I like the older ones up to the "3" series, the "5" series Im just not liking....(maybe the 543 (but I have not ran one) I really want to do this build now!!!
They are a great firewood saw 👍. Base gasket delete and a timing advance perks them up nicely on top of the MM. Have a great weekend and merry Christmas. Forgot to say, the 455/460 rancher clutch cover is a great upgrade too as it gives you a nice large side tensioner instead of trying to find that little one in there.
Love watching all the different dyno data , nice round curve this one ! You say 6 hp is low for cc but I want to use it in the woods and that’s the real proof! It’s lighter no matter what! Fun answer to new stuff! New stuff is cool too from what we see in the shops.thanks for your effort!
I have a 359 that was ported by rich dugen , its just a nice solid reliable runner with a 28 " bar , i do wish it put a little more oil on the bar but 🤷♂️
@@dynojoemods2764 yeah it would.. If anyone could pull it off its you. I couldn’t figure out how to drill out crank so I could fit a bearing onto the piston rod. Was gonna try a normal drill and drill bit, but don’t think that would be precise enough
This is awesome and fun to watch. I would bet that with a little more tweaking you can get that HP even higher but still it is good increase of power. 👍
Nifty build. I don't know if the Stihl piston is windowed enough and changing from outside transfers to inside transfers might pose a flow problem. I can't help but consider JB weld to reduce case capacity. Just my clueless ramblings. Thanks for showing us.
@@brettblack7049 I theorize increased pressure to push charge up transfers through a windowed piston. I kinda remember the case volume on the 350/359 being a bit large. Could be my imagination.
That's an amazing build Joe!. 6HP is still like a 15% Gain over a stock 272XP so I'd say it's pretty good (especially considering it's weight). Maybe try a 372XP carb for some extra power?
Very cool build Joe. What do you enjoy more, building this type of hybrid/ custom or porting saws. Hope you're staying warm, sure looking different than this video over your way now 🥶.
@@dynojoemods2764 I figured. I like modding anything I can to fit my needs. It seems everything can use a little modding lol. If you need some chains done up let me know, I'll be heading past this weekend.
He's got snow now, and cold temps, must have recorded it earlier, edited and then posted. Where you at, Joe and I are both in MI, he's a bit further south though.
Quick question on a muffler port job someone drilled holes in the front of the muffler and it burns the tree as it is cutting it if I pull that from defissrr off and biuld a plate to vent it to one side will that change the way the saw runs much it runs great but can't be burning the wood as I cut it well could get ugly. Thanks have fun love playing with two strokes.
Interesting build for sure. I'd be curious to know how your homemade intake boot is arranged internally. There may be some steps in the airflow that's hurting your performance.
I ran a 359 for the first time just a couple weeks ago. It was completely stock and I was in LOVE! The reason I liked it so much is because it felt sooooo similar in size and weight to a 350, but with an additional 10cc! I bet it feels Amazing with even more cc's. I would be bummed too with only 6hp though. Definitely a disappointment and surely it should be capable of more power than that. Gotta be getting held back. I for one would love to see you work the bugs out of this saw. VERY interresting. I would also love to see it compared to a good ported 359 and 357. But I think you may have those in another video. I'm pretty sure I've seen that you have gotten the Echo 620 to produce 6.8 hp and Charlie has gotten 7.2 hp, so yeah...if I built a 70cc saw that only produced 6hp...I'd be totally bummed out. Gotta be something going on. My heart weeps for you!
They are a comfy chassis. Yeh it hurt pretty good.... having some 60cc best it in the hp output. Might have to try some other things. See if I can get some more out of it
I bought a used Husqvarna 450 X-Torq about 3 years ago to cut up a tree in our front yard, it's been a good saw so far for my needs but I got it before I really started researching chainsaws very much and have seen all of the mods and builds that can be done. Do you have an opinion on this model and do you know what mods would work to make it a real performer rather than just a homeowner saw?
While it doesn't seem super impressive for a 70cc saw, it would also be nice if you report power/weight. This is what really matters for a chainsaw, since you have to carry it. I think people get a little too focused displacement. While it is generally going to be the limiter on power, power:weight is what makes a saw usable.
so to make a comment on the part where your complaining that it is low on power for a 70cc saw ... this isn't a 70 cc saw it is a 359 with a big bore kit ... the power still has to go through a 259 crank , clutch , sprocket and bar ..... i haven't had a 357/359 apart , so i can't speak to how well theses parts will hold up to the higher hp .... but you are putting 50% more power through it . also with the smaller saw , it won't wear you out and you will be faster and less tired operating it ..... which would make it a more productive saw over one on a larger heavier frame that makes more hp
Yes, the rest of it is lighter than the 70cc saws. But with the engine itself displacing 72cc 34mm stroke x52mm bore I had hoped to make the same type of power as my other 70cc builds. It is a nice saw to run and use. Huge increase over stock.
I would add that this 359 is only 34mm stroke. This I believe would also hold this saw back as the modern 70cc saws now carry 36mm strokes. Night and day difference between an 038 and the 044
that seemed easy ...... i wonder if there is room for a 58mm big bore cylinder from a 395 ? :D so along the same lines as your build , it seems very possible to fit a 272 cylinder onto a 257 / 262 ( maybe even with a 254 with a 257 / 262 crank ).... which would be very similar to your build , only smaller, lighter , and with worse antivibe
Dyno: I’ve got a vintage Husqvarna 380CD and 288xp (old one with metal chain brake). If I go bigger bore I can go sideways but the stroke has to match, correct.? Or does one have to replace connecting rod?
That is awesome. That may be the perfect firewood ripper.
She ain't low on power.. You just ain't found and fixed the bottleneck yet 😎
That's a cool ass saw. I love the gritty ones. Thanks for sharing man.
Still rock the 357xpg. Have a 359 with the transfer caps shaved. 372 barely gets any use, the 500i took over most of it's duties

You can also bore the factory cylinder to fit that 54mm piston as well eliminating the need for extra bracket welding

Would drilling the jets and boring the carb be a easier option then trying to fit a bigger carb to it?
The problem is getting enough air, not getting enough fuel.

It is a fairly straight shot. Minimal disruption. Until it meets the cylinder. As the 272 has an odd intake port
