I built this exact same Space 1999, Hawk model kit back in the 70's along with the Eagle. I was a kid then and the TV series was still on the air, first run.... I thought the models came out pretty good, but sadly they came out nothing like this one. Great job. Seeing it again makes me feel old.

Great vid !! Love Brian Johnson's designs for 1999, I bought an old Airfix version a few years ago, came out ok but this looks superb, built it 1st in the 70's, will build a 3rd and final if I can get a hold of one of these. Bucket list is a 1/48 version, maybe the 4th if I get chance. The MPC Eagle 1/48 is my favourite kit of all time so far...
I did not follow the instructions carefully and glued the wrong front parts on the side tubes, like you did, except that I was too worried of breaking the model and left it as is. Very nice build and great paint job!
Hello, I built this model in the late 79's when it came out along with the Eagle model. I was so discouraged back then at the lack of detail and how proportions just weren't right. I too wish the model was bigger as wished the Eagle one was too. But I think they are supposed to be the same scale to each other. You new model looks very well built. Great job.
Hi…. Thanks for the compliment. Yeah the original kit was definitely a disappointment lacking so much detail. You’d be pleased with this one but a 1/48 scale is close to release. Looking forward to that one for sure
Impressive build. I picked up this kit as soon as it was re-released , but have yet to build it. I kinda like the look of the window areas being black but knowing me I'd cave and paint them the way they looked on screen. You really got me wanting to build this now. Thanks for that... HAH!

Sweet job! For the Micro Set and Micro Sol bottles, I set them inside the rattlecan caps for Tamiya Spray Lacquers. And those decals are kicking my butt. I should've left the spine off; wrapping those stripe decals around the longerons was a chore. EDIT: I forgot to mention. The original 1977 Hawk kit was based on the 6" model used for long shots, such as the escort ships for the bomber.
I never knew there was a model kit of the Hawk made back in the 70s. It's funny because I had the Eagle kit and I actually wrote to MPC (FunDimensions?) back then suggesting that they release a Hawk model. They never replied though. At the end of the video you mention having a local model store. Unfortunately, hobby shops and even plastic kit sections of large chain stores seem to have gone the way of the dinosaurs. Outside of a few expensive Japanese kits at a comic book shop, I can't remember the last time I saw a model kit in the wild. There used to be a couple hobby shops here in my town, where you could buy styrene sheets and strips, paints, decal solvent, you name it. They're all gone now. I used to always see kits of cars and planes in the toy sections of stores, but they're gone too. In fact, the toy sections of most stores have drastically shrunk. I remember when the toy section used to comprise 5-6 full isles, now you're lucky if there's two isles, and that includes stuff like pool toys. Then again, maybe I just live in a sucky area. I once watched a video of how to build a cheap, full-sized corpse for Halloween. "Just get a quart of liquid latex, about $10 from any local theater supply store or craft shop." Um, no. Try $7-8 for 3-4oz! :(
Well done! Just finished one of these myself. Added the cockpit detail set, opened a boarding hatch, and even lit it. Stressful, and I made my plenty of mistakes, and yes, I put the engine caps on backwards too. Ended up just removing those little attachment points on the underside. But it came out okay in the end.
Yay, your back! Great model and super build. The orange for me is just a bit light, I would have tried a burnt orange. I bet this model would look ace with a touch of weathering.

Sounds like the Mattel Eagle. Yes that was a classic! I had one too. Those in mint condition are worth a pretty penny now. Love how Space 1999 brings back such fond memories. Thanks for watching.
At 08:05, you could have left that part out - it isn't actually part of the fuselage. During filming, a great many of the spacecraft models on Space: 1999 were hung upside down, so that no suspension wires were visible. This part is just one of the multiple anchor points for those very fine wires. It would not be noticeable on camera, or to the viewer. A lot of the time, the model would be static, but the camera would move past it, creating the illusion of movement, as the camera would be capable of very smooth movement. The suspension wires would be painted with chemicals to dull them down, which had the effect of making them brittle, and prone to snapping. Shots of multiple ships were often done using one or two ships, filmed from different angles and distances, and then composited in editing. Big models were supported from behind by large rods - sometimes up to scaffold pole size, for something like the huge vessel 'Daria' from the episode 'Mission Of The Darians', where the model was nearly six feet long.
