- It’s very easy to get Emvoice One to sing your lyrics: draw a note, type in the words and the Emvoice vocalist sings it. But when you try to make an entire song, you’ll quickly discover it’s not so simple. This is a video manual of everything you need to know. It covers many things you won’t find in other videos, including Song Export, User Dictionary, Alternate voice), Phonemes, a comparison with Synthesizer V, as well as my thoughts about adding legato and vibrato.
While this video is directed at users of Emvoice One, a lot of the ideas would be useful to anyone creating with all virtual vocalists, including Synthesizer V and Vocaloid.

Note: I've been alerted that I made an error in the part about the Synthesizer V. Eleanor Forte was one of the first voices released for Synthesizer V, back in 2018. So they have had English language voices from the beginning. It's the other voices that are coming out now. Well, I did say that I didn't know much about Synthesizer V or Vocaloid. : ) Видеоклипы
Finallyyyyyy, someone who is genuine and real. There are so many worthless annoying youtubers out there, and as you mentioned, so many are just talking about themselves and are looking for self-glorification nowadays. I spent hours and hours looking weeding through the garbage to find how this actually works for someone like me who is a pianist and a composer; wanting to make my music come to life with being able to put a virtual voice to my compositions. THANK YOU!! I appreciate your informative video and your approach.
Well nickniko, After 14 years of doing these things, I've never made one cent from RUclips and never expect to, but every now and then I get a comment like this one from you that makes it all worthwhile. You get it. All I'm trying to do is to help people. Thank you.
Just bought Emvoice One Lucy, searched for tips and tricks...and I'm glad I subscribed to your channel :) Excellent stuff!
Thank you so much!
Probably one of the most complete tutorials I have seen. Thank you very much
I just bought Emvoie on a whim in the hope that I could capture a melody from my midi. After watching the Envoice vids your video was served next, I am so glad that I took the time to watch it all! I gained so much from it. A Big Thank You for sharing.
Thank you Alan. I'm really happy you found it useful. And they've since added new features, and a new voice, Keela!
The most complete tuto I've seen thank you so much ;)
Glad it was helpful, Tony.
Lucy purchased. She is now singing in my doom metal music \m/
Wow, what a masterclass tutorial. I have emvoice and just stumbled upon Synthesizer V and yes it is next level and I will be buying it.
Thank you, Mike. I'm so happy you found it useful.
I've just bought my first Emvoice, the new "KEELA" voice. Your tutorial is very instructive and helpful. Many thanks!
Thanks, Frank. Have fun with it!
Lots of great tips and ideas to improve workflow. A must watch for Emvoice owners especially, and for anyone considering a vocal synthesis library purchase. Great work Reid! 👍
Thanks Jeremy. I thought I was crazy making something so long, so I really appreciate that you like it.
Sincere thanks for this. I imagine this took quite a bit of time and care. Very thorough and very helpful.
Thank you! You are right about how long it took!
Great tute and demo. Many of these videosI can’t stand the talking head, but you have a casual way that captured my attention. Your song ended up sounding like something in a David Lynch flick. Excellent. Thanks for all your work.
Thank you!
This software is truly amazing. The future is this!
very comprehensive. thanks for making this
Thanks, Robert.
Thanks for a very useful and informative video on using emvoice.
I'm glad it was helpful. 😀
Fantastic tutorial
Thank you, Daniel!
This is so much fun!!! Man, your note length and legato section--for some reason it took me a couple of views to get it, but once I got it, the process felt obvious. Much obliged, Reid.
Thanks, Luis. Yeah, I agree. Emvoice is super easy, once you understand how it works. But it's not something you'll figure out without reading the manual or seeing a video.
@@ReidRosefelt The manual seemed to be lacking. But maybe I didn't know what to look for.
Thanks for this video. It was very informative and useful. You used a fantastic format that made it very practical and wish other videos used it.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
@@ReidRosefelt I bought it Emvoice yesterday with Lucy and Jay and working through my cover arrangement for Male Voice Choirs of the Beatles, Let It Be. I think I will be watching your video again many times today.
A new version, just released, permits much better splitting of existing lyrics! I like it!!
Yes, they are working hard to keep making it better. Of course that means my video will go increasingly out of date. : (
First, your song is not stupid, I really enjoyed your song, the melody is very catchy and your cords are groovy, thanks for the tutorial, keep up the good work.
