I love the comparison commentary here. I often feel like many things we can get in travel retail are a captive audience buy that we may want because we can't get it elsewhere and then we are disappointed when we get home. Thankfully not all. And for Americans, there are lots of things we don't get here that you can get in the UK stores which are also in travel retail. (Laphroaig PX remains a staple buy for me, as well as The Chita, neither available in the US.) I also think the name Travel Retail is a better name because as you pointed out, not really duty free. We can bring 1 liter duty free back to the US. I paid taxes after this last trip and it wasn't bad, so I don't let that stop me. But I do think it is better to think about these stores as a way to get things you can't get elsewhere, and also as a way to get extra bottles that didn't fit in your luggage legally on the plane. This is why I find these videos helpful, because it can help you decide what to buy and pack and what to wait to get when you are on the way home. Really excellent, Ian! Please keep doing these!

Very interesting, Ian. I don't get to travel much, so seeing this was quite fascinating. Can't imagine the kind of person who picks up a 50yr old Fettercairn on a whim while passing through Heathrow, but I am but a poor working man, so what do I know?
Now a Dalmore with 5 different finishes, that's more like it....NOT!
I think you were spot on with the Glenfiddichs being among the most interesting options on display there.
    Thanks for sharing!

this made me laugh Sascha - very true. Hopefully one day we'll be able to swan through and pick up some 50Y/O juice, but until then the 'Fiddich works wonders. sláinte

Excellent vid, thanks for sharing. I for one, like the exclusivity that the travel retail editions bring, even if they are NAS. The Glenfiddich options look phenomenal, I'll prioritise them for a future U.S trip. Slainte mate! Best wishes from South Africa.

Why did you post a very old video? When was this recorded? The Travel exclusives currently available are not the ones on this video! The Ardbeg Smoketrails Manzanilla Edition has been out of stock for more than a month. But they now have the Cote Rotie edition in stock Great prices on all Ardbeg Expressions.

Have been doing a lot of travelling and whisky hunting over the past 2 years and duty-free has been getting progressively worse. My rule of thumb these days is, if it's in duty-free, then its probably not a great whisky and over priced.

Silly money just doesn't come close. In supermarkets in resort areas of the Japan Alps, supermarkets will carry imported whisky up to Stg.150. A bottle of Bowmore 12 will retail for around 6,000 yen, say Stg.31.50. All about rate of duty and exchange rate. Bottom line, Duty Free; keep walking.
