  • Starnet Ver 2 for PixInsight was available briefly before being removed from Sourceforge due to non-compliance with open source terms. It looks like the dev has made it available now on his own website now which is here: www.starnetast...
    Starnet helps you remove the stars from your astrophotography images. In this video I walk you through how I installed Starnet ver 2 and look at how well it performs compared to Starnet Ver 1 and also StarXterminator.

    Great video and thank you for the information! I installed Starnet V2 but I found that my current CUDA acceleration wasn't working. I have an RTX 3080ti card and had to update the CUDA packages. After that I noticed that Starnet V2 is twice as fast as V1 (and V1 was already flying). Starnet V2 is definitely a game changer, super clean star removal. Again, thanks for always putting out great content.

    NOTE: Starnet v2 appears to have been removed from Sourceforge because it failed to meet their open source terms/requirements. There is nothing I can do about this. The dev appears to have made it available now on his own website. See description for link. If you have any questions or problems with Starnet v2 please direct them to the developer.

    Thanks for this Shawn. Mac users (like me) need to be aware that this version still won't work with the new Macs (M1). Nikita says he doesn't have access to one to test it so that's that. I've confirmed it after trying to install.

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 2 года назад +1

      That’s really disappointing. I understand that the majority of users remain on PC but Mac users a big group, the M1 is the future of the Mac and performs while EMULATED near the top of ANY processor with Pixinsight (can you imagine if it was native?) and has been out for testing since summer of 2020. Both Starnet and Pixinsight need to make this a priority at this point because at some point the emulation will be removed from future macOS versions and it won’t just be starnet that doesn’t work. Maybe we can do a go fund me to get the developer a M1 Mac mini or MacBook Air?

    • @crawfprof
      @crawfprof 2 года назад +2

      @@canyonblue737-8 Interesting idea. On the Starnet front it seems Nikita just needs access to a new Mac and time. Time seems to be a huge factor given that writing code is a spare-time activity for Nikita. On every other front PI is working blazing fast and well on my M1 Max Mac. So fast that I try to do most of my processing on it. Thank goodness for StarXTerminator.

    Great video, thanks so much! One question, what about speed? Traditionally Starnet is so much slower than StarXterminator. I'd go with quality over speed, but the speed boost plus the quality improvement made me choose to buy StarX.

    • @VisibledarkAstro

      No speed change with Starnet ver2. Unless you have an nvidia card and want to try the hack to speed it up. Thanks for commenting! Cheers.

    As StarNet2's licensing has changed, do you think it'll still allow PI to automatically include StarNet2, or would that new licensing dictate a separate manual-install only?

      It looks like the dev hasn't met all of the requirements to be "open source" and they've suspended downloads temporarily until the dev submits what is required.

  • @JeffHorne

    Thanks, Shawn! Are you using GPU acceleration with V2? I was able to get it to work with my 3080 by keeping the original tensorflow.dll file from v1, but it crashes on me half the time.

    • @terrybertrand7159
      @terrybertrand7159 2 года назад +1

      I'm using a 3070 Ti and if I keep the CUDA tensorflow.dll and don't replace it with the Starnet V2 tensorflow.dll then both Starnet V2 and the CUDA speed-up mod both seem to be working great for me. I really like the Starnet V2 and speed-up combination!

    • @VisibledarkAstro
      @VisibledarkAstro  2 года назад +1

      My acceleration stopped working even keeping the same tensorflow.dll file. Haven't been able to get it working again. I just walk away for a bit and come back when I run Starnet! lol.

    • @terrybertrand7159
      @terrybertrand7159 2 года назад

      @@VisibledarkAstro Mine did the exact same thing. But then Nvidia came out with a new driver update for my RTX3070 ti and when I installed the new Nvidia driver the Starnet CUDA acceleration started working again. The GPU driver seems to be part of the solution, go figure....

  • @emuhead
    @emuhead 2 года назад

    Hopefully it's natively using the GPU now instead of the CPU. So much faster if so.

    • @terrybertrand7159
      @terrybertrand7159 2 года назад +2

      It doesn't, I just tried it. But if you have installed the Starnet Speed-up CUDA and leave the Speed-up tensorflow and don't replace it with the Starnet V2 tensorflow, then the speed-up (as well as SN V2) still works great!

    • @terrybertrand7159

      The stars are removed temporarily in order to stretch and process the linear image data without bloating the stars. After the processing is done the un-bloated stars are added back into the final image.
