      Ukraine cannot defeat Russia now, but victory by 2025 is possible with increased Western support, according to retired British General Richard Barrons, who previously commanded the Kingdom's Joint Forces.
      "The current Ukrainian counter-offensive will not dislodge Russia - although no one expected it. It is also unlikely to halve the area of occupation before the onset of winter, which could be one of the most optimistic goals," Barrons writes in a column for the Financial Times.
      He calls the progress of the AFU in the south "modest" and writes that it is about eight miles (12 kilometers). Before reaching the sea, there was still 55 miles (88 kilometers) left to go through three lines of defense (here, probably, the general indicated the path in a straight line to the nearest point on the Sea of Azov).

      The one thing he claims is probably not so correct, which is that the F-16s will be a game changer. Any of the knowledgeable military experts who specialize in air combat are warning against believing that they will be the golden ticket to Ukrainian victory. Several factors at play, first being it is highly contested airspace bristling with MANPADs and SAM systems, not to mention hostile aircraft so it is still a very high-risk environment. Also, the F-16 requires a well maintained runway as the air scoop is below the fuselage which means that rough runways that some aircraft can accommodate are not possible with the F-16, and the runways *must* be kept clean or the engine will Hoover up debris and be destroyed. The airfields where those will potentially be stationed will already have targeting information loaded into Russian missiles. I’m very happy that Ukraine will be equipped with them, but they won’t break things open, their main role will be to provide good support for ground forces, with occasional long range strikes at very high value targets when the risk/reward is favourable.
      I recommend watching the Ward Carrol channel, especially his interviews with Justin Bronk who is an internationally renowned expert on modern warfare and weapons systems, the clarity and sobriety of his evaluations are really well worth spending time listening to.

For example, you wouldn't want to get too close to Russia's air defences, cos they'll detect the jet easily. After that war is over Ukraine needs to work out a way to buy some F-35s.

He is, in the time available, without using jargon or devolving into historical cliches and hyperbolic language, as so many military men of a certain age (particularly British military men) are wont to do, make understood to the layman the broader strokes of a complex situation.
      Think about it. How are you qualified to judge his expertise in logistics and strategy? But he sure made you feel like an expert, even for a moment. @@chrisratboy479You missed the point. Yes, they're using western equipment. But they have accumulated invaluable experience using it against a near-peer enemy.
      Western armies haven't fought against a near-peer enemy for several decades.
      So the Ukrainians will definitely have something to teach us after the war. Just like the general said at the end of the video.

      They know that the Motherland has been attacked by a western armed and funded force, that the west is not interested in peace, that NATO is bent on their destruction, on breaking Russia up into puppet states and looting their resources. That is the US Neocon plan, to then allow them to turn on China. The Russians will never allow that to happen, if they have to fight to the last man. Russia has survived for more than 1,000 years, NATO isn't going to beat them.

    There have been many comments that the increased use of drones in this war have rendered the tanks especially the Leopards more vulnerable. Would be interesting to hear Nicholas' take on this.

    • @rogerphelps9939
      @rogerphelps9939 Год назад +1

      Actually it is the Russian tanks that are more vulnerable. They have a habit of launching their turrets into space when hit. It was mentioned in the interview that no Ukrainian soldier has been killed when riding in a Leopard tank.

    • @RawandCookedVegan
      @RawandCookedVegan Год назад +1

      @@rogerphelps9939I did hear that, I found that interesting. There seems to be some kind of idea among armchair soldiers that the Leopard's armor on top is vulnerable. But you make a great point. And it does seem generally that the Russian tanks and equipment have not been anything near the threat many thought they would be.

    • @MajorZero508
      @MajorZero508 Год назад +2

      Any armored vehicle is vulnerable from a top down strike. No one ever said that tanks would not be lost. This is war, and losses are inevitable.
      However western tank design philosophy is different from Russia's. The west values the people who man and operate their equipment. There is a substantial investment in their training and experience. Therefore, the preservation of the crews is incredibly important. The equipment is expendable, the life and experience is not.
      On the other hand, Russia doesn't care a wit about their troops. Their quantity over quality theory is therefore proven false. Russia's equipment is trash, and their training is nonexistent. Their leadership is a joke. Russia will lose this war. That much is obvious. The question is, how badly are they willing to lose?
      Once Ukraine reaches the Sea of Asov, they will bring down the entire Kerch bridge, or at least very large sections of it. At that point, all the Russians in Crimea will be trapped with no route of escape. Ukraine will then cross the Dnipra River into the area to the west of Zaporisia and clear out the Russians all the way to the Crimean ismus crossing points, and pound them into submission.

    Thank you for confirming that the cluster munitions can clear minefields. It had occurred to me that they could do that, but nobody was talking about it, so I thought maybe I just didn't know what I was talking about. Which I don't, but it's nice to know I guessed right. That combined with the fact that they have also been cutting those cluster rounds apart and extracting the bomblets to use with quadcopters is very encouraging. Those munitions are banned in many nations for a reason, so it's a very good thing that Ukraine is getting some alternate uses out of them besides their primary function for which they have received bans.
