A Very impressive performance of these very challenging Op. 25 Chopin Etudes. Her mastery of phrasing ,singing tone and great technical skills prove her to be a brilliant artist of the highest caliber. Brava!!
According to Adele Marcus, Josef Hofmann used to say, "By the left hand, you know them", indicating that he, too, valued the skill of playing each hand separately.
In 1979 I was fortunate enough to have sat about 10 feet away as Ruth Slenczynska performed all of Chopin Opus 10 and 25. There were about 120 people in the room. I was studying piano performance at the time and was very familiar with the Etudes. I did not hear a hiccup that I can recall.
Music critics used to examine the piano after a Ruth Slenczynska performance hoping to find some trickery. They simply could not believe or accept that such a tiny young girl could produce the sound she did. Some called her the greatest child prodigy since Mozart.
I loved to listen to this. It is very pure and clear with a lot of singing. And I have heard most of the recordings of these etudes. And play some of them myself. ❤️
Absolutely wonderful! One of the best Op. 25 I have heard. Brilliant and technically secure, beautiful sound, sensitive and artistic phrasing and pedaling. A most satisfying performance! Excellent-sounding piano and well recorded, too!
Her story is quite sad.In her autobiography she tells how her father made her practice 9 hours every day. His tolerance for faults or weaknesses was nonexistent and he punished her for the least wrong note with a beating . At 15 she suffered a mental breakdown and put an end to her career.
@@nycimpresario Yes, she was born in 1925. If this recording is from 1958 she was then around 33 years old and the photos in this video are misleading. LOL
Absolutely incredible technique. What I miss here is a singing line when there is a melody woven in the faster surface motion, or more characteristic rubato. Sometimes I hear it (especially when it's an inner voice and in the left hand), but considering the greats whom she studied with, I would have expected more of the legato. Still, I very much enjoy listening to her playing, and am blown away by her skill. That winter wind really flies!
@Martin Baldwin-Edwards what is real chopin?... i prefer this playing instead of empty headed ashkenazy richter sokolov and many many others... richter in Londen with the etudes is for me the biggest disaster ever...
I really like her playing, but these Etudes are interpreted all out of shape. The wild changing of tempi within each piece is annoying, but she does play them well. I prefer a more focused approach.
Возможно, вы правы. Но есть и романтическая трактовка жанра этюд, когда это не только техническое упражнение, но и воплощение художественного образа. Если слушать с этой точки зрения, то никакого раздражения нет😊
How sad that her "nutcase" father basically destroyed her career! With this kind of beginning of a career, it is impossible to get over an abusive parent's influence with an art that is so based upon emotion! With this deep-seated influence, I think that Ruth could not get the image of her father out of her mind when it came to such an emotional experience as playing the piano. It is no longer Chopin, Schumann, or Beethoven, and doing it their way. It is her negative father forcing her to perform his way!
Gorgeous playing. Full of charm, drama, polish and musicality. Rock solid pianistically.

Brava!!
When I was a graduate student of this amazing teacher, she could play (memorized) the LH alone of any Chopin Etude
According to Adele Marcus, Josef Hofmann used to say, "By the left hand, you know them", indicating that he, too, valued the skill of playing each hand separately.
im glad she could also play the left hand, since she was able to play the etudes :lul:
Playing the left hand as an expertise? B*llshit... 2 hands are one...

25 #1 blew me away. I so loved it. The tempo's are wonderfully moderate as you can cleanly hear every note. Phrasing, pedalling all so satisfying.

She's AMAZING!
It is a pity of the brutality that helped make her such a prodigy. Her father used to hit her if she struck a wrong note. Too extreme. for my tastes.
Exquisite.
No other word works quite-as-well when listening to Madame Ruth.
Divine,
Is a close second.
What a discovery ! Really ?? Definitely she needs way more recognition... First ligue of pianists! Thank you for uploading:)
She never ceases to amaze us, and, as always, the heart-felt musicality and big, luscious tone before technicality. Brava, brava, brava!!
I read her book as a teenager. Never heard her until now
and have ordered a newly issued set of cds. Wonderful. Thank you.
Fine talent and classic flair. Bravo!! Viva!!! Wunderbar!!! Magnifique!!

SHE IS A FANTASTIC PIANIST !!!!!!
Super wykonanie. Chopin would be impressed!

This seems to indicate age 33 or so - is that right? It's so good to my ears - it puts me at ease.
She is 96 now.

A lovely, lovely set.
Thanks a lot for incredible impressions!

Indeed beautiful❤️
As a child, she studied with Rachmaninoff for a while.
Probably a bit of myth in that. There's little to no evidence that R took any pupils.
@@jeremyd1021 She said so herself publicly.
Uma Pianistaça !
Winter Wind is a bit of a mess up, a lot of struggling going on there, but, who am I?... etc
..inarrivabile ..ho alcune sue esecuzioni in vinile...
Niemand speelt de Etudes als Zij die een engel van God is
Haar opus 25 nummer 1 is van een ongekende schoonheid

Chill, she plays there amazing stuff at 30+ years old after those crisis.
Those are just photo from her childhood.
