- Over the past few years Bo Bichette has become one of the most consistent shortstops in baseball managing between a .290-.306 AVG and 121-128 OPS+ each of the past three seasons. However, in 2024 he has posted below a .250 AVG and .650 OPS as well as many underlying metrics also taking a massive hit. So, what's going on?

In 2017 I got to see a crazy single A baseball game in lansing Michigan that had vladdy jr, Bo, tatis jr, and Jack suwinski all playing in it…. All in front of like 300 people lol
That’s crazy cause that’s how I feel about going to see Lazaro Monte’s he’s coming up soon and they have tai peete too
That is awesome!
Hell yeah! Milb rules
Had season tickets that year. Was amazing
Bo made major swing changes in his batting technique.
Last year, Bo led the AL in opposite field hits and most hits. His signature hit was a line drive to the right field corner. His usual swing was short and quick, which allowed him to lay off curves and sliders. Bo could extend his reach and hit outside pitches to right field. His .305 average and batting were HOF type numbers.
This year, Bo changed his batting technique, line drives to right field became ground balls to shortstop, hitting frequently into double plays. More recently, Bo switched to an uppercut swing and results were fly balls to the outfield.
Would love to see Bo go back to the batting technique he used in previous years and see a huge improvement in this year's performance.
Me too
Someone show the hitting coach this comment
@@Rye-jl2fk someone show Bo that comment
Really interesting to see why Bo is struggling. I had heard he was struggling but didn't look at his advanced analytics numbers because during the season I only look at my team's(Mets) advanced numbers. Great work on the video.
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed!
Interesting
To be fair, it seems like offense as a whole is way down this year. Like last night i was looking at Lindor. His OBP is under .300 and his OPS is .713. Good for a 108 ops+.
In 2016 he OPS'd .794. That was a 106 OPS+
I honestly think the league fucked with the balls again…there are a lot of good hitters not doing well
No, pitching and pitchers have evolved. I'm sick of watching Wiffle balls, personally. @@raymondclouston6255
@@raymondclouston6255goldy hitting .223 and barrels everything .. they most definitely messed with the balls again so many players struggling this year
Good context appreciate yall
It's been a strange season!
Very happy I found this channel! Excellent content

So this video, along with other videos about why Vladdy and the Jays in general are so bad offensively, kinda makes the management/coaching staff look real dumb. It’s been pretty obvious to anyone who watches the jays that the players have been getting coached into some weird hitting strategies that has sapped all their power and ability to hit fastballs. Cause I don’t really buy that so many talented guys that have histories of being good hitters have all turned to shit.
Awesome video by the way lol, just by the end of it it made me think of a lot of other videos popping up that last year or so.
Glad you enjoyed! It's hard what to think about what exactly the coaches are telling them. But I will say, Don Mattingly saying this team is not a power first group of guys is bogus. Pretty much all these guys can do damage. We even saw when Danny Jansen stopped listening to the coaches he became one of the best offensive catchers by returning to his pull approach rather than trying to go to the opposite field.
They need to get rid of the useless hitting coaches and Dumb Don Mattingly now and the team would be much better
Dante really needs to be hired as the hitting coach
I have to agree……….Ive never seen two guys on the same team with so much potential go completely in the dumpster fire like these two!
came from the stream. kawsaki video is how i found the channel!
Thanks for stopping by!
Great vid!
i remember when i first seen him in the movie "we are the millers" his "no ragrats" tattoo was priceless.
I’ve been waiting for this yay
:)
Thanks for the video!
Really interesting video. Although I was left with the impression I learned HOW Bo was struggling, not WHY, heh.
His approach when early in counts seems to be off. Trying to do too much to help the Jays offense which is struggling. But when his back is against the wall and he reverts to his minimalist contact centered approach he’s performing better than he ever has.
Another reason as to why I state in the video is because his stats that value contact is down (xwOBAcon). This can be a direct correlation to his barrel % being down tremendously.
In order to barrel a baseball the minimum is a batted ball at 98 MPH or better exit velocity between the launch angle of 26-30 degrees.
