@@Justin_Leah Thanks a million really appreciate!! : ) If you have a website you recommend besides 591 and FB groups to find good and affordable apartments, I would be very grateful to know as well haha. You said 591 wasn't the holly grail but options are rare out of Taipei on FB. Thank you sooo much 🙂
@@sha3698 let me qualify our position on 591. If all you need is a dormitory style studio apartments, one that does not necessarily have a dedicated kitchen with a gas range and suitable space for preparing food, then 591 will actually be a great resource for finding such an apartment. Are you currently in taiwan? Hit us up over on Instagram if you have more questions, @getupgetoutgeetgone. (link in description).
We were just in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle in particular. Leah and some of her family live in Washington state just outside of Seattle. I couldn't believe how much our trip home cost us! The cost of gas, the food! Everything seems so expensive from when I was last there in 2016! We have such a higher quality of life here in Taiwan!
@@Justin_Leah Totally agree. The cost of living change so much in Seattle. grocery prices. Gas price. Most of my friend live around downtown Seattle have a average of $300 increase in monthly rent. I plan to move to some place like 30 min driving from Seattle.... anyway. Great to hear you have good experience in Taiwan.
Very informative video, thanks! I was wondering, what are your thoughts about a couple from the U.S. retiring in Taiwan? My wife was born in Taiwan but left to the U.S as a child. When we retire we are hoping to be able to live on our social security in Taiwan.
Funny you should bring up retirement. We have been discussing this as an option for our parents( and ourselves in due time). I do know that Taiwan does not have a retirement visa for foreigners. However, if your wife is a TW citizen then you would eligible for a residency visa (APRC). did you see our video on what we spend in a month. That video might give you some insight into the cost of living here.
@@Justin_Leah I did see your video on the monthly expenses and that was a great one. You guys broke it down in detail which helps a lot. I’ve been asking around as to how much it would cost for us as retirees and believe it or not I got figures as low as NT$20k for the two of us to about NT$100k on the high side. I’m guessing if things get a bit tight for us in Taiwan then I can possibly consider teaching English to supplement our monthly income. Question, what do foreigners do in Taiwan to save for retirement? As foreigners working in Taiwan do you get to participate in their version of social security?
Actually if you are in aprc holder you can participate in the Taiwanese version of public pension. There are some stipulations to maintaining your aprc which requires you to live at least 183 days out of the year in Taiwan and to be a broad no longer than one year, meaning outside of Taiwan that is. You can also get special permission and special work permission to work abroad and then return to Taiwan and keep your AP RC status
You guys have collected a wealth of information! Ewww I don't like the sound of urine stained mattresses 😱 The worst thing we found when apartment hunting in inner city Sydney was a used syringe just outside the front door. No thanks! Our new thing that we did for this week was to create and launch a website. It's still a work in progress, but considering I didn't know how to use WordPress a week ago I think we've done pretty well!
ha. there weren't a lot of run-down places but there were certainly many that did not fit the description or match the photos in the adverts...... that may have been the biggest frustration. We are so happy with where we ended up. ~JB
OMG a syringe???? That feels way worse than rat poo!! How exciting about your new website!! Is it up and running? Please pass the address along to us and let us know how we can support you!
@@Justin_Leah Yeah we were surprised that the real estate agent didn't move it out of the way before the open inspection! We ended up deciding that maybe city life wasn't for us, but not before Jon witnessed an attempted car break in! 😱 Our new website is jjbucketlisttravellers@gmail.com. we're in the process of trying to speed up the load time so I think all of our embedded videos have just disappeared 😅 but if you want a sneak preview of how it's going to look then most of the content should be up there now I think 🤞
I must admit, I was surprised to see that you left The Crescent but I'm so pleased to know you're happy with that decision :-) one of the hardest things I ever did was leave I just wanted the best decisions I've ever made! ~JB
You know Lee is the one that does all the editing so she's the one that makes it look good. We just couldn't understand why they would take us to an old doggie daycare when we told them we were looking for a two bedroom apartment. And we had someone with us that could speak the language! What the hell? 😆
I think the " things to do when viewing" would work well in the U.S. as do some of the negotiation tips. 1st commenter per usual Ms. Barbara! We really appreciate your support :)
Hi do you think in other areas of Tawian like Taichung and Kaoshiung the landlords will be the same way make excuses not to rent to you? But I'm sure if you bought a condo OUT right or normal apartment pay 2 yrs in advance I'm sure they will be happy to have you😁🤣🤣
I'm not sure if other towns would be the same or not. I'm sure it depends on how much exposure they've had to foreigners. I think there's just a lot of fear of not being able to communicate effectively with foreigners and therefore no one wants to hassle. Are currently landlord admitted to us that she was very very reluctant to rent to us because we were foreigners but when we offered a year's rent up front it really did change her mind and now her husband and her are constantly telling us what great tenants we are. And they gladly renewed the lease when the time came up.
@@Justin_Leah OK cool, as you know MONEY TALKS🤣🤣👍🏽 I would take the same approach offering at least one to two years up front …THANKS A MILLI‼️‼️ I will hopefully make the journey from NY to TAIPEI in MAY🤗 BTW is the money somewhat easy to figure out …like example $10.00 in their currency is the same as the US $10 dollars here and so on and so on?
@@ABOVETHECLOUDS007 We found that it's better to start thinking in the currency in which you're getting paid. So if you're going to be paid in New Taiwanese dollars, it's best to think in new Taiwanese dollars. Put a relatively rough conversion. Estimate is one US dollar equals 30 NTD
@@Justin_Leah 🙄🙄OH LORD I already see this money thing will be a issue 🤣🤣🤣but I could use the money converter on my phone huh? Well I’ll figure it out I also don’t want to get ripped off if u get my drift👍🏽🙄 Also is it there so our money is technically worth more so if I spend 100 in their currency it technically won’t be a lot in reality only in my head🤣🤣🤣🤣?
@@ABOVETHECLOUDS007 That's something else that we can say about Taiwan is that they are very honest and forthright. We have had no issues of being ripped off and it's such a relief. After having lived in Vietnam for 3 years where you're constantly fighting for a fair price. There's no need to worry about that here. At all!
Yo, the suicide thing is real. They think that if someone even tries to in their home it will be damned and they won’t be able to rent it because they HAVE to tell everyone interested in the apartment.. oh by the way.. someone tried to commit suicide here…
We've had some real "Deal-Breakers" when looking at apartments here in Taiwan. What's been a "Deal-Breaker" for you when renting?
