  • Over the past few years Bo Bichette has become one of the most consistent shortstops in baseball managing between a .290-.306 AVG and 121-128 OPS+ each of the past three seasons. However, in 2024 he has posted below a .250 AVG and .650 OPS as well as many underlying metrics also taking a massive hit. So, what's going on?

    Bo made major swing changes in his batting technique.
    Last year, Bo led the AL in opposite field hits and most hits. His signature hit was a line drive to the right field corner. His usual swing was short and quick, which allowed him to lay off curves and sliders. Bo could extend his reach and hit outside pitches to right field. His .305 average and batting were HOF type numbers.
    This year, Bo changed his batting technique, line drives to right field became ground balls to shortstop, hitting frequently into double plays. More recently, Bo switched to an uppercut swing and results were fly balls to the outfield.
    Would love to see Bo go back to the batting technique he used in previous years and see a huge improvement in this year's performance.

    In 2016 he OPS'd .794. That was a 106 OPS+

    So this video, along with other videos about why Vladdy and the Jays in general are so bad offensively, kinda makes the management/coaching staff look real dumb. It’s been pretty obvious to anyone who watches the jays that the players have been getting coached into some weird hitting strategies that has sapped all their power and ability to hit fastballs. Cause I don’t really buy that so many talented guys that have histories of being good hitters have all turned to shit.
    Awesome video by the way lol, just by the end of it it made me think of a lot of other videos popping up that last year or so.

    • @3-0Greenlight

      Glad you enjoyed! It's hard what to think about what exactly the coaches are telling them. But I will say, Don Mattingly saying this team is not a power first group of guys is bogus. Pretty much all these guys can do damage. We even saw when Danny Jansen stopped listening to the coaches he became one of the best offensive catchers by returning to his pull approach rather than trying to go to the opposite field.

    • @3-0Greenlight
      @3-0Greenlight  7 дней назад

      His approach when early in counts seems to be off. Trying to do too much to help the Jays offense which is struggling. But when his back is against the wall and he reverts to his minimalist contact centered approach he’s performing better than he ever has.
      Another reason as to why I state in the video is because his stats that value contact is down (xwOBAcon). This can be a direct correlation to his barrel % being down tremendously.
      In order to barrel a baseball the minimum is a batted ball at 98 MPH or better exit velocity between the launch angle of 26-30 degrees.
      He has not been doing much of that this year. Which means the point at which he hits the ball with the bat needs to be improved in order to have more batted ball luck.
      In other words, while he is making similar contact to years prior. It’s not as good contact. And it makes sense why his BABIP is down by around 80 points.

    The fastball issues also explain why he is best when behind in the count. In situations where the pitcher needs a strike he is most likely to see a fastball to get that strike, and maybe more to avoid a walk. Whereas when ahead in the count a pitcher is more likely to throw a off-speed pitch to try and get a batter to chase.

  • @JaredHettler
    @JaredHettler 3 дня назад +1

    Stats tell most of the story but there is always the possibility that for example his knee is still bothering him. As a hitter, everything comes from your backside. If his back knee is bothering him, its impossible to generate power. Hitting the ball with authority the other way requires pop. Which was Bo's signature. Doubles in the right center gap, etc. That could easily be the cause of all of these weird stats. Injuries will also take your head out of the game which could easily lead to him chasing pitches he normally wouldn't, etc. I bet he returns to form next year. You don't go from being a top 3 contact bat in baseball to mediocre at best overnight without something foundationally being wrong. The dude was leading in hits for a 3rd straight year before getting injured last year and hit .300 from 2019 to 2023 with three straight 20+ homer 30+ double seasons. His OBP was consistently .330-.340 every year. He was actually possibly the most consistent player in the league for that stretch. Something is wrong with him physically (and probably mentally as a result)

    It's his set up and backwards movement as the pitch is being delivered. He's got to get his uni # showing preswing at set up. The instinct to is get open at setup when your late on fastballs . The problem is he wastes time during the pitch delivery getting squared and weight back before he actually drops the barrel flat and started forward. He's picked a bigger back swing now he late. So he starts earlier getting his weight on the back side with a higher front leg lift. That's just the wrong adjustment and once you burn it in cascade motor prep memory you're screwed in game. It's going to take lord how many swings in the cage to fix it all. Add a bad knee in and your stuck cause you can't hang in the cage for the hrs necessary. What’s with this whole team this year ?
    All talent and skill, no grit and will.
    Oh I forgot, that’s the Maple Leafs, same difference…

    his nagging lower leg injury is hurting his swing. All I needed to know, all this extra research is unnecessary. Playing in Canada's colder weather isn't going to halp that body part, a swing requires all your parts functioning at a normal level. Bo's new lower leg brace is not a good sign, as it now requires a new swing technique to be embraced and he has failed to change with his new body issue...he needs to change before the injured part destroys his career.

    • @3-0Greenlight
      @3-0Greenlight  8 дней назад

      The Jays play in a domed stadium so it's never cold when they play. So it's actually more regulated than most ballparks. We'll have to see about his injury. I definitely think his knee injury last season was mismanaged.

    Bichette, Biggio, Vlad, Manoah…. Why don’t youtubers actually look at the ORGANIZATION first? The amount of clickbaity titles dragging the players first is so lazy. Let’s look at ALL of these blue jay prospects that plateaued and never reached their potential. That organization is such a joke none of these guys ever had a chance to become stars.

    • @kristopherwilson506
      @kristopherwilson506 9 дней назад +2

      there's a difference between plateauing and falling off a cliff. those four have done the latter. when a player plateaus, it's easy to blame the organization and rightfully so. when a player falls off a cliff, however, it's _more_ than just the organization at fault.
      baseball is a game of adjustments, and some of it is on the organization to help a player adjust, but the players should certainly take initiative as well

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- 9 дней назад

      @@kristopherwilson506 Well with a player like Bo, his work ethic has absolutely never been in question by anyone. Hes known specifially for being one of the hardest working stars of the game today and is known to be always willing to put in that extra work to stay at the top of his game.
      I think from last year to this year its quite clear that the Jays organizition absolutely has a training staff issue.
      Pete Walker will always be respected in Toronto, hes a legend but outside of him and his pitching staff, Id be happy to see them bring in essentially all new talents... personally, I dont blame Pete Walker and his pitching team for Monahs struggles or inability to bounce back.
      at this point, It certainly couldnt hurt to get some new eyes in the staffing room, id love to see them bring in someone like Bautisa, Encarnacian or some other former Jays big bat as a special batting coach.
      The Jays may have invested tons into a state of the art training facility but seems they put little to nothing into the actual training staff running the facility.
      The Jays analytics team is a joke when players are benched while there the teams hottest bat... just because the computer says its a bad match up! which is an issue that continued from last year into this season. Thankfully they finally pulled there heads out the sand and started playing Davis at the fans demand!
      No one in there right mind believes that players like Bo, Vlad wouldnt be able to go to any other organization and excel under new and correct coaching/training... Were likely about to see the new evironment of a highly talented and winning team (the LA dodgers) do Biggio wonders.
      Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki both had issues with the Jays rehab staff during there Jays run and spoke out about such publicly, Even Kevin Guasmen has made comments indicating frustrations he has towards the Jays analytics team and rehab staff to an extent... andd thats jsut to name a few off the top of my head, so yeah, maybe the players have been telling us the issue for awhile now but its been falling upon deaf ears.
