- In order to explore one of Sri Lanka’s most unique and ancient sites you will have to climb up-way up. Perched atop a rock plateau, 660 feet in the air, are the ruins of the 5th century fortress of King Kasyapa, known as Sigiriya. The large rock it sits on was formed from hardened volcanic lava dating back to prehistoric times, while the fortress is entirely surrounded by what are believed to be the world’s oldest landscape gardens. Today, Sigiriya is distinguished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains the most visited attraction in Sri Lanka.

David Abeywickrama Yeah, I have a list of other places because I have a Tamil friend that's taking me to Sri Lanka to visit her family, but I can only add a few so I have to prioritise.
Fiha Rani You are always welcome here
Thank you for bringing places like this to my attention. Reminds me why I need to spend my money on travelling more.

I'm from Sri Lanka this is a real thing we Lankans are so proud about but Im proud to see my country in The Great Big Story ❤
Hey! I've been there! It was unbearably warm during the climb but on top there was the nicest breeze, and an amazing view of the surrounding area.
Wow! That is just amazing and breathtakingly stunningly beautiful. The View!
I've been there. It was so beautiful.
As this is the first video of where I actually have been, it’s kinda cool. By the way I’m half Sri Lankan, why I’m explaining more. Sri Lankan means : lion Blood(maybe people), this rock is less known than the Taj Mahal but has way better story than it (even if the price for Whites is 50x that of locals) The story starts with a king starts castle there because in the winter he can live on the top and in the summer at the bottom. It is as well a good fortress. When it was Inherited there were disputes so one of the two princes needed to go to Southern India to hide. After a while the the prince comes back to take his homeland . The Current King rides in on Elephant back. The twist is that there was mud laid by the enemy for tactical advantages. To get out of the mud the King turns back, but his soldiers thinks it a retreat. He commits suicide before the war ends because of his failure.
Nathaniel Carlyon Sri Lankan doesn't mean lion blood. But sinhala does
Sinha or singha = lion
La or Lé = blood
I think the closest translation of ‘Sri Lanka’ is ‘resplendent isle’. Sinhala means ‘blood of the lion’.
It’s believed that the the fortress was built by the prince who usurped the throne from his brother, and not by the father, so it was not an inheritance. His father was one of the greats in building the irrigation network though, created some great works.
There's also a brilliant museum at the bottom
At last my favorite channel in Sri lanka 🇱🇰
another place to go on my bucket list :)
Whoever made this video deserves an award. Magnificent.

Dear Big story team
I really like lota of story you shared. May I ask how did you find all these stories? Your stories are around the world, did you travel to all of this place?
I wonder that as well
Something that fits lord Ravan. The paintings look very dravidian and beautiful. Hopefully I'll visit. Cheers from India.
Lol sri lankans dont belive those fantasy storys
This was built way after Ravana . It was built by the Sinhalese .
@Aravinda Priyadarshana no hes native sri lankan called vedha from the tribe yaksha. Basic research would have told you that.
@Aravinda Priyadarshana lol what , why are you trying troll about basic lankan history ? Sinhalese arent the natives to sri lanka , veddhas are and they are dravidian. The language they speak is dravidian.Sinhalese are people who came from india much later and Sinhalese is a sanskrit language. I know cause Im sinhalese too dumbass. Theres no sinhalese caste thats yaksha and sinhalese dont have tribes either. Yasksha is tribe .And sinhalese buddhist arent even a tribe. So dont know what the fuck youre on about.
@@jubjub9904 Linguists have concluded that the parent Vedda language is of unknown origin. The current language is heavily mixed with Sinhala and in some areas with some Tamil. I’m not sure what you mean by Sanskrit language, but Sinhala is an Indo-Aryan language, with a Brahmic script. The word ‘Sinhala’ is originally from Sanskrit though.
There’s no proof that there was any king called Ravana in Sri Lanka. If he existed in pre-history, yes, he might be from the indigenous people who would be related to the Veddas. But if he existed, considering how much both groups have mixed in genetic terms, it’s probably then not wrong to call him an ancestor of the Sinhalese as well.
i hope can reach here one day.
Ancient Sinhalese technology and Art marvels ❤
It looks Beautiful.
i really want to go there!
me too
Yes, "study" the frescos.
You need a whole damn day just to ascend and descent. But it is worthy though!

Thought the thumbnail was from Fortnite. Great video nonetheless, such an amazing fortress! And the location it’s placed in?! Unreal :D
dont get me twisted but that place would be a great map for COD or CSGO
Nahom Werku yeah. CoD! Or R6s!
Well there was an actual battle there
Sorta looks like a battleship in the jungle.

Constructed an epic fortress on top of a giant limestone rock
Can't draw boobies right
Cause they all look the same?
Cuz that might be the ideal look by that time. Sri lankan women in ancient times wore just a cloth over their breasts just for covering.
Quite normal when you consider the climate.
Looks like something I would build in minecraft
I went there
Someone Special how much did it cost?
It’s free my man
It was 30 USD for the entry fee, but I went a couple of years ago so the price might have changed.
Whoops they consider me as a local although I was born in australia, maybe that was the case haha.
Matale is pronounced "Maa-ta-lei", not "Ma-taal".
Shak Pherze he spelt all of the names wrong lol 😂
Yo trust me u have to go to sigiriya because i have gone to it 26 times
weird how sri lanka is THE place to go now
carmine Why shouldn't it? It's a great country.
scorpioninpink ....just kinda annoying when some place gets all popular from instagram and facebook and then everyone goes. traveling is so easy now todo and mostly about bragging rights. sad.
Sri Lanka is an island paradise, instagram had nothing do with the country’s beauty
Been there
It's the air temple from avatar :D
What is the sound in the back ground

U don’t fool me I know this is battle island from fortnite
This comment has been invaded by Sri Lankans

Dogs guide tourists in Sri Lanka.
They're very friendly and go all the way with you on the trip.
Aw, would have been more fun to only be able to rock climb up there.
you pronouced the king's name and "Matale" wrong
i need to go here
not gonna lie. The thumbnail looked like it was Fortnite
Well it *is* a fort
Aliens!
SICK562CKRISS probably. But you may have a lot of people disagreeing with you.
Btw the frescoes are also known as sigri graffiti
Remind me of Viking place in fortnite
Thunderbluff :3
You know when you had imaginary argument, and you do it while playing a video, and you realize you miss the entire video as it ends, despite of being on headphones, because you're too angry and violent while sitting still in your chair. Yeah there's something wrong with me.
Hello