The thing is, I wrote the song back in the 90s. I liked it then, but now I'm so far away from that time in my life, I'd never write anything like it today, either lyrically or musically. We have to keep learning, you know? But I love that you enjoyed it. Maybe I was just being defensive by calling it stupid before anybody else could. It is amazing that by doing this tutorial, I can share a song that otherwise would just be an old piece of paper with lyrics and chords. Otherwise, that's all it ever would have been.
@@ReidRosefelt I write music myself, and believe it or not, many people dream to be able to write and create music as well as you have shown us, there is no age on good music, never stop, take care .
@@dave57945 That's very kind of you and I appreciate it. I continue to write all the time, and some may turn up here. 😀
Great tips! Thanks!
Glad it was useful.
Really helpful video. thanks a lot!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Thanks Sir, your video is really helpful
Thanks! It makes me feel good, as it took a long time to do.
Thank you Reid for this wonderful resource. Your video enabled me to make a decision on whether to buy this software or not and having done that, your very clear instructions have since been invaluable. I’m sure Emvoice are very grateful to you!!😉
Thanks, DLL. The one guy I know at Emvoice has been very nice. But to be clear, I paid for my two voices. Going forward, I only want to make videos on software I buy.
Reid that's good to know. At least you can be totally honest with your appraisal of the software. My son bought Vocaloid but I much prefer Emvoice and so does he now. It's certainly the most natural-sounding software I've heard. "Jay" is on special offer at the moment so I'm thinking of buying that voice as well What do you think - is he as good as Lucy?
@@daddylongles I haven’t experimented with Jay as much. But I think the demo should show you enough to make an informed decision.
Excellent explanation and tips.
Thank you! I'm glad it was useful.
Thanks 👍
Watched the entire video. Those are some great workflow tips for really any of the vocal synths. Some good basic tuning ideas as well! Also that painting at the end was cool. DIdn’t realize it was a painting in the thumbnail. (At leat I’m assuming it was.
Yes, it was the nice stock photography picture! : )
Excellent Reid, excellent.
Thanks so much, Ric.
I’ve just watched this again the whole way through. What I admire about your approach Reid is that you stick with things, you put in the time and the effort. You experiment, try stuff out, fall over but get up again. You don’t just pack it in when it doesn’t work, especially if something doesn’t happen automatically.

I use Emvoice in my ambient electronic cosmic music. I don’t use song tracks in my music , however also for my use Emvoice one is the best tool I have together with Vocalise in NI and for whispering words , I still use Vocaloid5.
Thank you Emvoice …its great ⛩
Thanks for the idea. I will explore using it in my ambient stuff too.
How does Vocaloid compare?
@@dotsunmoon vocaloid for me has a lot more functions, however more difficult and complex to use . I love the quality of Emvoice and the easy use.
@@franslemaire-micado thanks
thank you
You're quite welcome.
Great video Reid, I have Synth V and Im stuck because the workflow is just slow when writing, Im waiting to have realtime midi implementation and hear random lyrics or whatever you want, that way you can know exactly on cycle loop if this or that word and melody will work or not. I have songs that done before and imported the midi files and they just dont work or they need too much detailed fixes, thanks for sharing your workflow and review.
That's interesting, Oscar. I hear such amazing results from Synth V that I think I may try it with Solaria someday.
Thanks for the video! I just purchased Emvoice (Jay) to help create rehearsal tracks. I wonder if you know how to make the voice hum? Just a closed-lip mmm. I don't want the HU part, just the mmm. PS. Thanks for the Madonna story. Love to hear the behind-the-scenes stuff!
Good question. There's nothing like that in the phonemes. It would be a good feature request. This is something you can do really well in a sampled library, although I can't think offhand of a good free one. Maybe get on the mailing list for Splash Sounds--sometimes Indie Voices sells for as low as five or ten bucks. Also, you can easily do oo or ah with Emvoice using phonemes in the meantime. Thanks for watching my Madonna video(s).
When I bought Lucy, it cost me NZ$350. I thought that was a good buy because it was so amazing to have a singer at my fingertips. When I bought Jay yesterday, it just cost me NZ$70 which I was so happy about.
Wow! That’s quite a difference.
And I will buy them today for 39 $
Thanks Reid. Excellent tutorial! Now who to go for, Jay or Lucy?
I thought I answered this before, sorry. I see I didn't. Just get the free demo and see the one you feel is best for your music. Personally I started with Lucy.
