Just a question. Do you need another shed as you can use the existing shed as a tool shed as you now have your summer house to relax in and set up with your tea making stuff etc. Save your money for something else
Good to see you on the homestead Sean… I’m glad you have a blackboard for daily/weekly lists of jobs, I have one too and I find it quite motivating. for example, whatever is on the list I like to get done before I leave or add it to the next days list if I can’t . I completely agree with others suggesting that Summer house could be the tea shed and relaxing area. I wonder if the covering of the roofs and putting the glass in existing buildings are a priority while it’s mild. To get them all watertight. Finish a job before starting another. This is what I would put mind energy into. You could then also use summerhouse temporarily to grow cool weather seedlings while you put up your greenhouse so you don’t have to rush this. Also on a gloomy day you could design your plot on something like veg plotter. I have had a months trial in the past designed my plot printed it out and then ended the trial. It just helps to get a visual of where you want all of the buildings and paths, to be in front which should be a etc all to scale more or less. What do you think?
Hi I think you should get you pal from London back down to get your greenhouse up and then you can start planting seeds be easier with 2. I’m not sure if you need all these shed I’m sure you will be able to still have tools in your shed their now you are making a lot of work for yourself
Sean, you could use the cardboard in the cold frame to get a colony of worms going, especially as the cardboard looks quite damp. Take all the staples out and remove all cellophane, then start putting the stacked cardboard in a quiet corner. The worms will find it and reduce it to lovely worm compost which you could then mix a small proportion, say 25% by volume, into your potting compost. This will get your seeds off to a flying start 🌸
I use cardboard in my beds wherever open space encourages weeds. I am trying not to have too much open space, but cardboard is free, draws worms and can easily be covered with mulch. Great idea.
@@maureenmckenna5220 I too use a lot of cardboard as a weed barrier and the benefit is that it also feeds the worms. I find the best cardboard is Bicycle packaging, because it doesn’t have much printing ink on it, it’s lovely and thick and is large, so you don’t have lots of overlaps when you put it on your beds.just take the sellotape and staples off. You can get a staple remover that makes the job easier. They are small and like a 2 pronged fork and very cheap, but makes the task easier Did i mention that i do No Dig 😄 I hope everyone has a great growing season in 2025 👍🌸
@ I save all my Amazon packages and some from family over the winter. Did no dig for a 30 foot (10 meters) by 10 foot (2 meters) area about 10 years ago. Worked great. A thriving beautiful bed now. I don’t have staples in packing material but the cello tape is a pain to get off and in the ground. We need something biodegradable. Enjoy your own garden in 2025. As an 81 year old, I can honestly say it keeps me going and has done so over the course of these many years.
@@maureenmckenna5220 I’m 76, female and have a full size allotment, used to be called 10 rods, but it’s gone metric now, so no idea 😂 Lovely to be out in the fresh air and eating unadulterated home grown food - Freedom 🎉💐🌟
You have huge experience in the garden. I expect you could write a lovely book. You have this beautiful piece of land, with a gurgling stream, for heaven sake, and all your planning time, will result in something gorgeous. I need to see it on paper, personally, but as you explain, I can’t wait to see it all evolve. And, just an aside, the later you can wait to eat in the morning, the better. Sometimes this results in two meals, not three. A nice cuppa in between helps.
Hello Sean! Have you ever done winter sowing? It gets you a head start on your plants. RUclips has lots of ideas. We are going to plant some flowers and veggies hopefully this week.
The earth still is frozen here, it’s nice to see you out doing something, thanks for letting me garden vicariously. I can start my tomatoes and peppers inside next month 🎉
you have a waterfront view, keep it clear of rubbish, you could screen off the back corner behind the shed you are going to build and move your pond further along, so your plot looks tidy it is good to have an out of sight area🙂
Thats a great idea...The cold frame is 3/4 done. It could be enough to start several trays of crops. There is probably enough scrap lumber to make 2 frames for the top.....cover the frames with plastic. A layer on both sides of the frame to make an air pocket...and secure them so they don't blow off... you could be planting the next day...and it's easier and faster than building the green house right now.......the cardboard could be flattened and be the first layer in the bottom. For insulation...sprinkle some Epsom salt on the top of cardboard... the slugs dont like it...then the other scrap lumber layed down inside to set trays on.maybe a piece of your black plastic over the wood to heat up with the sun... And your ready, steady, plant, the next day...doing it inside.with a cup of tea, in your shed . ❤ Thanks Sean.
Morning all. Two fitted planks of wood and plastic french doors should do it for the cold frame. Fit it like a car bonnet to keep open for ventilation, the dump or shop for new windows should have old ones and the keys so you can lock it.
Morning Sean, interesting ideas have you sketched a plan yet? I like your idea of a shed with a walkway/veranda so you can have different views around the Homestead, especially down that end of the plot.Glad it's 'warming'up lol. It has been feeling very cold. We've been lucky here, no snow but hard frosts👍. Keep warm and your ideas coming too.🤗
Evening Sean I know how you felt on Sunday, I thought exactly the same as i woke up on Saturday morning with a sore throat, cough and runny nose 🤒🤧 So I spent Sunday in my big fluffy dressing gown and PJ's, binge watching Great Coastal Railway Journey's with Michael Portillo! so it was good to take the pedal from the metal and chill out for a change 😂 Are you still going to build a composting toilet,as you never mentioned it in this video as you have previously in others. I Would hate to think of you getting 'caught short' 😮 Take care Sean 💜
It is good to stand in The Rusty Homestead and think about things, and how they are going to work. Being in the physical space really helps me, as I am a visual person. Ideas change too, and there is no harm in that. Like the flowers, ideas grow from a seed, and flourish into something beautiful in the end! I hope you can enjoy the process, as it is exciting to think how it will all turn out in the end?! Sadly, my little front garden has a rat infestation (we live near a river) and they have made a nest in my storage container, as they were after the compost bags in there, the rat man said! So I am going to have a big clear out of my garden, as I do not want them back again. Blessings from West Devon, England, and Jilly & Madge xxx
I like the glass cloche in the background...would love to have some real glass ones but settling, for now, on plastic ones from Dollar Tree. If I had this space, I would have placed my shed so that one of the sides would be up against the brick cold frame walls...that is, depending on the overall arrangement of the area. Very hard to know these things without actually standing on the property. At any rate, I'm enjoying watching the development of the space. Sean can see things that we can't.
Sean ,you said in a previous video that you was getting a nail gun to finish the trim off for the summer house ?.Are you putting that on hold for the moment.
Why don't you move the summerhouse to where the shed is? That way it will save you some money from buying something else. As always another good vlog 😊
Great video. I'm envious of your violas. I cannot grow them in my garden because they get eaten by snails. The only way I can have violas or pansies flowering is in the Summer when I have a tablecloth hanging over the table. The snails cant get around the cover so the plants remain safe. Looking forward to the next video. Cheers!
Hi , just to let you know 5 planets are in line this January and in Feb 7 planets will be in a straight line. Whatever that means ha ha - but definitely Unusual
Hi Sean, it's good to plan and I hope it all comes together for you. It will be interesting to see how it is transformed in the end! 🙂 The frost has gone for us in Norfolk now for the last two days, seemed odd not to have it. Take care and catch up soon.
Yes good idea you could have your porch / veranda looking out on to your pond and waterfall 😊 another thought you don't really need a window in your tool shed you could pinch that for your main shed? What do you think?
It would be lovely later on, when all the expensive stuff is done, to get old wood and replace the corrigated iron fence with a wooden one. You are really building something beautiful there , it's like having your own small Kingdom
Hi Sean, I can't believe it. Literally seconds before you said it, I'd named the original shed, The Cabin! Somewhere to have a beautiful cuppa tea 🍵 and a snooze 😴. A chill out zone all cosy and the like ❤😊 The cosy cabin xxx

