As the reactors are musicians and assessing them as a BAND rather than an IDOL GROUP, it fits in exactly with how day6 have always said that they want people to recognise them: as a hardworking band. I am SO GLAD I found this channel! Finally reactors who talk about the music. You guys are gems. Since I'm Day6 trash and there's nobody else for me to talk to about their music, this is the only outlet for me to spazz. LETTING GO: I remember being surprised when I heard the first chorus. At 0:42, I expected it to change chords but it stayed at 6 minor and it was so cool how they dragged out that melancholy like that. Subsequently, all the choruses were amazing. When they added a repeated chorus, that chord got changed to a 5 minor (I think). And yeah, the last chorus when Sungjin sang that 2 notes at a higher pitch? So good. Yes Yunyi, all the choruses are different! I love how they differentiate the 1st and 2nd parts of the chorus by the drumbeats. my favorite is the 3rd chorus after the rap when the drums seemed to going towards a climax but suddenly, all instruments were taken away. OMG. SO. GOOD. (hi 5 Umu!) I am also impressed by how they fit a rap so well into this song, when you least expected it. YoungK's 'mmmmm' at 2:26 is life... *cries* I WAIT: The beginning of each phrase, or the accent, or rather, when the chords change? Anyway, they start on the 4& beat of the bar. I don't know the right term, but that's the 8th quaver? (please forgive my very poor music theory) And that is SO AWESOME. totally changed the dynamic of the song. Even the intro starts at that last quaver. So I used to wonder how they do this live because without a downbeat, it's really hard to get the beat. At least for me. I got my answer when I watched their live. Dowoon actually tap out 1, 2, 3, 4 right before the intro starts. Cool. Jae's singing at the intro really really shook me. And I was pleasantly surprised by his 'oh no'. Cos I was expecting the melody to go down (something like F#- D lowB) but it went up instead! (lowB D E A F#) Plus the drumbeat accentuating it. So refreshing. Like some of the reactors, I just have to figure out chords! the pre-chorus got me. But after hearing Kevin play on the piano, I finally caught the chords. THANK YOU KEVIN! (Kevin and Yunyi are my favorites!) Yeah, the prechorus bassline is lit! And YoungK sings while playing that live. He is awesome. Also, did anyone notice how he sucks in a breath at 1:34? With that pained expression on his face? omg, that killed me. It was so emotional. During the bridge, Jae and Dowoon were playing on the '&'s of the beat. Like 1 &, 2 & etc. What do you call that? Syncopation? Upbeat? Offbeat? Sigh... my music theory.... I saw them do that live and was impressed they were so stable. Lastly, I love that although all 4 vocalists did the same parts but they all did it in their own style. Like for verses, Jae, Wonpil and YoungK sound TOTALLY different. It's just much more interesting to listen to. But somehow, they all gel together in the song. I LOVE the synth arrangement in the song. Yes, the static! And vocal slides and crowd shouting... harmony..? I don't usually like them too but Day6 do them very well. They seem to be a common feature in their songs and I dig it. Day6's music is full of surprises but not contrived. They don't throw in unexpected stuff just to be new and different, everything they do musically actually adds to the song and helps the song to say what it's meant to say. So they're not gimmicky. A lot of thought (and talent obviously) went into the writing which they do themselves. (their lyrics are great too!) PLUS, they can deliver them live. That's why I love Day6 so much! :(
Btw, I wouldn't call Day6 a rock band. If I'm not wrong, they prefer not to be limited to genres. They want to make all kinds of music. Another group I've never listened to but Gwen and Hugo's reactions are enough to make me buy the albums. Color me super curious about Day 6. You won't regret it. I like all of their albums and their covers (definitely check those out!!) like the trashy fan that I am, but I honestly believe their second album, DayDream is gold.
I'm glad you actually checked it out! I love Blood, but First Time is my favorite. Usually, I'm wary of second album releases, because sometimes its hard for groups to top their first albums especially since they lost a member. But Day Dream really exceeded my expectations!!
First Time is really good, I was torn between which I love more. I'm glad I took the time to listen to them. I've been a bit down because I'm a fan of 2ne1 and BigBang but won't hear them perform together again for who knows how long. So the 5th octave notes are C5, C#/Db5, D5, D#/Eb5, E5, F5, F#/Gb5, G5, G#/Ab5, A5, A#/Bb5 & B5. +Jinah Im yep. I listen to rock music the most and they sing WAY higher than Day6 are singing here. Letting Go's highest belted note is a mere G#4. Whereas for I Wait it's like F#4 (A4 falsettos). Neither song was even high considering all of them are lyric (tenors). American classic rock singers sing in the 5th octave all the time. Axel Rose, Steven Tyler, Miles Kennedy etc. they stay up there in the high 5th octave (albeit straining their asses off) all the time xD