Hello thanks for the awesome comparison between the 2 software 😁 I also heard about this other software called Cevio and thinking about getting it because I quite particularly like their voicebank Kafu. But I also want to get synthV. Which one should I get?
I don't know anything about Cevio, but I'll check it out. But I highly recommend Synthesizer V and the best voice, Solaria. If you're interested, you should download the free Synthesizer V software and some free limited edition voices. Just know the full app is a lot better.
Thanks for the great tutorial! Is it somehow possible to copy the DAW piano roll notes and paste it to Emvoice? I could not manage that with FL Studio up to now
You can do it, but it's not a direct copy. what you do is drag your piano roll MIDI notes into the track where Emvoice is. Then push record and they will be added to the emvoice track. Expect to do a bit of fix-up, but it works.
Reid, any thoughts on eastwest Hollywood backup singers our voices of soul? Those appear to be in the same space as well! Great video sir!
Emvoice is probably best as a lead vocal, although I suppose you could layer a lot of them. I tried the Hollywood Backup Singers out when I had Composer Cloud. I was really looking forward to it, but was very disappointed. For backup singers I prefer the Orchestral Tools Female Soul Ensemble, which can be purchased separately out of their "LA Sessions" package. If you like it, you can also buy the Male Soul Ensemble. They are both 34 euros. For me the best way to add backup singers is PGMusic's Band-in-a-Box. They've got some great Real Tracks, particularly the gospel/soul stuff. But it's a lot more money--although you can buy the basic program and just buy the vocal real tracks.
Emvoice voices were $39 this past week, so I bought Keela just to try it out. Thanks for this detailed video! Your own vocal patterns remind me of Woody Allen and I found it very entertaining. It made my day! 😄
Maybe it's the glasses? : )
@@ReidRosefelt Nah, it's the Brooklyn accent! East Village resident for 30 years; now down South. LOVE the Brooklyn accent (you'd be very popular down there - folks love it here as well!) Though, like Jeffy - folks outside NY probably can't tell the difference between Queens (Woody) and Brooklyn (you). You're definitely cooler looking than Woody:>))
@@remembertobe-effortlessly But I'm from Wisconsin! 😀
@@ReidRosefelt Then you do a wonderful imitation of a Brooklyn accent! Brooklyn Wisconsin or New Delhi, great voice, great presentation!
Doesn’t Vocaloid 6 have ARA2 support?
Thatd be pretty useful in the other tools.
Wow, synth V does have a lot of tuning options.
Super helpful video! I do wish you had made your voice mono in the recording though. It's a little disconcerting only hearing you on the right side of my headphones. :)
Sorry about that. I don't hear that when I listen with headphones, and you are the first person to point that out to me. But this was the first video I did with a new setup and people did tell me that the audio in a few videos I did after this one (Desperately Seeking Susan, etc) weren't balanced. So I started mixing them mono.
For vibrato, you can import the vocal file into Logic and use flex pitch.
Great idea. You could do the same easily with Cubase and other DAWs or with Melodyne and plugins of that nature. A lot faster.
@@ReidRosefelt , correct.
This has been REALLY helpful - thanks!
Thanks, Bill.
It was a wonderful useful video..I watched completely without skipping anything bcos it was super useful..Thanks a lot Reid..I appreciate your interest and research and I hv already subscribed..Would like to get in touch with you since I am also doing lots of research on the AI singers in my albums...How should I reach you btw ? Thanks..
Thank you. The best place I've found to learn about AI singers is the composer's forum, vi-control.net. They have a subforum devoted to Vocal Synthesis, which has a lot of great discussions on Synth V. If you join VI:Control, you can DM me there. There is also a good Synthesizer V Forum on Facebook.
@@ReidRosefelt Thank u..would surely join
Great video about Emvoice. I posted a link to your video in the 'Emvoice Users' group on Facebook. I've been using Lucy for about 18 months by now. It's so much fun working with Emvoice.
Thanks, Preben. I agree with you. It's great fun. I like Lucy so much I bought Jay before the sale ended.
I uploaded a song only used emvoice if you want some example. You are welcome!
Nice work, Andreas!
Hey. I'm looking at other programs beside synthv which I own. I also purchased the 4 English voices which are OK for my pop songs but I can't find a voice for r&b songs. Something that sounds like Alicia keys or ashanti... basically voices of people of color. Have you come across any voices that could help me out? All of these programs are truly lacking when it comes to different voices.
