      I've heard comparisons on another RUclips channel between the $499 Edifier S2000 MKIII and the Q Acoustics 3030i and the Monitor Audio Bronze 2, both around $500, and both driven by the $449 Denon PMA600NE, and the Edifier sounded really good, and just as good as the twice as expensive Denon and passive speaker combos

      @@cheapaudioman Klipsch "the Fives" are also available for $600. Watch for deals. But now the Fives are an amazing value. EQ now available!
      Klipsch finally updated their firmware and their phone app which allows you to EQ them to your liking.
      Right now I'm liking: dynamic bass on, but I then EQ them where bass is cut by -5. Mid bass is left flat at zero. Treble is left flat at zero.
      My reasoning: klipsch has this speaker extending 10hz too low. It produces too much distortion and bass which sounds too hefty and out of control (bloated uncontrolled vibration) . But also don't make the mistake of simply plugging in a sub to the back of these speakers. That activates a high pass filter which is much too high. I do hook up a sub woofer, but I'm using outputs on a separate receiver. This allows me to seamlessly overlap the Fives with my sub. The vocals and mids are now very clear, but I still get bass slam from the these speakers-- minus low frequency distortion from trying to extend a bit too low.
      I'm super happy with these speakers, and my work around to get them performing nearly flawlessly.

    Thanks for the review! I want to buy the M20 speakers, but I am worried about what I read regarding the power saving feature. I want to connect them to my TV, via Bluetooth (or optical). As I understand, after 20 minutes of no sounds coming to speakers, they enter in standby mode. In the manual it only says you can wake them via the remote control or the controls on the main speaker. Is it true? I mean, don't they just turn on if signal/sounds come back to them? Because if it's so... I will have to give up on them. I wanted them to "just work" whenever I start my TV, or my movie, or play some music, without me needing to wake them. Can you please confirm this issue? Thanks again!

    Hey first of all thanks for your review and your great work! I have a question, according to q acustic website there is no DAC here, as such as the M20 amplifier operates in the digital domain. Digital input signals are acquired by a digital multiplexer, which then routes them directly to a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for equalisation. Analogue signals are digitally encoded at the input of the amplifier, then follow the same path as digital signals through the digital domain to the speaker. So Im wondering how would the change in the DAC make a difference?

I'm using these for my work desk setup and as somebody who has reviewed a LOT of dacs, I wondered what your preferred DAC & AMP desktop combo would be in the (total) 600 dollar range (or less) for both? Miagi brings up an important point about how the dsp is implemented. The best way is to use the dsp as an active crossover. It doesn"t look like that"s what"s happening here because the are just using speaker wire to the second speaker. That means passive crossovers.

    • @DougMen1
      @DougMen1 2 года назад

      That's really dumb, because the ability to fine tune the driver's performance using an active network is one of the best things about an active vs. passive speaker, because you can correct driver anomalies in ways that aren't possible with a passive crossover network

    • @TheMatsushitaMan

    Isn't this speaker digital design non defeatable? i.e sending in an analogue signal from another DAC will just be reconverted with the ADC so that the EQ can be done in DSP before the conversion back to analogue and sending to the passive crossovers. That should mean adding an external DAC couldn't affect the performance. My guess would be if you noticed an audible difference, it was either due to the Bluetooth (if you were using that) codec or some other difference in the source?

    I have captured a unicorn and I have tears of joy. I bought the best sounding speakers I have ever heard and they were $75. Marantz SP1515 have 15" woofers, 5" mids and 3" tweeters with diffuser made of 8 metal plates mounted at a 45° angle about 3/8" apart. They are they closest I have ever come to a speaker sounding like my planar headphones. My girlfriend saw them and said "There is no way those old speakers are going to sound as good as the Klipsch Mirage OM-9 towers." Then I A/B'ed them and she said "Those are WAY better." Who knows if they ever had an smsl dac, schiit preamp and emotiva amp running them. Wow. 1990 speakers and the paper tweeters sound better than the hybrid titanium tweeters of the OM-9s and the tractrix tweeters of my Klipschs. It is bass reflex so I can only guess that some $10,000 speaker sounds better. The mids are the strongest part as there is no "U" or "V." They are as flat as where I grew up in Nebraska. Oh my goodness! I think I've just gone vintage!

