David Paich actually wrote the song as a tribute to George Lucas’ first film, THX-1138. Apparently everyone in the future is called by a number in the movie. The girl he fell in love with just happened to be named 99 and that’s who he is talking about.
David Paich actually wrote the song as a tribute to George Lucas’ first film, THX-1138. This film takes place many centuries in the future where people live in a totalitarian state and are referred to by a number. Thus it’s a fantasy love song to an imagined someone in that world with the number 99. In the video, as in the movie scene where the main character (named "THX 1138" and nicknamed "Thex") is imprisoned, the room is completely white and all wear white jumpsuits.
These fellas are all master musicians.
Toto is no joke when it comes to music.
The band that gave you MJ's Thriller.
PRETTY MUCH FACTS
Steve Lukather had a hand in George Benson's Turn Your Love Around, which I love so much!🎶🕺
@@amipro380 cool I didn't know that
@@melvinwomack3717 yep! I absolutely love that song and was blown away when I discovered that nugget of info! I've known of Toto a long time but have recently discovered a treasure trove of goodies from these masters ..of legendary status!😀🎶
Yessir
This was the first Toto song I ever heard. I'm 48 now and I don't think I was even in kindergarten when this was pushed on FM radio. But I remember it well. As a musician lead guitarist I never dug deep into meanings of songs that were radio singles to me it was always the tonality and musicianship in songs like this. But it is definitely enlightening to learn what a completely different perception of these songs might be
Wow! The first reactor on RUclips to do this one.
The song is saying that in the future we won't have sentimental names, only numbers. All sentimentality lost in a sterile world. His love's identity is "99". This is the extent to which corporations and their shareholders process our existence in a corporate reality. Our government assigns us numbers from the day we're born to our death (social security #'s). We are just a number outside of our small social circles.
Once again, Very solid band with there own sound, that can not be mistaken for anyone else. Good blast from the past!!!
There's actually a couple of rumors about how it happened one of the band members was dating Barbara feldon 99 don't get smart and then the other being he's searching for that 99 out of 100
@@toddmartin1523 Agent 99, I haven't herd that in a long long time. It made me think of the "Cone of silence" Lol
The song was written as a tribute to George Lucas's film THX 1138, David Paich's intention regarding the lyrics, about a sterile society in which names are forgotten and love forbidden. Wikipedia. Thanks Jayy for your reaction! much love
Toto is as slick as pop rock music can get.
I said it before, I'll say it again, give them a continent ("Africa") a number ("99") or a name ("Rosanna"), and Toto will make a hit out of it. I know what it is about, having read the wikipedia, but I had thought that someone had a crush on Agent 99 from "Get Smart".
I had a crush on Agent 99 ❤️
Too funny..😆....that's what I always thought, too(Agent 99)!...🤔🤪😄💥👌
I thought that it was either for Agent 99 or it was so all kinds of different dudes could replace the 99 and insert the name of their respective girl. Bak in those days I was dating a girl named Maryanne, so her name fit perfectly with 99.
It’s about a futuristic movie by George Lucas. The people in the movie live in a totalitarian society where they are given a number and not a name. He’s referring to someone falling in love with #99.
Stunning, simply as that. From 1979 albun "Hydra", remarkable timing drive drumming from master (RIP 1992) Jeff Porcaro, one of his best playing songs in my opinion. A bunch of cats who were supporting singer Bozz Scaggs in studio and in live concerts as well, becoming a unmatched talented players, ever, until today, with any body near to this band perfection, soulfull mates.
Yes I agree! The piano is the signature piece of this song as well as the singing and the drummer kept a beautiful and smooth beat.
You should also react to these others Great songs from them : "I'LL Supply the love" , "Hold the line" , " Georgy Porgy" , "St.George & the Dragon" & "Endless" trust me you will loved all. Ron

GREAT song from the ‘70’s!!
One of my favorites from back in the day.
It sounds like serenade from Agent Smart to Agent 99, theoretically speaking!
Listen to Pamela- one of my favorite Toto songs!
It's about a TV show in the old days called GET SMART. Agent 99 was a woman that Agent Smart fell in love with. The show was like a funny version of James Bond and Agent 99 was like Q was to Bond. The name of the album Hydra was named from the bad guy group that was Smarts enemy. This was said by the writer of the song. But that's the woman 99 he's talking about.
The song was actually about a cartoon movie about robots. The female robot was 99. The male robot sang it to her. But I don't know of the movie was ever released. I originally thought it was about Get Smart too. THX 1138 was the movie
I think , back in the day, a lot of people thought this song was written for Wayne Gretzky :) Aside from Africa, I think Stranger in Town is my favourite Toto song.
Had heard somewhere that it was about California state highway 99 of course I know better now
WOULD YOU BELIEVE, secret Agent 99 from the 60's spy comedy Get Smart?
Actually according to David Paich, it a love song in the future when we have numbers not names. 99 is a girls name.
The best of the best ...my favourite

99 is 99 percent. If you listen to the lyrics they almost made it together and it wasn't 100% but 99%.

Steve Lukather is sexy af ❤
Steve Lukather (the singer and the guitarist in this video) hated performing this song.
Never heard of him
99 the amount of women had
Please react to Metallica fade to black lyric video
To answer your question on why he refers to a woman as a number. When the song was composed and written they were speaking of the future of 2021 all women and men were going to be robots with numbers and not names. I hope this helps