I'm not aware of one. It would definitely something that would be very popular. The only voice I hear referred to as "black" is Synth V's Asterian, which is obviously not what you're looking for. There is a Synthesizer V male rock voice coming out, Ninezero, that people are excited about. We really do need a lot more voices, and I'm sure we'll get them.
Hey, Reid. I attempted to record the soprano line of a choral arrangement but got a "too complex" error message. Any suggestions? Seems like one has to do it in segments and then put it together afterwards? Seems like too much work. :0)
Even doing it all in MIDI and importing it? That's bad. I would contact Emvoice.
It works better in the DAW than in Dorico, but it seems to be a processing issue to me. Like the servers are overwhelmed for a while. But the error should not happen because Emvoice has automatic "la" syllables to fill in unwritten lyrics. What I've noticed is that there is a limit of 20 notes (of any value) per section. Then that section gets cleared for entering lyrics. But it can get annoying to wait on the plugin.
@@ChaplainAcosta I tried to be honest in the video about Synthesizer V, because there are limitations to Emvoice. It's simply not as powerful as Synth V. I made my choice for convenience, not for which one I thought had the best-sounding voices. And you've found an issue. There may be more, but I believe that if you bring it up to them, they'll try to fix it.
Wow! Thank you! Really really helpful! One of the big problems (for me) with Synth V is that I hear a Japanese inflection to the words -- they are clearly being sung by someone who doesn't have English as a first language. Also, you song wouldn't sound that silly if Kanye sung it -- so maybe invest in the Thomas Vocoder voice after all? 🙂
Some of the special vocal sounds that come with Emvoice are pretty good in that vein, but certainly if you like the way Thomas sounds... there's a sale on now. 😀
@@ReidRosefelt Actually re "The Voices", do they have any other iterations? Shouting, for example? I'm thinking of the vocal range Bowie explored in the last verse of "Heroes". Is there anything that can account for velocity sensitivity? I know there are some excellent orchestral voices that are velocity sensitive. Thanks again!
@@guy_incognito No, there’s nothing like that. No shouting.
I know how this all works I have written the text file that created songs sung by Dectalk which no longer works on windows 10. Do you know why my Cakewalk on windows 10 cannot find the voices?
You either have to play them into the track or compose the MIDI notes on a separate track (so you can hear them), drag the notes into the Emvoice track and click "record."
Thanks for the informative vid. I was teetering on buying this software, but for me, the female voices all sound too jeuvenile for my purposes. I wish I could find similar software with mature-sounding female voices. I wiish the demo version would let us test the voices in lower keys.
Try Synthesizer V. I like the Solaria and Natalie voices. I used Natalie in this video. ruclips.net/video/u0qHfX8V9LE/видео.html
Thanks what is best Em voice or Synthesizer V?
Now that I have tried them both, I have to say I like the sound of Synth V better. But they both have their good points.
Hello Reid,
I thank you for this video tutorial. I just purchased Lucy after toying with the free trial of Emvoice.
I also have Vocaloid and what concerns me about Emvoice is it doesn’t seem to have much in the way of vocal expressions. Mainly, soft whispering (breathiness).
And there aren’t any “dynamics” automation adjustments to pencil in for velocity or loudness.
So, I’m working on a song that is somewhat melancholy and poor “Lucy” sounds robotic. But Emvoice is a starting block for synth vocals and has its possibilities.
I did get a few tips from your video, though. Thanks for those!
Gianni❤
Thanks, Gianni. In the video I did talk about Synthesizer V. You might want to download their free demo. It will give you a taste. If you buy the paid one, I think it might get you a little further to what you're looking for. Even though I did this video and love Emvoice, I have moved on to Synth V.
@@ReidRosefelt Well guess what? I just purchased Synth V Pro! Are you planning any tutorials? I’m pretty excited about learning it. I already have a feel for Vocaloid so it should come quickly once I learn the interface.
Thanks for your reply!
Gianni❤️
@@gianni1646 No, I don't plan on doing that, but there are some tutorials available and there is a user manual. But I found it very easy to learn. Put in the notes and put in the words and you'll be amazed. But then you can play with the phonemes to get more realistic pronunciations, tune the vibrato, and so on. As you learn, the process will go faster, but it's pretty great right out of the box. Getting Solaria really helps. That's the best vocal bank. Good luck!