Love this new Hawk kit I’m halfway through building mine, got the new Eagle on order as well but would mpc to do some more 1999 stuff like the Sidon fighter or the Meta probeship.
Thanks Raymond. I totally agree the new Hawk and Eagle kits are fantastic. They include all of the details we've wanted and more. No doubt the result of what happens when true fans are involved with production. Two people in particular have helped me gain a better understanding of what it takes to bring a kit to market,Todd Morton who helped with promoting the 1999 kits and Frank Winspur who was the president of Moebius models. So much is involved including licensing, machining tools/parts to make the kit, having to coordinate with the manufacturers (often overseas) and of course whether enough demand exists to make the investment. It's quite the endeavor. One guy to ask would be Todd Morton of Space 1999 Props and Ships but I haven't heard of anything regarding those ships. Thanks for watching Raymond.
I had this model but I never really appreciated it in the beginning. I always thought of it as a cheap knock off my parents bought me beause they couldn't find a "real" Eagle. Later I saw the Episode featuring this Eagle variant and had to rethink and started to appreciate it, but to my shame I had been rough on the "cheap knock off" and had it nearly destroyed. Just now I'm about to 3D print me 22" sized Eagle transporter.
Thanks for sharing. The 1/48 version of this kit is due to come out soon and I saw the prototype last year. Looks impressive too. Enjoy building the Eagle. It’s such a fantastic design
I made the original model many years ago, and I must say the level of work put in on many models now seems excessive. For example. I built my polystyrene model completely before painting. I added rocket pods from a hawker harrier to the two flat platforms under the little wings plus other scratch build parts (radar dish etc) but I never had to fill any seam lines or gaps. I painted with a brush so I never had to mask. And the paint filled any imperfections or holes.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you put a lot of effort into that ol' MPC model. It definitely needed all the help it could get. Appreciate you watching.
Fantastic results! Would you happen to know if there is a lighting kit for the hawk? Namely for the rapid fire laser located on the underbelly of the cockpit.
I just purchased the same Hawk model. I'm watching your video and watching your techniques. Thanks for your video on this! Do you have a list, and recommendations, of products and supplies to use such as paints, glues, chemical decal set, display stand, etc.?
I don't have a list but it wouldn't be very large for this build. Paints are just the Mission Models white and orange. Decals were the ones included. Decal set solutions Micro sol and set. Stand...this model was sold to someone and he bought a stand from display stands direct: displaystandsdirect.com/1-72-space-1999-hawk-mark-ix/?fbclid=IwAR1iLlIIXPUGsLVkXAolgFA7QY7BBgyZmPvtVJrzW6iE-Mxxyuf0Wuqxso4
that is fucking awesome job dude i used to love Space19999 as s little kid had an eagle and loved playing with it.Thanks for uploading that really enjoyed it
I see you fighting with seams and bondo, and putty. Have you had a chance to look into sprue goo? There are some good videos that go over this. It is my new go to for dealing with seam gaps.
@@InterstellarModeler Just a follow up., but Emil posted a new video on useful tools. Sprue goo was the second item he discussed. Here is the url: ruclips.net/video/XGjIss6plqc/видео.html
Hi Richard...actually I've not tried Alclad's primer although I imagine it's not a bad idea since it's the same brand as the paint. I just used a gloss black spray paint on this one, something pretty generic. I can't recall the brand.
Did you apply the decals over a matte (flat) finish? They tend to silver a bit. The decal set helps, but it can be too much work to apply a gloss coat, apply decals and then apply a matte coat which helps seal and protect the decals.
This silvering is really something I struggle with. They were most apparent here with the clear decals (those with only outlines). I applied them to a gloss coated surface followed by a mild dull coat and some of the still showed silvering. I'm sure this is because the surface underneath is just uneven allowing some spacing between the decal and the hull.
Another beautiful model by an amazing artist! Your ships always look great. A question about the paragraphics photoetch. How would you ever be able to see it? Maybe remove the panels on the aftward down slope of the command module and make replacements that could be removed...I cant figure that out.
