I've had chronic pain from a bilateral laproscopic inguinal hernia surgery for over 7 years. With all due respect, there are a much larger number than 3% of people with chronic pain directly from hernia surgeries, specifically with mesh. Every doctor I've been to, including yourself, has dismissed my pain because the hernia itself has not reoccurred; neglecting the fact that the pain is more debilitating after the surgery. The only recourse that has been suggested is pain pills, opiates and the like.
Outcomes such as mine should be discussed transparently when consulting with patients, and downplaying of this issue is a big part of why people like me continue to live with debilitating pain. You mentioned the mesh used it thinner now; however, teflon mesh is a known to leech into the body and cause massive inflamation. Patients should not have to refer to specialist after specialist when you are claiming to be the specialist on hernias. This is a common issue amongst men with hernia mesh, I hope doctors like you start to take our pain seriously instead of pushing the status quo on the current treatment of hernias. I felt rushed to get the surgery and did not weigh my options, due to your urgent suggestion to operate. Anyone who is considering mesh for their hernia surgery, I would recommend looking into other methods. I would rather have another operation to treat a recurring hernia than deal with the effects of mesh.

Now my left side hurts more and my left ball hurts. Then later it will switch to the other side.

I wish my doctor would give me something for pain. It’s been 8 weeks for me and I can’t stand it the pain is unbearable at times especially when I ride for a trip back home, out of state. They only gave me pain meds the first two weeks then said take Motrin which I am but I’m taking way more of that than I should. It’s sad the pain meds work better and I only had to take that 2 times a day the over the counter is around the clock. I wish I would have never had this done!

@@ВячеславУ-у4мthe pain is a bit of both. It feels like there is something pulling on the mesh downwards and i have random sharp pains in my right testicle, potentially from a trapped nerve. Teflon has pfas and leeches into the body, causing further inflammation. Dr. Chong Xie, who specializes in fascia, is who I would go to first if I could redo my course of action. Regardless of what any "specialist" says, surgery should not be the primary method.

As one of the "3%" who have long term pain I find it offensive how many surgeons just focus on the 97%. It's been almost 2 years for me and I can still feel my hernia site and have daily pain that limits my activity and my life. Only answers I ever get from doctors are "well, unfortunately it looks like you're one of a small minority left with chronic pain" ...that's it, case closed for them. No fixes, just ushered out the door and forgotten, like all the many other "3%".
Wish I'd never had the surgery!

To those who’ve had chronic pain, when did it start after the surgery? have you also developed other "weird" issues or pain, especially affecting your digestive system? Had the surgery in 2017, was okay at first, then all of a sudden or almost, all hell broke loose and I lost my most intimate and trusted home: my body. I’m 23 and feel like I’m already at the end of my life. Would appreciate any insight. I'm still in pain but it's a different pain, and my mindset and environment are also different. I'm at another stage in my life. The pain is more dull than ever but the feeling of having a foreign octopus-like object slowly spreading its tentacles throughout my body from the epicenter of the chronic pain (lower abdomen and groin area) is still there. Some mornings are harder than others. Some moments are full of relief and peace. But the baseline is still a feeling of discomfort and dysfunction that I'm slowly accepting while trying to keep the flame of hope alive. I've had different complications over the years all related to the gastrointestinal tract, and the groin, genital and anal areas. I cope with the pain, the bodily issues, and the resulting depressive state as best as I can. I'm also healing from childhood trauma... (I speculate that the inguinal hernia was a direct result of the chronic abuse and its destruction of my physiological homeostasis, a lot of the chaos in my life seems to stem from that). I've used weed a lot, and it has helped, but I've also abused it, which holds its fair share of negative psychological and physical consequences. I want to dig deeper into my creative, fulfilling, and sustainable endeavors next to shape my environment and my resilience as positively as I can considering the chaos my body easily finds itself in.

I would not believe it's extremely low. I had mesh surgery - not from this dr but a top dr in the field - and I still have pain years later. that being said, it's better than having the hernia. my pain is like cramps or spasms that occur very infrequently but when they do occur it's very painful for a couple minutes at a time. they usually come in episodes of a few times in a row so in total maybe 5 minutes.