@@ReidRosefelt Thanks! I’m already working with it - love the realism.
Tell me how Solaria helped, though. I purchased Natalie to get started; didn’t want to spend too much in case I didn’t like the app.
G❤️
@@gianni1646 I used Natalie on this video ruclips.net/video/u0qHfX8V9LE/видео.html and was pretty happy with it, but it took a LOT of work to draw her vibrato. When I got Solaria, I got better results with less effort.
My main problem with emvoice is that there is no tension/loudness control. How do you control how hard the singer sings? If you can't, it will never have anywhere near realistic expression even if it sounded perfect otherwise.
I'm not aware of an expression or loudness control on emvoice. So that means you have to do some careful automation in your DAW. Maybe use software like VocalSynth or Nectar to pull more variation out of the voices, etc. Which leads to the question of... if you are unsatisfied with emvoice as it is, maybe Synth V is better for you. They both have free demos. But I have confidence that the developers of emvoice will keep working to make it better.
Some Cubase problems can in fact be a Windows problem. Try fixing your windows files: c:\windows\system32\sfc /scannow
Thanks for the advice. I also need to get in touch with Steinberg and see if they can help me resolve this, but I'm always too busy with something. This week!
Do I have to buy the voice before it will even work?
No, the voices in the free version work fine. The only difference is a limitation in the number of notes.
Do any of these programs have men's voices? I only see videos with girls voices.
Yes, all of them do. Emvoice has one female and two male voices. You can hear all three in the free demo.
Really useful video for me - thank you. Can only afford Jay or Lucy - flip a coin?
Thanks, Tim. You don't have to flip a coin. 😀Just download the free demo. It has all three voices and features--just limited notes. But personally I bought Lucy first. Enjoy Emvoice One!
I got emvoice but my Cakewalk can't find the voices
Check out my answer to your other question.
You're an awesome teacher
Thank you!
I hear your voice on my right side only, is this on purpose ?
No, the audio is bad. Sorry. I've tried to do better since.
why didnt they get people with better voice/vocal
Obviously they like them. : ) There are a lot of technical challenges doing this. They have four vocalists now with many alternate ways of singing. I'm sure they'll add more. But there is a free demo and you can easily see whether you can get what you want out of Emvoice without spending a penny. And if you're not satisfied, there is always Synth V.
60 minutes and the end i hear the same fake chipmunk 😂
If you're looking for more realism, you might want to explore Synthesizer-V. I'm using it now myself.
Sure, i know it is 1000 years over this!!!
You can’t compare SynthV to Emvoice, SynthV is a lot more advanced than Emvoice in most if not all ways.
I agree. I think you can compare two things without saying or implying they are of equal quality--you can say one does more than the other. I was trying to make that point and I'm sorry you didn't feel I did. And in the case of Emvoice, it still may be a better choice for some people. Personally, I probably will get Synth V someday, while continuing to use Emvoice, just as I use more than one orchestral or guitar or piano library for different things.
I agree. Don't forget there's a free version of Syn V.
emvoice is not convenient. cause It can't ex/im port MIDI DATA.
That's a fair point about importing, but it's easy enough to create a MIDI file and play it into Emvoice, using MIDI listen as I show in the video. Just one button press and the MIDI is in Emvoice. But, you are right, I don't think you can export the MIDI. You can export the Emvoice track and use it for another singer.
@@ReidRosefelt I can't play piano nor detect the correct pitch.
So I just singing a melody into microphone and make the melodyne detect the pitch then export MIDI to Synthsizer V.
This is my style to make a song.
I have the Emvoice but it is useless to people like me!
Synth V is gone and all there is is their dust. You'll never catch em. You made a wrong turn way way back when you decided to use cloud servers for processing. oops
I'm using Synth V now too. ruclips.net/video/u0qHfX8V9LE/видео.html But I still like Emvoice.
A video giving audio advice . . . with badly recorded and noisy narration, that's panned over into one channel leaving the other side silent.
That's fair. It was the first time I used a setup with a new mic feeding directly into the camera rather than into an audio recorder. I got this complaint and started mixing the audio in my videos down to mono. Sorry this was a problem for you.
It is very easy that problems like this happen, if you don´t have some assistance, and principally when you are doing videos for who may complain, and still not good monetized.
blah blah blah...without any examples