He has not been doing much of that this year. Which means the point at which he hits the ball with the bat needs to be improved in order to have more batted ball luck.
In other words, while he is making similar contact to years prior. It’s not as good contact. And it makes sense why his BABIP is down by around 80 points.
$33.6 million guaranteed. That's what what happened to Bo Bichette.
Yup tale as old as time...
Battle and grind to get the big contract and then all the motivation goes POOF, and you become a floater, bouncing around the league, hoping he can catch fire again...
It really wouldn't shock me if he's brutal on the Jays for a couple more years, gets traded to a contender, and lights it up again
He will magically get his swing back when that contract year comes up again
Ewww. I don't want him in Cleveland anymore. We spend money so much smarter...
Complacency hits players hard when they’re given the big green
The fastball issues also explain why he is best when behind in the count. In situations where the pitcher needs a strike he is most likely to see a fastball to get that strike, and maybe more to avoid a walk. Whereas when ahead in the count a pitcher is more likely to throw a off-speed pitch to try and get a batter to chase.
It's amazing how in 2024 that we can go so incredibly in depth to say "he's not making great contact on fastballs"
Stats tell most of the story but there is always the possibility that for example his knee is still bothering him. As a hitter, everything comes from your backside. If his back knee is bothering him, its impossible to generate power. Hitting the ball with authority the other way requires pop. Which was Bo's signature. Doubles in the right center gap, etc. That could easily be the cause of all of these weird stats. Injuries will also take your head out of the game which could easily lead to him chasing pitches he normally wouldn't, etc. I bet he returns to form next year. You don't go from being a top 3 contact bat in baseball to mediocre at best overnight without something foundationally being wrong. The dude was leading in hits for a 3rd straight year before getting injured last year and hit .300 from 2019 to 2023 with three straight 20+ homer 30+ double seasons. His OBP was consistently .330-.340 every year. He was actually possibly the most consistent player in the league for that stretch. Something is wrong with him physically (and probably mentally as a result)
Every video like this ends the same way: injuries.
But i still watch lmao
Loved the info!!!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Still not nearly as cooked as many other guys in baseball..bo will bounce back.
I’m he can eventually play for a decent team, I think so too. Sucks he has to waste years on the Blue Jays
I think he can too. He's been ice cold before and then broken out.
9:05 - When diving into his stats when in the hole, it woulda been _really_ interesting to have factored in the number of pitches seen in those AB’s. 🤔
What could be contributing is that he’s seeing a LOT o pitches in those times (the avg amount would be sweet to know). 🤷♂️✌️
Thanks for the feedback! I'll make a note of that the next time I do something like that!
Knowing the blue jays luck, Atkins will trade him for an underwhelming package, then miraculously, immediately after bo will get back to hitting great again.
He seemed more athletic and nimble when he first came up. I think Bo has just aged prematurely. I’ve watched him all year and he looks old out there; slow, tired, like he’s got bricks on his feet.
I don’t think he wants to be in Toronto ngl
he tied the hitch and got married
George springer video next ?
People love to jump on any bad season or decline from literally one of the best in the league. Not everyone is top 5 their entire career. Vlad is still good even though he’ll never repeat his one great season. He’s still #1 in hits by all 1B’d in the AL. Life continues.
Bo Bichette is going to be fine.
I don't think Bo is a guy you build around. However, he is outstanding offensively and love the fact he is kind of old school in the batters box (fouling off tough pitches, line drive hitter with some pop). This has got to be an approach issue mixed with an injury *assume its that right knee. Would be cool seeing him traded to a place like Seattle or the Dodgers.
He has a great ability to stay alive in at bats with foul balls, I agree it's cool to see. I do think his injury was mismanaged last season. Could definitely be a factor.
I'm just curious about when the last time you played baseball was
I like Bo. I say he needs to use his 2 strike swing all the time and maybe he'll be able to get to the fastball a lot more.
he didn't have to do that prior to this year, though. plus that'll rob him of power and extra base hits
@@kristopherwilson506 just until he gets his groove back.