Firstly, it's very good of Dr. Harris to respond to so many of the comments below. I think it shows true dedication.
Nevertheless, after reading these nightmare stories of pain and complications post surgery, my apprehensions and logical suspicions about entering and placing a foreign object in that part of the body have been confirmed.
My inguinal hernia of 5 years is medium sized and causes me very little pain. I do hear gastric juices flowing through that area and it's a bit squishy when I speak loudly or strain.
However, after reading the comments, I feel like it might be best to leave the hernia alone and perhaps use a hernia belt going forward?
I know there is the risk of strangulation. But to have nerves messed with and a mesh implanted in that delicate reproductive area (vas deferens, testicles, muscles and nerves connected to sexual functioning), feels frightening to me now.
Isn't there a way to just lightly stitch the hole Or use dissolving pig mesh to let my own tissues close up the hole? I know recurrence is a concern, but having the hole closed just a bit and working on strengthening that area, being more careful going forward seems like a better option?
Would any of the commentators below experiencing terrible post surgery pain, have opted against surgery if they had known what they know now?

    • @CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists
      @CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists  8 месяцев назад

Some surgeons offer non-mesh repair with the understanding that recurrence rates are higher than with a mesh repair.

My husband has had two hernia surgeries and a nerve block surgery. And the doctor cut two of the three nerves. We are now in the 4th of his chronic pain and it is affecting his life tremendously. We are finding out now that there should be nerve screenings prior to and during surgery that would be very helpful for the doctor and the patient to help prevent or minimize the pain after hernia surgery. The nerves near the groin area in both men and women can get caught in sutures and the mesh itself. I have scoured RUclips and watched dozens of hernia videos, and nobody discusses this nerve component being part of the pain. I came across a video where doctor from Baltimore was talking about the nerves in the groin area, having to be addressed and eliminating the chronic pain from its patients. although you consider yourself a hernia specialist. It would benefit you to continue hernia pain education and furthering your education in correctly helping your patients with their chronic pain.

Mesh degrades with time, and causes all sorts of problems long after the operation itself. Do your research, and if possible go the mesh free route. They say only 1-3% have chronic pain, when studies have shown its closer to 15%. They probably don't think it's significant, but when you are the one shuffling around with a walking stick, its very significant!

I had hernia repair in my left groin area last year in December 2023. Pain just ended today after 6 months. I was taking constant pain killers and was about to go to a pain clinic to block nerves. A new method is that they are freezing the nerves that would last for 1.5 years approx. I am still lucky as it seems pain finally subsided. For those of you who still suffer, maybe nerve blocking can be the solution. Not permanent because that might end up being worse. Freezing the nerves for a longer time might actually calm them so that the pain will not come back.

wesley john clarke I’ve got that too. I had bilateral femeral and inguinal hernias. I had them repaired with mesh. I got staph. I ended up in hospital for 6 weeks with septicaemia. Also, they’d stitch the nerve in my groin, on the left side, into the scar. So, they opened me up again, removed the nerve and put more mesh in. I’m now in pain daily. I had a hole the size of a baseball on the right side from the staph and the hernia has returned on the right. When they cut my nerve.....it has left the side numb, but I get a massive jolting pain, burning and itching. It’s horrific. They want to fix me again........I’ve told them not in a million years. It’s not common for a woman to have what I had, they were quite puzzled as to why I’d have these hernias. I’m not overweight. I’m fit......but I did lift weights years ago. So, I must have lifted more than I should have. But, this mesh....is horrible. It’s lumpy and bumpy and I feel it. Hope you and your friend are well otherwise. 👍🏻

My doctor was very dismissive about my pain and constant daily vomiting. The Gastroparesis has gotten very bad, and 7 of my hernias have returned due to the constant vomiting. I spend about 85 percent of the day laying still in my bed so I don’t hurt so bad. Leaving the house is out of the question except for doctor appointments. I do not blame my doctor, as I am morbidly obese, for the complications in surgery. I do hold him responsible for not trying harder to see what happened. It took a year and a half to get diagnosed with Gastroparesis. I’ve lost 73 pounds since, and have been told I need to lose about 75 more to consider hernia surgery again. So I am just kind of stuck. I hope my story helps someone.

Zubair, pain a year after surgery would constitute chronic pain. In these cases, having a nerve block performed by a pain specialist can often help reduce pain symptoms, and often can eventually eliminate them. Obviously without seeing a physician, this would be difficult to treat. We wish you and your father the best.

