The dialogue changes depending on where you first meet Carlos and what you do afterwards once Nemesis shows up. The same goes for the items. If you meet Carlos in the Raccoon Bugle, the jewel will be located in the restaurant basement. If you meet Carlos in the restaurant, the jewel is found at the bugle. Dialogue also changes depending on the choices you make and whether or not you defeat Nemesis at any given point during these areas, other areas and what you do or don't do. Different cut-scenes also occur depending on the choices you make throughout the game. It's never the same unless you follow the same set of choices everytime.
I know what you mean, the Mercenaries Minigame lets you save survivors for items and extra time though which is close. Kinda wish the remake had a best ending involving that mechanic but it was pretty good anyways.

Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for others that could never afford the game to understand the storyline so I allow the opportunity for others to read the story behind everything.