Yes i think it would be very hard to see much of it. You would only get a glimpse of the interior through the main windows which you would have to cut open. I would see if anyone on the Space: 1999 Props and Ships FBook page has tried it. There are a couple of sample pics seen on the HDAModelworx website. If you go to their homepage then to > photoetch > Paragrafix or Space: 1999 you'll see them. Thanks for your kind compliment.
I built this original kit way back when it first came out. I'm recently getting back into modeling and to my delight, found this one. I started it at the beginning of the summer 2023 but I got intimidated by the sheer amount of some of the parts and decals. I must admit I zipped through your video (I so have to take my time through it) and I have to tell you--you take modeling to a new level! Right now, I'm just using basic glue, paint, etc. Do you have any wisdom to impart as I begin on this road again?
Hi, thanks for your kind comments and welcome back to the hobby. Of course my first advice is to have fun. If you're a little rusty or not as confident with your skills, start off with models that are simple to build. This will allow you to practice without too much investment in money and time. As for detailing and painting, for me getting into airbrushing made the biggest difference. I used to use rattle cans then moved to adapters that Testers made that provided a finer spray but ultimately, it was the airbrush that provided better results. Other things such as weathering and lighting have also come a long way but take it one step at a time. Good models to practice on for those skills are the Bandai SWars kits. This is a good time to get back into the hobby because there's so much out there. Many many kits that we could only dream of having as kids are now available so the sky is the limit here. Let me know if you have any other specific questions. Thanks again for watching the channel
@@InterstellarModeler I noticed that it looks like you used a primer. I have already painted a little orange--do you think I should pick some primer and prime it? or just charge ahead?
I had the 70's kit, the new one looks so much better and you did a lovely job with it.👍 Rather excited to get my hands on one! Quick Q...are you not tempted to weather a little?
The Eagle is basically a workhorse...functioning as a transporter for a variety of tasks including passengers. The Hawk is purely a combat fighter. Faster, more maneuverable and equipped with a variety of weapons.
Hi there, are there any issues that I would run into when assembling a chrome plated model like the aerial hunter killer from Terminator 2? Like sanding, gluing, or painting? or is everything the same?
I'm afraid I don't have any experience with this kit. If you search aerial killer hunter terminator on youtube there are a few videos of the model which you might find helpful. In general I would try to minimize any interaction between the glue and chrome painted areas. Hopefully there wont be any unsightly seams as this may pose a challenge to fix because of the chrome finish. Sorry I couldn't be of any further help.
Thanks. The stand was produced by Flight Pose. I tried looking for them but it appears they may not be making them any longer. I would however use with caution if you get a hold of one. I unfortunately have had problms with the silicone ends adhering to the paint and pulling it off when the model is lifted from the stand. Not good. Thanks again for watching
Just fyi....I don't often build for other people but I made an exception for a friend here. We discussed this subject and made the decision to leave it as is because the ships on the show were not heavily weathered. Thanks for watching.
It's called a FlexiDisplay but I would use with caution. Sometimes the rubber end pieces stick to your model. Not good. I only used this for the video. I plan on getting an acrylic stand to use in the long run. The base that comes with the kit is pretty lame.
@@chichiboypumpi No worries. Over the years this has become a very popular model and for years we only had an inaccurate kit from MPC that was released in the 70s. There was a lot of excitement when this kit debuted because it is a completely new kit with very accurate details. It really is a fun one to build.
Details don't mean anything, when one has to use the Hubble Telescope to see them. 1/72 is the wrong scale for this model. MPC screwed the pooch, again.
Round 2 made this kit to be in scale with the eagle kits. However the MPC eagle kits aren't scaled correctly so Round 2 is retooling th eagles in scale to the hawk kit. The new eagle kit with be 14 inches long now. Kit is expected to be released in November. You can find info in the news listing on Round 2's website.
the forward cabin is a weak sight point in the desing of this model and the eagle model it's dangerous to have a flat straight forward surface hell bend on receiving a micro meteorite full frontal whitch will penetrate the cockpit glass and make a catastropic decompresion killing everybody inside in a matter of 5 seconds . lots and lots of spaceship desings are full of weak point only the borg sphere are perfect desings with not flaws designs on the surface

Good grief i remember building this in the 70 s
Me too!
