For today's Talk To Me Tuesday, I open about my personal experiences at University of California San Diego and University of California Los Angeles and why I decided to transfer from UCSD to UCLA. I talk about what drove me to transfer and if I thought it was worth it. I hope that you all understand that this is my personal experience and I encourage you to make your own experiences in college great by doing what is best for yourself since everyone's needs are different.

i am an introvert but i never would pass up the opportunity to make friends, if you sat next to me i wouldve totally have talked to you. me personally as an introvert i like to surround myself with extroverts, simply because they bring out the best in me, like my friends. and plus it only gets awkward because everyone thinks just because im quiet im naturally just an awkward person, but their the ones who always make the conversation awkward LIKE COMEON MAN TALK TO ME

For me UCSD was a perfect fit (I’m a marine bio major and scripps is a beautiful research facility). I was also accepted to UCLA, but I felt that UCSD was better for me due to my major. I’m glad that you fell in love with UCLA though! They’re both amazing schools :)

As a 3rd year UCSD student, I definitely relate to this video. Even though I'm introverted, it gets discouraging to never go out and never talk to people when that's a big part of the college experience! The overall vibe is really cold, and since I'm introverted it is even more difficult to find friends. I'm a Linguistics (Speech and Hearing Sciences) major, and while I love my major and the linguistics department, I have lost "friends" who looked down on me when I switched from a STEM major. It's nice to hear from someone who had a similar experience, I thought it was just me!! I'm glad you found a great college experience at UCLA!

dang that sucks. sorry to hear that. on 1 hand, being a science student is totally intensive in a different way than non-science, but on the other hand people could be so snobby.
I (math-cs) personally don't care what major anyone is in but only hope that my friends/acquaintances respect my time.
sorry to hear about this again, it sucks that people based their pride on what they do but this is also the fact that allows them to excel in what they do. In the end, we all have our own respective job in our preferred industry and I feel it's great to know more people from different cultures/majors provided that we all share the same consensus of treating each other as human beings.

I'm a senior and I'm super super into entrepreneurship. I love interacting with people and making friends. I was really excited bc I thought ucsd was a really good option, but i feel like since we have similar interests, I should rethink it hahah. Thank you so much for this video :) it really helped!!

I go to ucsd, and I literally feel the way you explained! UCLA was actually my first option but wasn't accepted as a transfer student from my community college so I went with UCSD, got one year left so don't even find the point in transferring again but if I could I definitely would! UCLA is literally a dream! Great advice though I remember when you were at ucsd though! Congratulations on graduating! :)
I got rejected to UCLA yesterday and I got accepted to UCSD! However, my dream school is UCLA so I was thinking of going to UCSD, then transferring to UCLA just like you. Princess Cookies it's really hard to transfer from a uc tho, particularly in a school as good as ucsd. Even if you have perfect grades, which is extremely hard due to ucsd' Competitiveness, they can reject you because they simply see no reason to accept you when you're already at a prestigious university. If you absolutely wanna go to ucla, your best bet is to go to a cc with the TAP program to ucla. Otherwise, don't go to ucsd expecting to be able to transfer, although it can happen. The girl in the video is the exception, not the rule

You should always take people's words with a grain of salt. I watched this video months back before visiting the universities and became scared of UCSD. Personally, I found UCSD quite homely (UCLA I found to be a bit more on the snobbish side, but it's okay I'm sure there are great people there too) when I visited and there are many opportunities to make friends- honestly, sometimes it depends on YOU to make friends and start a conversation, which I have no problem doing. I'm not an a current alumni and was accepted to UCSD too and I will be attending. There is also many fb groups you can join to make friends at UCSD. :)
Also, "unfriendliness" and "looking down on people" can also be a factor of who you choose as your friends and peers.

As a Poli Sci major, would you say there were a good amount of clubs at UCSD that were political/govt/advocacy oriented and that didn’t have a stem requisite?