I agree
It's pretty crazy but he's actually hit all 4 of his home runs with 2 strikes...
He’ll be fine. It’s not like .265 is an abysmal number.
Repunzel Bichette used to be my favorite player
I don't even watch them anymore
No baseball for me until this organization is turned over. Even the minor leagues are a barren wasteland, especially the hitting.
Disgruntled fan
He went back to being a "free swinger" in 2022. And it worked for about a season and a half. But these are the majors, and eventually it caught up with him. Pitchers know that he will chase junk, get behind in the count, then weakly ground out or K.
Yup. He's yet to have a hit in a 2-0 count this season and all 4 of his homers are with 2-strikes. he's just giving pitchers the opportunity to get back into counts by swinging freely.
@@3-0Greenlight on the 2-0 count they throw a fastball that he misses or stares at. 2 pitches later he grounds weakly to second, inning over.
I believe that Bo is mentally struggling. Maybe he is not happy with the crappy leadership and listening to trade rumours. Hard to tell. There is nothing to make me believe that he peaked early and is done.. Same with Vladdy. I am a true fan but, I don't have the knowledge beyond what I see.
I think part of it has to be mental as well. I think he might be trying to do too much to help the Jays lackluster offense.
It's his knee, drop in technique shows it.
Same problem as last year with no change
Most concerning thing about his game is not his bat. Dude does not have longevity and can't run anymore.
Baseball is a cruel game when you stop hitting.
He will be fine, I just think that he’s always gonna have these cold streaks bcz of the kinda player he is
He has been known to go very cold and then very hot. But at this point it's the worst 30 game 60 games and 162 game stretch of his entire career. He hasn't been hot in a while...
@@3-0Greenlight that’s 100% true, I just think that there are a multitude of factors that are at play here and a decent amount of them will be fixed with time
It seems to me that his nose is out of joint about something and he's just going through the motions at the plate.
Could be a mechanics problem. In the end it must be a culmination of things.
Bo Bumchette eh. Buffalo Triple A called, they need a bus driver. Bo knows......STRIKEOUTS.
His Dad could be the issue if he is still in his eat
Ear*
There seems to be a lot going on behind closed doors in the Bichette household. I wouldn't be surprised if it's hurting Bo's game.
@@3-0Greenlight how do you know
Stop explaining the stats. Anyone watching this video knows what they are or at least have a vague idea.
My 10 year old daughter watches these channels and I can guarantee you she doesn’t know what all the stats mean.
It's his set up and backwards movement as the pitch is being delivered. He's got to get his uni # showing preswing at set up. The instinct to is get open at setup when your late on fastballs . The problem is he wastes time during the pitch delivery getting squared and weight back before he actually drops the barrel flat and started forward. He's picked a bigger back swing now he late. So he starts earlier getting his weight on the back side with a higher front leg lift. That's just the wrong adjustment and once you burn it in cascade motor prep memory you're screwed in game. It's going to take lord how many swings in the cage to fix it all. Add a bad knee in and your stuck cause you can't hang in the cage for the hrs necessary. LA will fix him eventually if he listens and he'll be a steal.
Nice input, I'll go back and take some looks at his swings.
He's in a slump, he will finish strong.
Great video but that advertisement attacked me. 5’9” is average height..
LOL.. I felt that!
😂
Okay shorty
Bo hasn’t been in the lineup these past few games.
This guy will end up on the Dodgers or Giants. calling it now.
HELL NAH
houston or texas my friend
@@turbokid99 you guys both have rlly good shortstops what
Boston has always been Bo's favorite team since rooting for them from Florida when he was a kid.
Nope they aren't trading him
I think it's a combination of things. he looks like he doesn't want to be here but he's so aloof it's hard to tell. his free swinging is extreme. when he first got here he was hitting but had to lead the league in 0-2 counts. he could hit but he was swinging at any and everything. you aren't going to reach potential always being in pitcher's counts. he got better at it and lead the league in hits. he's back to swinging like a madman again. pitchers know they don't have to throw him strikes to get strikes. I think he's fed up with Vlad too. I sure am
Yup, he's giving pitchers free strikes by swinging freely. He's yet to have a hit in a 2-0 count this season. And all 4 of his homers have been with 2-strikes...
not sure how many thumbs downs are allowed. I'm confident I'll learn.