Dr and nurses must not take my pain seriously as the 5-325 pain meds might as well toss in trash
I mean 10 pills for 8 days isn't even taking the pain level down a notch. Told them when I was in the doctors for extrem pain my level was 7-8 but told them that it gets much worse at night 10 being the worst pain I have ever had I've broken arm and leg before and this is way worse keep catching my self breathing shallow and have high pitch ringing in my head the heath care in this country is worse than other countries and they have free heath care. I’m now 22 years old been to several doctors over the years for this with 0 solutions (not blaming them, it’s my stupid body). I had a right inguinal hernia mesh repair surgery around 2008, no problems at all until around 2017. I get recurrent pain in both testicles and usually pain a little higher where they did the surgery. Anytime I feel this pain and bend over or squat I feel an unstable feeling where the repair occurred like I’m going to get another hernia. This pain lasts for days, or many weeks at a time, then goes away, and comes right back. I do not exercise anymore because of the unstable feeling like my intestines are about to push right through where they placed the mesh. I loved to exercise lift weights and run, I can ignore the pain and unstable feeling if I knew it wouldn’t cause another hernia. I really don’t know what to do anymore, what’s the point

However, a few days ago, I started experiencing discomfort in the lower side of my abdomen. It feels like a burning sensation and pulling, rather than sharp pain. The discomfort is intermittent, but I've noticed it is more pronounced when I am seated with my body inclined forward or when I am in the "fetal position." Any feedback you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I had 2 operations for the same inguinal hernia, the 1st time they installed the mesh after 2 months I had extreme chronic pain and suffered 8 months with this pain. Then after a year the surgeon went back in and took it out and closed it without a mesh, now I'm suffering a extremely chronic pain from scar tissue..Currently I'm looking for a pain management doctor to help me manage my pain. This is what the surgeon suggested to me because he said there was nothing he can do. He said it would be worse if he went in for third time. What do you suggest?

Hank, I'm sorry to hear about your difficult post operative course.
Having pain 2 months after your initial surgery is extremely rare, and
I'm not sure we would characterize that as 'chronic' pain so quickly.
Regardless, having the mesh removed sounded like the best next step. I
think your surgeon is correct, having a pain specialist evaluate your
case and possibly offer some pain and steroid injections might be just
what is needed to get you back to normal.
      Best,

I had laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia repair with mesh 5 weeks ago. A couple of months prior to surgery I gradually developed left side anteriolateral hip pain with hip flexion (and this was the smaller of the hernias). This does not seem to be improving (or improving almost imperceptibly). X-ray shows modest OA, and indomethacin (50 mg) usually relieves about 80%+ of this. He had been getting shots for pain in his stomach to find the nerve that might have been damaged. They have suggested giving him shots in the testes, removing one of his testes. He’s returned to the surgeon, he told my son to go to his regular doctor. The regular doctor sent him to the pain doctor, then to a neurologist, then to a urologist. Where is the chronic pain typically located?? I haven’t been able to eat and have lost 20 pounds since 2 weeks after hernia surgery. I am currently 12 weeks out of surgery. Every time I eat I have excruciating pain. I have had an edoscopy and CT. No ulcers or problems on the endoscopy but the CT show a small reoccurance of the hernia with the mesh not in the correct place. My surgeon refuses to do anything I want the mesh out of me!

I had an umbilical hernia surgery 4 years ago with Mesh put in. My life has never been the same. After the surgery I knew something wasn't right as I was in so much pain, and the doctor was in Haiti training surgeons , and the nurses said " it's only you, and there's no reason you should need more pain killers and aren't able to work and lift more than 10 pounds" They treated me like such garbage, I called back again with urinary frequency like 50 times a night, and intense bladder pain. They told me "it can't be the surgery" and to go to urologist.(didn't go to follow up app, because of the mis treatment). Went to the urologist, and they kept/keep on mis diagnosing me with chronic bacterial Prostatitis. I knew this was wrong as you will have a fever, and I have/had no fever with no evidence of bacteria in ALL tests. They kept on pushing 6 week cycles of Doxi, which i refused because, I did research and saw 95% of the time males get misdiagnosed with this, when in fact they have non bacterial Prostatitis better known and properly named CPPS Chronic pelivic pain syndrome. I bought this book written by a specialist "headache in the pelvis" by doctor Wise, and knew after 10 pages of reading this is exactly what I have. Sheer Hell! the only thing that takes off the edge is 12 diazepams a month to relax the pelvic floor muscles. I had a lot of potential in my life being fit, active, and successful in my job. Now at I have a desk job and feel my days are limited both mentally and physically I can't take this pain anymore, I lost my sex drive, and my life it seems. Please! Any help would/could save my life! best regards, Ryan

