@@jayarmstrong the epidemic of myopia that develops in children is because as they are growing, they don't receive enough sunlight (2 hours a days of direct sunlight every day). Because of that, the eyeball keeps lengthening.

In Sweden, if you work more than 1 hour per day in front of a screen, your employer must pay for eye exams and "terminal glasses" - basically individually adapted reading glasses so your eyes can relax. You intentionally make yourself nearsighted enough that the horizon focal distance moves to the edge of your desk.
I wish you would have mentioned reading glasses as a good option for those who do not have the money or space to work in front of a huge TV. 😊

It's my first time hearing about this. There is very limited sources in english on this topic, can you suggest some good one? The one's from the first page of google seems to indicate terminal glasses is a glasses with some sort of magnify \ refracting lenses that allows you to be more than 50cm from a computer with straight posutre. Which is both thing that can be achieved by repositioning yourself & monitor and not letting myopia progress in the first place.

    • @traal
      @traal 2 месяца назад +10

@@jayarmstrong they’re just reading glasses with the correct prescription. What reading glasses do, is they have magnifying lenses, that move your interval of possible focal distances closer to your eyes.
A fully sighted person who relaxes their eye muscles will see the horizon in focus, sharply. So that is the fully relaxed state of your eyes. In order to focus closer than the horizon, you need to tighten the ring muscles in your eyes more and more, the closer you look. To focus closer than arms length is quite strenuous, just like Ben said. Reading glasses make you nearsighted, so you are no longer able to focus far away. When you relax your eyes, your focal distance is instead placed much closer.
If you measure the distance from your eyes to the edge of your desk, an optician can prescribe you glasses that enable you to focus that far away when your eyes are completely relaxed, but no further. This greatly reduces your eye strain while working at a desk. Your eyes can stay mostly relaxed all day.

Look out of the window far into the distance regularly and let your eyes rest as they look at far away objects. Tension of the muscles around the eye cause the reshaping of the lens over time, so massages and relaxing the eye rather than straining can help a lot. Also, literally go outside more.

In a strange way, the lenses and stereoscopy within a VR headset mean this isn’t an issue. Potentially good for myopia, but not for eye strain.

You notice this everywhere, for example Apple's screen distance feature states that it exists to decrease the chance of myopia in children and to reduce visual stress, they make no claims about myopia for adults. I suppose it's a case of better safe than sorry but if we lived our lives subscribing to every single thing that could possibly maybe reduce some risk (e.g. California telling you tons of things you come into contact with daily can increase your chance of developing cancer), it wouldn't be too fun.

This is also the reason why I am afraid of trying vr for work \ gaming. Because the screen is so close. Or maybe i'm wrong and it'll actually be a panacea for close work induced myopia. There is a dire need for research on this topic.
Though, it seems most of the people who use it constantly already has severe myopia problems.
At least from what i personally talked to\ read the articles.
Btw the brightness is measured in Lumens, so having 10 of brightness doesn't say much. Also glossy screen are sharper while being prone to reflections, but matte creen are little blurrier while far less dependant on outside lighting conditions. There is also an aspect of outdors having differnt lighting spectrum than blue light of computer screens. It's a complicated subject that can't be boiled down to just low & or hight screen brightness.
The dangers of myopia by itself is hugely overstated. I do know a lot of old people who lived through they retirement without any eye operation.

I wouldn't say myopia is "eye damage". Unless you have myopia from birth, it's just the eye adapting to what you do. It's a tradeoff, you see better upclose, but worse far away. Using my experience as an example, I used to get very bad headaches when working on the computer for prolonged periods of time until I developed myopia. The damage mostly comes from the myopia being too severe. That increases eye pressure, risk of retinal detachment, risk of macular degeneration, etc...

The problem is: when you get prescribed glasses, it’s to “fix” your nearsightedness in its totality. If you’re prescribed a pair of glasses -1.00 glasses, that means your eyes can see clearly up to 1 meter. -2.00 means you can see up to 1/2.00 or half a meter. And -4.00 means you can see up to 1/4.00 meter or 25 cm. That means, if your eye doctor tells you you need -2.00 glasses, sure you need them to see everything clearly, BUT not for anything less than 50cm away! Now, to take this even further, even if you have perfect vision and are worried about becoming myopic due to working at the computer for long periods of time, try wearing glasses with a +1.00 power. RPV is an important factor in eyeball lengthening. If you chronically look at close distances, the muscles turning the eyes inward become very tight. Imagine what happens to the eyeball when you then try to look farther away, i.e. the muscles turning the eyeballs outward pull against the tight antagonists.

It looks like there's lots more to it than that after researching this. Your eyeball elongates as a result of the lack of outdoors time and near work. This is a serious issue that makes it harder for your eyes to form a clear image on the retina but also leads to the detached retina issue.

I have (manageable, but noticeable) myopia and I run a pretty similar setup! And I also use mine for movies.
Now, just about the weirdest problem I have with this is I can make it look level when I'm one meter away, but then it looks slightly tilted from across the room when I'm watching TV -- and the other way around!
I've measured, leveled, and adjusted everything I could think of so at this point I'm starting to believe it's an optical paradox due to how big it physically is, even if I'm never *that* close to it...
Have you ever noticed something like that, or is my apartment just non euclidean?

Good video but you didn't take into consideration many problems that current OLED displays have.
For example the PWM flicker issues that most OLED displays have cause eye strain, headaches and other problems.
Also OLED displays emit more blue light compared to LCDs affecting your circadian rhythm and interfering with sleep patterns.
So OLED displays are not the best for eyes and general health imo. At least not in their current state.

Unfortunately, Meta Quest 3's resolution isn't good enough for text, and it requires placing it at just the right position in order to get any level of clarity.
While it may solve the "looking too close" problem, you'll end up squinting to read the jaggy text and constantly readjusting your headset whenever you move your head.
I hear Vision Pro is slightly better, but still not good enough for text-based work. I haven't gotten the chance to try it myself, but based on discussions on reddit and other message boards this seems to be the case.

What happened to all the custom split keyboards you've built? Any new insights on those or are you maybe don't use them as often?

Not sure about the statistic and the algorithm Really disliking the clickbaity thumbnails recently. Obnoxious and annoying, so into the face.
A better replacement would be a logo stamped aside the regular thumbnails.

I found ar glasses like nreal/xreal airs perfect alternative. Although not as sharp for texts but well worth, more comfortable and can multi-task

Mounting it to the wall plus having one of those ergonomic forearm supports clamped to your desk so you're sitting slightly further away can probably make it a sufficient distance even on regular shallow desks.
