olympics so he was staying home while his wife would travel. Enough t-shirts were sold to ensure he'd be able to watch and celebrate with his son in Italy a few years ago. His son was a fine young man who has skated with us a number of times. These stories remind me what our purpose is...bring and keep people in the fold. Go Mud Ducks!! Quack Quack

At it’s worst, a violent, hard hitting game, at it’s best, the hockey community has hearts of gold. We learned this after the Humboldt Broncos tragedy.
I’m so glad they met each other but makes me so sad Matt didn’t have an opportunity center to transition into after high school. My mother worked with mentally and physically disabled adults like him at one. It gave them jobs, structure, fun, friends and family. She has since retired but gave her some of the most amazing memories to work with them ❤
I have never played a second of hockey in my life but I absolutely LOVE the sport. I've been to more hockey games than I can count and it's just an amazing community.

This was a precious story with a happy Iending. It's kind of sad that young people OR older ones can feel that age is a bridge that can not be crossed. Some of my best friends in life we're 20 or 30 years older than I was. Friendship and love can be shared no matter our Age. Sadly, now that I am older, these dear friends are gone, but they live in my heart. I am so grateful we met.
Beautiful story and a tremendous group of individuals. This is the true meaning of life. People caring for each other and enjoying the short time we have here on earth.
