The thing is Sega came to Brazil through a partnership with Tectoy. Meanwhile it was difficult and very expensive to get a Nintendo console. Those were very tough days for the Brazilian economy and the importation of products was even more restricted.

I recall chipped PS1's being incredibly common in Brazil, at least in the rural areas like where I'm from. It was to the point where pretty much anyone you met who had a PS1 had it chipped. As a child, it didn't even register in our brains that we were doing something wrong. It was either get your PS1 chipped or you can't play games, pretty much. At least once a week, they would set up a street market, where you could get all sorts of food, maybe have some snacks, and of course, there would be the guys who sold PS1 games. For R$5,00 a pop, can you believe it! I remember when the PS2 got popular in Brazil and the guys came to the street market selling those for R$10,00 a pop, and we complained about it but they told us "Oh, that's because these are on DVD, that's more expensive than CD", and we were like "Well, that makes sense I guess".

Great research, Lady Decade ! That's correct, Sega Saturn was great, but was totally crushed by PS1 and PS2 here in Brazil, mostly by the main point you highlighted: piracy and modchips. Everything here for us was always expensive, as opposed to the USA, where everything was always so cheap or at least very affordable. NES and SNES also had great marketshare and were as popular as MasterSystem and MegaDrive/Genesis, due also to piracy. There were loyal Nintendo fans and Sega fans, but almost everybody played like 40%-60% and 60%-40% of both system, even if they owned just one of the brands.

Hello! Excellent video! Speaking as a Brazilian who lived at that time, one of the factors that was very favorable to the PlayStation brand was the name Sony. At the time, for many Brazilians, one of the things that balanced the price was the guarantee of durability. The Tectoy brand was very strong in the country, but the Sony brand was much more popular. I know a lot of people who convinced their father to buy the console by saying it was a Sony video game.

This video took me back with the mention of the Zillion pistol. That was a lot of fun. Now, the main reason that Saturn failed in Brazil was because of piracy. It was easy to find PlayStation games on the black market whereas for Sega Saturn it was nearly impossible. The game industry in Brazil grew thanks to fake games made in Paraguay. If game developers could lower the prices of games and consoles. They would sell so much more and kick out the pirates from South America.

As a matter of fact, PS1 and piracy devastated both Saturn and N64 in Brazil not to mention many other reasons that made Sony win the 32/64 bit consoles war. Each PS1 pirate game costed about US$2,00 or so, it was an unfair fight. Still, both Mega Drive and Sega Dreamcast live on in my Brazilian heart. 💚💛

I'm Brazilian, I could own a Master System and Mega Drive and even a Dreamcast but I had never get my hands on a saturn, they were much expensive and like lady decade said, no piracy, the price of Videogames and games were always expensive in Brazil, like even today we have to make a sacrifice to own the latest console and we can only afford one game per month with a big sacrifice on the wallet, only piracy saves Brazilian video-game market, without piracy videogames aren't worth the effort

I was lucky enough to have owned both the Saturn and PS1 back then, I was a major Sega fan as most Brazilians and wanted the Saturn, but switched to the PS1 years laters because of the cheap bootleg PS1 games. Nowadays I find the Saturn's library much more interesting but back then I had no clue about all the awesome Japan exclusive games.

The Saturn have a short and tough live here in Brazil, because almost everyone consumes bootleg games during the 90's/2000's, because it was more cheap and very easy to find those type of games. The PS1 came here via people who imports the console from Argentina and Paraguay, grabbing the console on theses countries and resell in Brazil, already modded to read bootlegs and already transcoded to PAL-M. Even Tectoy wasnt competitive enough to hold the market in front of playstation. My dad had a video game rental house during this period, where the people can pay to play a game for a certain period of time, and basically all disc-based games he had are bootlegs. He had some official super nintendo cartridges, but also many bootlegs as well. The Dreamcast have some success here during the 2000s, untill the PS2 came the same way the PS1 before him and dominates the market once again

3:01 I have no idea what the hell you tried to pronounce 😆
One of the more interesting aspects of the late 80s' Brazilian game market is that we had several famiclones. Nintendo allegedly refused to enter the market because the stuff being produced here was better than either the NES or the Famicom. TecToy wasn't among the famiclone producers and used that as leverage to get the rights to sell the Master System: "Other companies will treat the console as just another product. With us, it will be *the* console." - It really paid off for them.

well, Nintendo doesn't care about our country, increasing the price more and more nowadays, but at the time we had a lot of fun with rock n roll racing mario world donkey kong and other games and in our trinket stores that we call fairs there were several ps1 games for us to buy and there were many places here in Brazil sleep Brazil ok there were several places that were like a book rental store but and video games we played and gave them back to the owner of the store my friend remembers how fun the good times were (:

We in Brazil felt that PS1 was intentionaly made to be pirated, i think that actually it was a strategy. To give you an idea gringos, i never meet or heard someone that had a PS1 not modified to run pirate, this person didn't existed, and more, i believe that it was the same for entire Latin America.

PS3 also failed hard here while the Xbox 360 was extremely popular due to the fact that you could pirate games alone. In fact, both the PS2 and X360 are still kinda popular here to this day.

i still had the master system and the genesis by the time dreamcast was released here by tectoy but it was very expensive and all my friends had already being swtiching to the other 3D consoles, PS1 and N64 so i ended up getting myself a PS1 via those shady means you talked about lol. i knew someone that was doing deals to get them shipped from overseas and then cross the border to pick it them up, so i got a deal on one of those, and it was still cheaper than the saturn, so that was the moment sega lost me to sony but i still do hold great appreciation for sega.

Back then in Germany so 1995 where the Sega Saturn was also available at and true, true the line up well and the console very expensive. I bought a PS 1 at that time because games like FF 7, RE 1 and various other games had more than convinced me and of course the price of the console, they had drastically reduced the price and unfortunately true in 1997 the line up of games for the Sega Saturn was not very good. I bought a Saturn very late and then only with us and Japan imports and of course some Pal games. Dan sees the line up really strong, even the Japan and US imports really hit it.

When I was younger I had this exact thought: like, why Tectoy keeps re-releasing Mega Drive and Master System stuff. Why not Saturn, or even better, Dreamcast? Now that I know more of a thing or two I know that the Saturn and the Dreamcast are much more complex to produce. So, you know, Mega and Master are super cheap. But the Saturn was actually still very popular here. In some ways more popular than the Dreamcast. I had a Saturn Skeleton, it was my love. Sold it after the drive died 🥲.

Well, living in Brazil, i stumbled upon a store that had a Sega Saturn in there, strangely enough it was a black variant, but, was it the north american one? I don't know, still, oh yeah, i can assure the price was extremely steep, you can get a Playstation 2 there for about 300 BRL, but that Sega Saturn, costed like... 1500 BRL? Holy...

I heard a history about the former TecToy' CEO Stefano Arnhold refuses a meeting with Steve Race in the 1995' E3 by loyallity to SEGA.
That time SCEA was planing release the PlayStation in Brazil, and been a former SoA Steve Race knew TecToy and Arnhold great job with SEGA, planing bring TecToy to the SCEA side.
But at that time nobody knew or even can predict the phenomenum that PlayStation will became one year after.
Arnhold did the right choice he could at that time, in my opinion, because SEGA almost knockout the powerfull Nintendo, and Sony was a begginer, so the logical choice was continue in the winner team, not do a very risc bet.
But time proves that stay beside SEGA was a mistake to TecToy. But who back in 1995 could knew, right?