Yes it's a perfect coldframe...
My dad had a cold frame like that. He used two old glazed doors on the top.

It's good to formulate a solid plan to proceed with. That shed will need some kind of metal tie downs for the roof so it doesn't blow off. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦

Could you use the cardboard for sheet mulch?

Windows can sometimes be free if someone is remodeling.
Sounds a good plan . It would be great to get some planting in that cold frame …which I love, a real bit of garden history .

It has started to thaw here. It has been that cold, everyone has been exhausted😊
I loved seeing the little garden outside your kitchen window again. It will look so cheerful when those pansies bloom.
Hi Sean what are you going to use your Summer house for, thought it was for sitting and drinking your tea 🤔
Tea drinking and guests.
Hoping the temperature rises we are having a new roof on tomorrow which will take a few days to do. Still got snow and ice here in South Yorks x
We still have snow on the ground here in mid Wales. I'm glad to see you enjoying yourself at the homestead.

Yes, plan was in an earlier video.
Sorry Sean, my memory is like the sieve . I shall have a quick look through.

I like the mirrors for gardens that look like a door , it would look nice at the end of your passage near your back door

I’ve had it for around 20 years, can’t remember where I purchased it.
Hope it gets warmer for us all and you can get going with it all Sean..
Sean, why are you planing on having so many flower beds, nice as they are, I thiught the idea was to grow all the veggies you need for yourself.
Flowers are only 20% of the garden and we need them to attract bees for the vegetables and fruit.
Sean ,you said in a previous video that you was getting a nail gun to finish the trim off for the summer house ?.Are you putting that on hold for the moment.
No, still on the list.
I thought the summer house was the place you were going to sit with your cup of tea?🤔😊
That and guests.
Why don't you move the summerhouse to where the shed is? That way it will save you some money from buying something else. As always another good vlog 😊
No sun that end and I’m not buying anything, making from scraps.
The shed should be 12 foot by 10 foot and 7 foot 6 inches high.
It's nice to see you have days like that too. I think we mustn't beat ourselves up about it and say blow it im not in the mood 😊
Great video. I'm envious of your violas. I cannot grow them in my garden because they get eaten by snails. I don't know if it is the angle of the camera or not, but it looks like the shed is starting to lean toward the river?
Didn’t have the tripod so the camera is sat on a brick so isn’t level. The shed is on a concrete base.
I think it's just the camera angle, if it was leaning the door wouldn't fit and the lock wouldn't line up.
I'm sure it's ok.
Why don’t you approach The Men’s Shed if you have one in your town with the measurements and they can make a top for it with 2 nd hand windows .
The growing season would be over by the time they would finished - that’s what they told me.
Have you been doing anything interesting with the first full moon of the year?

Why move a shed
I explained that in the video.
I enjoy your channel. In Ohio, it's frozen solid.
Love your mellow day… so important that we enjoy a more relaxed time regularly 😊
Hi Sean love your videos, quick question is your live cam up and running
It is run by solar so your guess is as good as mine if the sunshine will ever return.
Sounds like you are moving to the homestead ...you won't want to leave 😊
It would be lovely later on, when all the expensive stuff is done, to get old wood and replace the corrigated iron fence with a wooden one. You are really building something beautiful there , it's like having your own small Kingdom

Shwmae Sean……
What happened to your original allotment on the side of the hill ?.
Apologies if you’ve already mentioned this in a previous ep.
This homestead is close to Sean's home. He gave the old allotment back
I gave it up back in May 2024 for this one on flatter land and closer to home.