One of my best friends is an art major here at UCSD and he does love the program but he sometimes feels the social aspect is lacking as well since being a creative person he likes to share and collaborate and that can be hard sometimes

Hey, so i applied to UCSD for mechanical engineering but got admitted as undeclared.. considering what you said about how clubs rejecting you for not being in the STEM field of study, its very disheartening. Especially since i really wanted to go into the STEM field. How would u say the process of declaring a major is in UCSD? I would be willing to take the risk of going to UCSD but i feel that going to a school that has already accepted me in the STEM field might be the better alternative haha

Really wanna go to UCLA but I got waitlisted and still currently waitlisted. Ended up choosing UCSD! Still think a lot about hoping I somehow manage to get off the waitlist still bc ucla seems more for me, and this video definitely proved it!!

Im so sorry life was like that at UCSD, but its great that you found what you wanted at UCLA, Cindy! Its awesome that you took matters into your own hands and transferred. Congrats and good luck post college!!!!
By the way, were those people you approached really shy or just rude and exclusive? I can't imagine anybody rationally ignoring you like that. I'm still in high school, and there are some people like that, and it frustrates me. but my mentality is that they cannot control my success, and you too have come such a long way since then!

袁子盁 he/she never said you did. I went to UCSD and I transferred out as well bc people were usually hostile and sometimes plain rude. You could not go anywhere without being judged.

And yes, I agree that UCSD was a toxic and emotionally neglectful environment, especially for the undergrads there. All of the attention was given to the grads, as they were our TAs and stuff.
I wanted to transfer out but couldn't cuz I took my major classes first and ge's later; although I do believe that if you made a commitment to do something, you should follow through with it and not run away from your problems. There will be other problems in other places, anyway.
Anyway, things are better now for me as a graduate student at a more healthier community liberal arts school. Things do get better in the future sometimes!

I also did Poli Sci/ Public Policy at UCSD. If you thought you felt secluded, imagine coming in as a transfer student who's in his twenties LOL. Such a socially dead school. Thank GOD I found a few really close friends who are my ride or die, but I agree, La Jolla is boring and not that close to SD. I had the pleasure of living off-campus and made the best of San Diego. But it's nothing compared to San Francisco where I originally came from. And yes, for a STEM school, UCSD has an amazing poli sci department. My favorite class was Political pscyhology.
I'm already committed to UCSB but I got off SD waitlist 2 days ago and I'm so stuck- I don't know if I should give up the social scene for something more academic, and also Berkeley's supposed to come out in a couple of days so I'm so confused!

you apply (most likely) in fall of junior year to attend the new school the following fall of senior year (next fall) at almost any school in the US you can do this and its not just junior/senior year! You can transfer from a 4 year university after your first year or even semester/quarter
I spent a year at UCSD. I got an amazing scholarship. I was into surfing. I applied to transfer within the first semester. It was such a bummer school. It's such a dead campus. The only thing to do was to hitch a ride to TJ. Also, everybody was so cookie-cutter suburban and really narrow that way. I got into UCLA and was super duper happy! Yes, UCLA has its problems, too. But I thrived

I’m going to UCSD this fall as a freshman straight from high school 😅 and I’m planning on transferring to UCLA because initially I wanted to go there but I got denied 😓 However, after watching this video and the other video about the process of transferring, I definitely am interested in still pursuing my dream of going to UCLA
you should go to a CC first, you will save a lot of money and time, also it is a lot more achievable i think to go to a cc then transfer to UCLA, the UCSD to UCLA route is way harder (trust me I checked the stats...they barely accept anyone)

well UCLA has a basketball and football team which can help to build a sense of community and pride. UCLA has a longer history and deeper alumni base. But UCSD has a such an amazing campus. But it depends on the individual.
Going to UCSB rn but I'm hoping to transfer to UCLA after 2 years (current High School senior). Needless to say, I got rejected when I applied as a freshman :(. As far as the reasons that UCLA will accept, there are two I'm thinking about: proximity to home and campus culture. Are those good reasons?
Yes but also think about the different relationships you might be able to build between the 2 campuses that might help with your career (like profs and friends in the same program). If one gives you a better chance in building connections with experts in your field, then I think you should consider that school. You can make friends anywhere and party even after college, but relationships r harder to build after graduation :)
@Wade Sultan , glad I actually able to answer fairly timely... If you go to SB, there's a good chance that you'll want to stay the duration of four years because you'll probably grow to really love the school. It's an excellent college, and its academics are severely under-appreciated. Not everyone that goes there is into raging, etc., and its ranking is certainly climbing.
But as others have stated it's easier to transfer to UCLA from a California Community College than from a four-year, including the UCs. I've been looking for this metric for awhile:

but you have to find it in this dashboard. You have to expand out the tabs to the right with the ">" tab. Look for and click on the "TR GPA by Col" and open it. Look for the source college "University of California" and click on it. Click on "Los Angeles" as destination campus and it'll show you the gpas of the applicants, those accepted, and those enrolled at UCLA. For a transfer from UCSB to UCLA, the average of the accepted was 3.89.
That's astronomical; the transfer to UCLA from CCC was about a 3.8 in 2019. But high grades will be much more easily attained at CCC, so the advice by others is true: not only are grades more facile there, but the priority is given to them since they're looking for a four-year in which to enroll.
So if you really have your heart set on UCLA, then I'd enroll at a CCC, and there are some top-notch feeders to UCLA: Santa Monica College -- look at the outrageous numbers that transfer from there; Los Angeles Pierce; Pasadena CC; Santa Barbara CC; some of the CCs in OC; and some from the Bay -- Diablo Valley, De Anza.

@@robjohnston366 I actually looked at that and have seen the 3.89 number. There are a few details I left out: I would apply as a Mathematics/Economics major to UCLA, and the industry I want to go into (IB or Consulting) pretty much requires me to transfer to UCLA because they will always take a UCLA student over a UCSB student. However, it also shuts down CCC to UC transfers, HARD. In my situation, it's best for me to do a UC to UC transfer because I still have access to the resources I need to get into IB or consulting during my first 2 years. To be specific, I want to get into the Finance Connection at UCSB, which is my best shot into that field right now. Also, according to Ms. Sun, UCLA is the most friendly to UC intercampus transfers. I also checked UCLA's Transfer Admission Guide and it says "We give highest priority to applicants from California community colleges and other UC campuses". For most, I would agree that CCC is the better route, simply because yes, priority is higher for CCC applicants, even though 2nd highest is other UCs. However, for my particular situation, it's best for me to do UC to UC.

This makes sense presumably because you want to start out fast in internships, and club membership for IB, consulting, etc. You'd have that at SB whether you stay or not, but you wouldn't at CC. UCLA also has an umbrella org/club Undergraduate Business Society, which I'm sure about which you know.
Also a lot of transfers from CC have a hard time with Bus Econ courses because they need to be mature transfers with two years under their belt, which impinges not only on internships, etc., but also with respect to the density of bizecon courses they would be taking in two years. It sounds somewhat the same in Math Econ. UCLA really has to do something about this, because the Bizecon majors who transfer from CC are highly qualified 3.9+ students.

s n compared to SDSU, not really. I’m not bashing on UCSD, it’s a beautiful school and actually is my dream school to go to. I go to SDSU. But I’ve lived in San Diego my whole life, never had I heard about UCSD having any kind of social life. I’m sure there’s groups as you mentioned, but as a whole it’s not very social. But again not everyone goes to college with the intention of partying

UCSD was my main but when I went to the school a couple time, I felt so excluded so I changed my main to Davis and now I’m accepted to both but UCSD gave me the major I wanted so I’m so sad and discouraged and heartbroken.
I am 13, turning 14 and UCSD is my dream college. I was looking for a college that had the best education on computer science I could get, but I’m pretty sure I won’t get in unless I start working harder to obtain a high intellect of classification and social intelligence. I currently have social skills that will get me killed during college and high school. And classification skills that delay my thought process in particular situations. Any suggestions?

Don't stress too much about college yet. Socially, everyone gets there. I am 19 and I myself am naturally introverted and tend to not want to talk to many people. Nothing wrong with it. It's a difference in personalities. If UCSD is your dream college, it's good that you recognize that you will need to work hard in high school to go there. But even if that doesn't work out, transfer is always an option going to a community college; like myself. Best of luck.