@andy morris have you tried wheelspin in Cannock
@andy morris been to the one in Stoke got a revell trabat estate nice build have you tried the one in Stafford hobby craft
Or the Swift in 1/48!
@@brianallen3760 the swift is an awesome ship
I still have the original Hawk and also the Eagle!
A really awesome Fighter 😍😍😍👏👏👍👍👍!!
Totally agree, thanks for watching
The MMP orange is a nice match to the studio model.
that takes me back built a few of those
I had this model but I never really appreciated it in the beginning.
@@InterstellarModeler oh yes. I'm a livelong scifi fan and the Eagle Transporter were always my favorites.
Beautiful Build .
thank you
Lovely build. Thank you.
thanks
I made the original model many years ago, and I must say the level of work put in on many models now seems excessive. For example. I built my polystyrene model completely before painting. I added rocket pods from a hawker harrier to the two flat platforms under the little wings plus other scratch build parts (radar dish etc) but I never had to fill any seam lines or gaps. I painted with a brush so I never had to mask. And the paint filled any imperfections or holes.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you put a lot of effort into that ol' MPC model. It definitely needed all the help it could get. Appreciate you watching.
I remember having this toy as a kid
Super nice build
Thanks Samuel
Nice build.
Thank you Shawn
Awesome! Well done! Thank you.
Youre welcome and thank you for your compliment.
great build! greetings from S A
appreciate the compliment, thank you
Fantastic results! Would you happen to know if there is a lighting kit for the hawk? Namely for the rapid fire laser located on the underbelly of the cockpit.
I've not seen that although I imagine you could probably design one with help of modeltrainsoftware. Thanks for the compliment
I love models I still have the sub and the flying sub from voyage to the bottom of the sea they got to be 30 plus years old
I just purchased the same Hawk model.
Stand...this model was sold to someone and he bought a stand from display stands direct: displaystandsdirect.com/1-72-space-1999-hawk-mark-ix/?fbclid=IwAR1iLlIIXPUGsLVkXAolgFA7QY7BBgyZmPvtVJrzW6iE-Mxxyuf0Wuqxso4
that is fucking awesome job dude i used to love Space19999 as s little kid had an eagle and loved playing with it.Thanks for uploading that really enjoyed it
You're welcome and thanks Kevin I appreciate you leaving the compliment.
I see you fighting with seams and bondo, and putty. Have you had a chance to look into sprue goo? There are some good videos that go over this. It is my new go to for dealing with seam gaps.
I’m not familiar with it. I will definitely look into it, thanks
@@InterstellarModeler Just a follow up., but Emil posted a new video on useful tools. Sprue goo was the second item he discussed. Here is the url:

hi Oggie, alclad suggest to take the alclad black primer, is it what you did or if you took another primer brand ? thanks !
Thank you!@@InterstellarModeler
@@InterstellarModeler I noticed that it looks like you used a primer. I have already painted a little orange--do you think I should pick some primer and prime it? or just charge ahead?
Very Nice
Awesome 👌.
Thanks 🤗
Hey intertsteller could u tell me where I could pick this model up love to model one - btw nice job
Hi Ted...you can currently find it online. Two websites that I know of are HDAModelworx and Culttvman. Thanks for your kind compliment
I had the 70's kit, the new one looks so much better and you did a lovely job with it.👍
Rather excited to get my hands on one!
Quick Q...are you not tempted to weather a little?
Thank you....and yes I was tempted but these ships were never heavily weathered on the show and I wanted to replicate the look we saw on TV.
@@InterstellarModeler Understood, fair comment and I greatly appreciate the reply👍
What is the difference between the hawk fighter and eagle transporter ..I always thought they were the same ship.
The Eagle is basically a workhorse...functioning as a transporter for a variety of tasks including passengers. The Hawk is purely a combat fighter. Faster, more maneuverable and equipped with a variety of weapons.
@@InterstellarModeler ah.i see.thanjs for the clarification 👍
Your 1/48 scale model is museum quality.
thank you
Vallejo paints are great, but I've found that Andrea paints give a better matt finish.