I had a sports hernia repaired using the heavier mesh in 2010. Got most of it removed 8 months ago and going back in to get the rest removed very soon. The foreign body reaction was unbearable since day 1. The pathologist gave me the results right away. My pelvis is ruined. I used to run a mile in 5 minutes (that's fast) and now it hurts to even walk or sit. Mesh isn't necessary for every hernia or core muscle injury to the pelvis and if possible should be avoided entirely.

@@majidkashani4257 you aren't far enough out yet. My feeling never got better. In 6wks you'll have a better answer. But in my opinion it doesn't matter. Mesh is mesh. You cannot put something like that in the body and expect it to look the same years down the road. It will harden, shrink, and degrade over time. It relies on your body to react to it via inflammation to build scar tissue to reinforce and strengthen it. It works perfectly like that, but the problem is it's not good for the body at all. It causes horrible pain and a whole bunch of other systemic problems (cognitive decline, anxiety hair loss, nausea etc). It all depends on the coating used on the mesh product. It isn't tested nor backed by any science to say it's safe. This is why many surgeons are switching to bio mesh instead of synthetic mesh. It's more tolerable. But even that has problems as nerves grow through the mesh like grape vines and become entrapped. Getting it removed can cause even more permanent damage if you do not choose your surgeon wisely. Not all mesh can be removed. Some of it is left on my femoral artery and doctors won't touch it. Mesh needs to be banned.

Before he left, he told me to take 800 mgs of Advil every 4 to 6 hours as needed, and that was pretty much the jist of it. Now, the surgeon that jas taken his place, has told me he doesnt see a reccurance. And its prob just nerve pain. He told me to tell my PCP, and see if she'd put me on gabapentine. I started taking that a month ago. It has not helped either. Im also having acid reflux, left side pain, as well as pain where the surgery site is. The gastro doctor is telling me it appears I have diverticulitis and distal colitis. But I dont really know what is going on with my abdomen. I just know it doesnt feel right. I had double inguinal hernia surgery ten years ago. The doctor admitted to having "possibly done some nerve damage" on the right hernia site. Due to the agonizing pain I was feeling I was immobile for a week and ultimately developed pulmonary embolism; which put me in the hospital for nine days.
Fast-forward ten years and I've begun to feel pain in my left hernia site. It comes and goes, but when it's present it stops me on my tracks. I cannot walk or do much else.
The pain varies between a deep, SHARP pain that feels as if I can feel the edges of the mesh, and a dull pain that is easily pinpointed, right below the hernia surgery scar.
For what it's worth, the pain began the day after I did a couple of abdominal exercises. Exercises I've done many times over the past ten years without any issues. I wonder if the exercises did anything to the mesh.

    1. Which hernias statistically have more chronic pain associated with them?
    2. If my hernia is above the belly button is that umbilical hernia?
    3. It's gotten bigger over the year and can feel hard when standing but when I lay down I can still feel it but it's soft and possibly goes in. What might be the cause of the hardness and is it possibly just fat or does that mean intestine?

Anais, the breathing tube exercise is usually reserved for patients who are going to be bed ridden for several days and won't be expanding their lungs completely on their own. We don't suggest the use of this after our hernia surgeries because most of our patients are walking and even driving within 1-2 days.

@@lc2453 i passed a full month yesterday.so far all good.no extreme pain.some lite discomford i can say.i can do some exercises and walk ok but i still can't run like i used to and i can't ride my bike yet.i did my sergury on a public hospital so it's not that i have a doctor to talk about how or what i feal.for instance i'm still totaly numb on my uper thy and the right side of my pubic area.from what i found on the net they must have done a neurectomy.that is probably why i don't feal pain.but a the right side and aproximatly two cm over the insition i have developed some kind of a hard kind of a tube.like scar tissue it feals.i starts there and goes verticly up and alongside the abdominals and then it fades inside when the ribs start..the doc said it's the mesh or it's from the mesh.i didn't actually understand what he is saying i must say....he said that is going to go soft over time...i hope that goes ok....if u want to ask anything i'm here