Future dodgers legend
HELL NAH
Noooooooo
Forget the Jays.
Is my boy Justin Turner with the jays???
Yup! He's been a bit hot and cold but he seems to be finding his groove again
so is Joey Votto...Votto needs to have a talk with Bo....Joey knows hitting ....Joey fixed Matt Carpenter up (temporarily anyway)
I think Atlanta trade for him, The Braves had Walt Weiss who played with his dad could help out.
Maybe. Jays FO said they aren't trading them. But if the right offer is made who knows what will happen.
he is going to be a hall of famer if he has no more big injuries but i have a feeling that knee might come back into play during a pivotal moment like october baseball
Hall of famer??? That’s a huge stretch.
Bahahahahahaha hall of famer 😂😂😂 kid has zero chance of that
@@kingslayer3796 prior to this season he was on a pace of 27 HR 96 RBI slashing .299/.340/.487 (.827 OPS) with a 126 OPS+. That's a shade below Corey Seager's career numbers and if he stays healthy at this production level he'll almost certainly be a hall of famer.
lol how is he a HOF’er? Dude hasn’t even put up 20 WAR for a career.
@@kristopherwilson506and Corey Seager isn’t a future HOFer right now either.
Vlad Guerrero Jr. has also hit the skids as a hitter. Somebody must be spiking the "juice" in Toronto with "downers."
Valddys having a really decent season this year. Not as good as he was in 2021 but you can’t complain with a near 130 OPS+
It's safe to say the Vladdy and Bo era has not been as elite as most anticipated.
@@CumLordGary Finally someone who isn't jumping on the "let's hate Vlad" bandwagon. Just because he's not putting up HoF numbers doesn't make him bad.
What’s with this whole team this year ?
All talent and skill, no grit and will.
Oh I forgot, that’s the Maple Leafs, same difference…
I came from the live stream. Who is your least favorite Blue Jay of all time??
Mitch White!!!
He was unbelievably bad with us. I couldn't watch any game with him on the mound.
I could never get behind Ezekiel Carera back in 2014-15 it always felt like we had a destructive offence and then there this guy was for no real reason other then he was a lefty
Travis Snyder. I liked him in the beginning, but he was a huge let down!
Alex Manoah
He doesnt want to play for toronto anymore !!!!!
People who miss old Bo
👇
I do!
He'll be a dodger this month
We'll see!
Blame the Blue Jays batting coach and front office. It's no secret that their entire philosophy changed after 2021 and 2022. EX: Vlad, Springer
Needs a haircut and all will be well.
Is baseball OK? Is it normal for all these stadiums to be super empty ?
It might feel that way in certain stadiums like in Toronto where moral is down. But this past weekend was actually the best in terms of attendance league wide since 2008!
The jays still get over 30,000 fans for a weekday, and close to or over 40,000 for a weekend game
@@3-0GreenlightStill 10th best attendance in baseball
obviously you haven't watch a Dodger or Yankee or Cubs home game
Sadly he is not a great infielder either
So in summary he sucks now and may not recover?
It's clear both Bo and Vlad need a change scenery. Both of them need to get out of Toronto.
Nah they need to fix their mechanics, especially Bo. Vlad just needs to take baseball more seriously in general.
The Jays are gonna trade him and Vladdy for terrible returns because Atkins and Shapiro just do Rogers bidding as opposed to what’s best for the team since they need to pay for their precious stadium renovations
Atkins said there was no way they would trade either of them and are working on extensions with them both. You are actually an idiot
They'll have a very hard time selling seats. It should be in there best interest to compete each season. We'll have to see if that will actually be the case.
Lunch angle
His average launch angle is around the same as years past. But he's not hitting the ball hard when he's making contact at the optimal launch angle.