Good review but this is a completely new tooling/kit not a rerelease?
Yes you're right....that's true.
Revell liquid glue for plastic i find is best or airfix glue
excellent thanks. It would have definitely helped here.
nice work....who makes the stand?...
@@InterstellarModeler yeah- that's bad...any other recommendations for stands?
Do u know where I can find the model Battlestar valkyrie
I'm afraid not....try putting a post on Starship modeler's facebook page
Imagine the glare thru the glass with the white paint...
Yes exactly.
When you were wet sanding the putty on the seams - what grit were you using ?
I started with 400 grit sand paper then moved up from there to 800
Interstellar Modeler Thanks Oggie!! You continue to inspire and influence my model building in a positive way !!
nice model .. t recall those from the show ... they pooched the show ratings so bad they dropped them as fast as they could
My main engine bell “fuel hose / tube” seemed like it was melted from the molding process. 🙁
Try contacting Round2. They were pretty helpful when I had problems with the 1/350 Enterprise.
So it's a re-pop?..i thought it was a all new tooling?
Sorry for the confusion...it is a completely retooled kit.
@@InterstellarModeler thanks now I will buy one👍..but I wish it was in 1/48 scale to match the eagle
PROTIP: Seams suck. vallejo 401 plastic putty is a god send.
;)
It really is.....thanks for watching
And now the weathering?
Just fyi....I don't often build for other people but I made an exception for a friend here. We discussed this subject and made the decision to leave it as is because the ships on the show were not heavily weathered. Thanks for watching.
Is it 1 /72? Isn't there a 1/32 version?
This is a 1/72 scale. The only other commercially available version was the MPC kit from the 70's. I believe the scale was close to this. Thanks
@@InterstellarModeler ok thanks for replying enjoying your builds
What did you use for the base?
It's called a FlexiDisplay but I would use with caution. Sometimes the rubber end pieces stick to your model. Not good. I only used this for the video. I plan on getting an acrylic stand to use in the long run. The base that comes with the kit is pretty lame.
model building in belgium is as good as dead such a shame
Sorry to hear that
@@InterstellarModeler yeah me to i still got a schip to build a trawler refit as a sub hunter
I don't remember this in the show
Only appeared on the one episode Wargames.
@@InterstellarModeler I was so young then the only episode I can remember very well was journey into the black sun.
@@chichiboypumpi No worries. Over the years this has become a very popular model and for years we only had an inaccurate kit from MPC that was released in the 70s. There was a lot of excitement when this kit debuted because it is a completely new kit with very accurate details. It really is a fun one to build.
Why is your video such low resolution?
Not sure...doesnt appear so on my end.
@@InterstellarModeler What resolution are you uploading? It should be HD 1080p minimum.
will check..thanks
@@StefRush 1080 isn't good for Android phones.
@@dalethelander3781 Have no idea what you mean by that... Who is talking about Android phones?
Details don't mean anything, when one has to use the Hubble Telescope to see them. 1/72 is the wrong scale for this model. MPC screwed the pooch, again.
Round 2 made this kit to be in scale with the eagle kits. However the MPC eagle kits aren't scaled correctly so Round 2 is retooling th eagles in scale to the hawk kit. The new eagle kit with be 14 inches long now. Kit is expected to be released in November. You can find info in the news listing on Round 2's website.
The hawk looks good, not as good as the eagle, and I’ve never seen or heard how the hawk lands. There are no obvious landing gear components.
I dont think that was ever intended so it was left out of the design.
the forward cabin is a weak sight point in the desing of this model and the eagle model it's dangerous to have a flat straight forward surface hell bend on receiving a micro meteorite full frontal whitch will penetrate the cockpit glass and make a catastropic decompresion killing everybody inside in a matter of 5 seconds . lots and lots of spaceship desings are full of weak point only the borg sphere are perfect desings with not flaws designs on the surface
Yes that is true....but they look cool on screen. It's all about aesthetics, thanks for watching
That's awesome!! Beautiful build!!! I have this kit and was wondering how it went together, thanks you for sharing!!!