Oops! Better to respond late than never. I have applied to UCLA/UCB/UCD in the UC system, and also to Stanford and Dartmouth. I would highly recommend college if you want to save thousands of dollars, don't know what you're doing, or if you're not ready to leave home/didn't get into the universities you wanted to as a freshman. Transferring to a UC out of a California community college is so much easier than freshman admission in my opinion.
No, it wasn't always my plan to go to a community college. I got denied by all the UC's I applied for as a freshman. I decided to stay home to give myself a second shot. Plus, I really wasn't ready to leave home. There's a bit of a stigma around community college students, but I've learned to just laugh it off. While they're spending $20,000 in tuition, I'm spending $50 per semester.
How hard is it to adjust and succeed in the quarter system? Also is UCLA super competitive?
Not hard if you are not a procrastinator. Stay on top of your work and it'll be fine.

I “want” to go to UCSD because i am in The Preuss School UCSD and all we really learned about is how great UCSD is and how if you get into UCSD you get a free scholarship and we are alway touring around there so I really only see the bright side but after watching this video it really help me thank you !

I did the same thing. UCSD is beautiful, but a grind. I had a lot more fun at UCLA. Pro tip: unless you are crazy smart, don't go to Revelle! (I am not crazy smart.)
I’m confused when she said UCSD is split into 6 colleges? What does that mean? Are all UCs like that? If yes or not, which UCs are also like that where they “split”? And what is revelle college? That is part of UCSD?
I am also not crazy smart but I am in revelle.. I didn’t really research much about it so when I was applying I pretty much ranked the colleges in a random order. Didn’t realize there would be such a difference in the GE requirements. But honestly. I am going to still do it. I mean I already accepted UCSD’s offer. The courses are okaaaay I guesss.... I’ve been taking a summer class to get 8 free college units so! I think I’ll be okay... hopefully :(

you'd think ucla would be much better because it's much more well known, but pre-med at ucsd is actually pretty good from what my dad says lol. I think both would be a great choice. and besides, where you go for undergrad isn't that important for med school.

@Lien Lam , they're both excellent for pre-med. UCLA is first in the country in applicants to med school every year, and most likely first in the number who do go to m-school -- here's a link that shows the top universities for those who applied in for 2019-20,

There's a little mismatch of the number of UCLA baccalaureates who applied to m-school in 2019 between the aamc's and UCLA's site because there's some mixing between the prior year's, 2108, and 2019's applicants -- in 2018, UCLA shows more of its bacc applicants who applied than the aamc's, and in 2019, the aamc shows more applicants from UCLA than the UCLA site. I adjusted for the higher aamc number for UCLA to match the aamc numbers.
For UCSD, I estimated the acceptance rate for its 564 graduates. The rate for SD isn't as high as UCLA's, but it's undoubtedly higher than the national average.
Either way, either university would be excellent for premed and either will help you get to med school. But the main impetus to getting into m-school is mostly by your accomplishments. You could go to a low-ranking CSU -- don't mean to demean the system or its schools -- and you'd have presumably the same chance of getting into m, because m's are not going to look at your college pedigree; they're going to look at your mcats and grades -- and how well you interview.

I remember watching this when I was a senior in high school... now I’m almost done with my first year at UCSD and I’m glad I went but I want to transfer already. This school is so dead. I am doing great (3.7 GPA) with Bio major but even being on the ski team, fraternity, other “party” clubs and it’s still so badly dead. It’s crazy. Atmosphere sucks. But academics definitely super super top tier

pearlie elder Same!! I'm 13 but the acceptance rate is 18% so it's hard to get in and UCSD has an acceptance rate of like 39% or 33%.
i got into both and I picked UCSD.
You can definitely do it! :) I got into Berkeley and I don't really see myself as the most stellar student. Truly anything and everything is possible in life.

I can't wait to transfer. I get my Associates in Gender studies in may from a CC. I want to transfer to UCLA and get my B.A in LGBT studies.
Also UCLA has better reputation and a respected NCAA sports programs

UCSD is socially dead!!! If you're a social butterfly, don't expect everyone to chat with you, and be like you. The culture is different, and 60% of students are from Asia. This statistic is true due to the University generating profits. So image people coming from another culture(stick to their kind.) Not a place really to make friends for everyone.