Bichette, Biggio, & Guerrero are gonna TAKE OVER the league. What a trio..,.
Definitely has not panned out the way most thought so far.
Stop overreacting. Bo will fine. If Toronto trades him they will regret it.
Trade him to the Braves, problem solved
jays coaching staff is atrocious! donny baseball needs to go, everywhere he went, he messed things up!
Toronto blue jays...Chicago whitesox lite.
I see the Dodgers going after him for sure.
I think he'll definitely have his fair share of bidders in FA
He started playing like shit ok guys just saved you 14 mins
He wants out of Toronto lol
No he doesn't
his nagging lower leg injury is hurting his swing. All I needed to know, all this extra research is unnecessary. Playing in Canada's colder weather isn't going to halp that body part, a swing requires all your parts functioning at a normal level. Bo's new lower leg brace is not a good sign, as it now requires a new swing technique to be embraced and he has failed to change with his new body issue...he needs to change before the injured part destroys his career.
The Jays play in a domed stadium so it's never cold when they play. So it's actually more regulated than most ballparks. We'll have to see about his injury. I definitely think his knee injury last season was mismanaged.
Its the hair ... He shoudl stidy Steven Kwans game
Steven Kwan is electric!
speaks for others. Not a fan
Now do Vladdy.
Weird sponsor name 5'10 when the US male on average has a height of 5'9.
They're awesome though!
Gunnar Henderson better
Bichette, Biggio, Vlad, Manoah…. Why don’t youtubers actually look at the ORGANIZATION first? The amount of clickbaity titles dragging the players first is so lazy. Let’s look at ALL of these blue jay prospects that plateaued and never reached their potential. That organization is such a joke none of these guys ever had a chance to become stars.
there's a difference between plateauing and falling off a cliff. those four have done the latter. when a player plateaus, it's easy to blame the organization and rightfully so. when a player falls off a cliff, however, it's _more_ than just the organization at fault.
baseball is a game of adjustments, and some of it is on the organization to help a player adjust, but the players should certainly take initiative as well
@@kristopherwilson506 Well with a player like Bo, his work ethic has absolutely never been in question by anyone. Hes known specifially for being one of the hardest working stars of the game today and is known to be always willing to put in that extra work to stay at the top of his game.
I think from last year to this year its quite clear that the Jays organizition absolutely has a training staff issue.
Pete Walker will always be respected in Toronto, hes a legend but outside of him and his pitching staff, Id be happy to see them bring in essentially all new talents... personally, I dont blame Pete Walker and his pitching team for Monahs struggles or inability to bounce back.
at this point, It certainly couldnt hurt to get some new eyes in the staffing room, id love to see them bring in someone like Bautisa, Encarnacian or some other former Jays big bat as a special batting coach.
The Jays may have invested tons into a state of the art training facility but seems they put little to nothing into the actual training staff running the facility.
The Jays analytics team is a joke when players are benched while there the teams hottest bat... just because the computer says its a bad match up! which is an issue that continued from last year into this season. Thankfully they finally pulled there heads out the sand and started playing Davis at the fans demand!
No one in there right mind believes that players like Bo, Vlad wouldnt be able to go to any other organization and excel under new and correct coaching/training... Were likely about to see the new evironment of a highly talented and winning team (the LA dodgers) do Biggio wonders.
Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki both had issues with the Jays rehab staff during there Jays run and spoke out about such publicly, Even Kevin Guasmen has made comments indicating frustrations he has towards the Jays analytics team and rehab staff to an extent... andd thats jsut to name a few off the top of my head, so yeah, maybe the players have been telling us the issue for awhile now but its been falling upon deaf ears.
Both sides need to do their job.
As a NYY fan I've never liked Vlad and his mission to be as much like Griffey Jr as possible (With attitude if not his play). Don't like Alek manoah or these jays. but I like bo, I hope he recovers his game after he's traded.
He and Corbin Carroll trash this year
His team sucks I don’t think he wants to be there anymore