    Hello! I just discovered this channel and I was very impressed by the quality of the information you provide.
    I am in the market for a set of powered speakers with internal DAC, Bluetooth and a line in port to add a Wiim Mini streamer. I am between two options right now: the Triangle Elara LN01A and the Q Acoustics M20. I intend to listen in my living room, which is about 2m x 2m. I will mostly be connecting to my phone via Bluetooth, but will also be acquiring a NAS server with good quality mp3s in the future. Hence, the Wiim Mini.
    I found some reviews of the LN01As and I was almost sold on them, as they are retailing now for about GBP 480. The M20s, however, are retailing for GBP 380, with outstanding reviews, even from you. The question is, given the new price points, which speakers would you recommend for someone who will not be upgrading components and is looking for the best bang for buck for around GBP 500? I am open to other suggestions, but I think my budget will not allow for passive speakers with dedicated amp that allow for Bluetooth and line in.
    Thank you!

    There are better/cheaper options out there. I did a side by side comparison using various test tracks, and the only differences I noticed between the M20 and my edifiers S350DB are the slightly better stereo separation, and weaker highs/lows on the M20. The Edifiers also have more inputs (the 3.5mm input doesn't disable the AUX input like on the M20).

      I have the M20 => take the RCA output of the DAC and feed into the RCA input of the M20. However, according to the British Audiophile channel, the M20 still digitizes the analog signal and then feeds through its internal DAC so you'll still have to hear the output of the internal DAC's processing. 😐
      I fed another DAC to it and I didn't find much difference from feeding the digital source directly into the M20.

    I live in Cambodia which means I basically can't demo anything before I buy. So I'd be doubly grateful if some reviewer out there wanted to A/B compare a pair of Q Acoustics M20's with a pair of Edifier s2000-mkiii's. Also, one thing that confuses me is why it should go without saying that a $300 outboard DAC will make these sound better, since the TI chip inside the M20s will just have to convert the signal back to digital anyway?

I had to crank up an equalizer on all my players in order to obtain a decent sound in the treble region . @@cheapaudioman I own these. While the mid-bass is impressive for the size, it can be a bit muddy, unless you are able to pull them into the room a few feet. However, once configured to use "bass cut" mode; and then paired with the SVS 1000 Pro (based largely on your recommendation) to take over everything below 80Hz, they can achieve a fairly flat, yet full-range, frequency response that scales well.
      Given the recent release of the McLaren edition of The Fives (at twice the price!), I think the long anticipated app+firmware update could be imminent.

      Dsp can do wonders for anything below 300hz. And miracles for anything below 150hz.
      But there are limitations. DSP and room correction modes can't do squat for things above 300hz. If used above 300hz all you're doing is making one seat sound reasonably well (usually not), while the rest of the sound in the room would be a mess. You really do have to fix your room, treat your room, and position your speakers if problems exist primarily in the mid range and all the way to the limits of how high you're able to hear.

    • @erics.4113
      @erics.4113 2 года назад

      @@thunderpooch I hear you on room treatment. Mine is quite the echo box and has bass issues down low and a bump somewhere low, but not that low. Lol. Maybe 50ish Hz is my guess. It's definitely from the subs. I'm looking at getting a mic and using rew next year to check it out. I don't have the ear training to know what I'm getting from the room so that will be next part of my journey.
      I'm hoping to avoid DSP if possible and do my best to treat and move speakers for ideal response in the room, whatever that may look like layout wise. I've got a blank room to start with and excited to see what I can do before and after.

    There is a problem with what you said about running them with another DAC. There are two possibilities. 1. feeding it an analogue signal eliminates the DSP-Correction as the D stands for digital. 2. The provided analogue signal gets converted to digital, run thru the DSP and then still uses the internal DAC.
    So you either still here the internal DAC or you don't here the DSP.

    12:02 -- you're just adding a DAC in front of the internal DAC here. The analog input gets converted to digital, and then goes through the same internal DAC before the output stage. Maybe the combination sounds "better" but you're not bypassing the internal DAC that way.

Apparently due to its powersave mode. 1 out of 4 times it will not wake up, resulting in rebooting the PC. Not a major concern, but annoying enough. Also reports of apple laptops, where the powered USB port is an issue (you can't run it on AC, as it messes up the connection. Maybe some early production issues, but somehing to check out if one's interested and USB is a main factor.
    Lack of dynamics and overall trebble response seems nr. 2 on that list.