Well i'm not a musician but i like writing songs. I self-learned playing guitar so that it can help me with writing my own song. ( You need some instrument to help you put out your ideas ). And as a long time Kpop fan, I realized that Kpop have alot of unique/distinct chords progressions that i rarely hear from the US-UK and my country music. I can point out which chords in songs with my ear quite easily but with the lack of knowledge on chords so sometimes i heard some weird chords, i can only point out the bass note of that chords :( Anyway I tried to find the chords progression of " I Wait " pre-chorus on my own and it was : Bm7 - F#m7 - Am7 - Em7. Am i correct ? Would love to hear Kelvin's opinion on this.
OMG I've been waiting for this video for so long!!! I've been such a fan of DAY6 since they debuted so I'm really really glad to see the reactors getting exposed to them too, especially since they stand out in the industry but aren't really as well-known yet. this is not so much as a request as it is a protip, but all of the Day6 MVs are connected, as in they all share the same story spread through different videos. most of the time, it won't really matter what order you watch the MVs because it is kind of hard to tell that they share a storyline. however, for Congratulations and You Were Beautiful are very obviously connected. so if you do decide to let the classical musicians react to either of those two MVs make sure they are in the same video

Another group I've never listened to but Gwen and Hugo's reactions are enough to make me buy the albums. Color me super curious about Day 6. Though I don't have the time to get caught up in another k-pop fandom... actually I guess I do have time since BIGBANG is on hiatus and my other favs aren't promoting currently. Day 6 here I come.
You won't regret it. I like all of their albums and their covers (definitely check those out!!) like the trashy fan that I am, but I honestly believe their second album, DayDream is gold.

I'm glad you actually checked it out! I love Blood, but First Time is my favorite. Usually, I'm wary of second album releases, because sometimes its hard for groups to top their first albums especially since they lost a member. But Day Dream really exceeded my expectations!!
First Time is really good, I was torn between which I love more. I'm glad I took the time to listen to them. I've been a bit down because I'm a fan of 2ne1 and BigBang but won't hear them perform together again for who knows how long. Wondergirls broke up and f(x) is--well I don't know what is going on there. I'm happy I found new music I very much like.

Octave is the interval between one pitch and another which is like double its frequency. An octave is made up of 8 notes. Like for e.g C Major scale is made up of C, D, E, F, G, A, B and C. The first and the final C are one octave apart. In singing one's range is noted in octave. The 5th octave is an octave above the mid C (C4). So the 5th octave notes are C5, C#/Db5, D5, D#/Eb5, E5, F5, F#/Gb5, G5, G#/Ab5, A5, A#/Bb5 & B5.
+Jinah Im yep. I listen to rock music the most and they sing WAY higher than Day6 are singing here. Letting Go's highest belted note is a mere G#4. Whereas for I Wait it's like F#4 (A4 falsettos). Neither song was even high considering all of them are lyric (tenors). American classic rock singers sing in the 5th octave all the time. Axel Rose, Steven Tyler, Miles Kennedy etc. they stay up there in the high 5th octave (albeit straining their asses off) all the time xD

Well i'm not a musician but i like writing songs. I self-learned playing guitar so that it can help me with writing my own song. ( You need some instrument to help you put out your ideas ). And as a long time Kpop fan, I realized that Kpop have alot of unique/distinct chords progressions that i rarely hear from the US-UK and my country music.
I can point out which chords in songs with my ear quite easily but with the lack of knowledge on chords so sometimes i heard some weird chords, i can only point out the bass note of that chords :( Anyway I tried to find the chords progression of " I Wait " pre-chorus on my own and it was : Bm7 - F#m7 - Am7 - Em7. Am i correct ? Would love to hear Kelvin's opinion on this.

I've been such a fan of DAY6 since they debuted so I'm really really glad to see the reactors getting exposed to them too, especially since they stand out in the industry but aren't really as well-known yet. When Congratulations came out (in my junior year of college) I showed to SO many of my friends and got them interested in DAY6, so I'm really looking forward to what the reactors think of the rest of DAY6's songs :) As always, thanks Umu for putting so much work into this series and putting your friends on the Internet so randos like us can hear their thoughts!

Tbh, i love that you guys have so many musical comments about the songs. I'm glad i don't understand much musical terminology, otherwise i feel like i'll never be able to enjoy music prior to when i was oblivious about it and just enjoyed it for what it was aha.

this is not so much as a request as it is a protip, but all of the Day6 MVs are connected, as in they all share the same story spread through different videos. most of the time, it won't really matter what order you watch the MVs because it is kind of hard to tell that they share a storyline. however, for Congratulations and You Were Beautiful are very obviously connected. so if you do decide to let the classical musicians react to either of those two MVs make sure they are in the same video
