I was born and raised in Harvey IL and always thought it was someone’s home but as I grew up I noticed it was ugly and abandoned.. but all my years living here I never ever thought of getting too close or going in there.
For real my grandmother was in harvel illinois me father and brother visited her in 1990s-2000s then she passed she live in harvel 163rd phoenix st. Umm you have fb you seem to share same interest as me
I grew up in Harvey from the time I was born in 1975 until my grandmother lost our family home in the late 90's. My cousin took me and my brother to the castle when we were little kids and showed us around. Just recently I had been telling my fiance about this castle where we grew up but never knew it's name. Thankfully, the internet us still undefeated and it KNEW! Lol I wish like fkn hell they never let that castle go to hell and someone who actually cares about Harvey, Phoenix, and all the other surrounding towns could rehab it. It has been in existence since the fkn 1300's!!!!!
When I was a nine years old my best friend was killed and found there. It's emotional watching this. I was mad that my mom didn't let me leave n go wonder. I feel he would b alive if I was there. His mom didn't even get to say goodbye to her son. R.I.P. Donte
A little history on the place: This castle was constructed by Lord Fredrick Bum in the 12th century (hence the name Bum’s castle). Most of the castle was destroyed during the great hobo war of 1343 between the Bum dynasty and the Vagrant dynasty. The Bums prevailed, however, with their castle destroyed, they began to roam the streets asking for spare change, with the hopes that one day, they will acquire the funding necessary to rebuild their grand palace. And with it, rebuild the pride in their distinguished family name.
I was born and raised in Harvey, and have passed this thing by I don't know how many times. When I was in elementary school in the 70's, it had long been abandoned and called "Bum's Castle". But I honestly thought that was just something the kids at my school who were older had made up. But I've never once been close enough, or bold enough, to go inside for a look-see. If you've never been to Harvey, the best I can compare it was is downtown Beirut. It's a demilitarized zone. Harvey was a nice place once, but from the 80's on, it went into a massive decay spiral from which it has never recovered. Harvey went from mostly white families, to mixed, to almost completely black families now. If there was one thing I would most credit with the destruction of the city it was a scheme called "white flight". Disreputable realtors would sell homes to black families who could not afford them, causing houses to flip over and over, which is where the realtors would make the money, on each new sale. By deliberately pulling the worst kind of people into these houses, the realtors played on the fears of white residents, who fled the city, putting more houses up for sale, which were then sold DELIBERATELY to more people who could not afford them. Realtors played the racism of white residents against them, and brought in the kind of families who would make those racist fears seem real, so they sold their homes at a loss, and black families who wanted a home got screwed over by being duped into loans they could not pay off. It was a big mess that left the city in ruins and eroded its tax base.
Our Black family owned our home, as did many of our relatives for generations. Daddy worked at Bliss and Laughlin cutting steel. No one else wanted his position, so he hardly missed work. He had a seizure once, and was trying to get up from his hospital bed to go to work! I graduated from Thornton Township High School, from which I had my foundation to graduate from LMC in CA (earning 3 degrees with honors)! GOD saved me from atheism in 1972, and called me to preach in 1985! HalleluJah!
i know a whole lot of people who went into the castle in the 70 s...I was never brave enough to go near it. just had to mention this too...I have a differing opinion on the changes...a lot of people moved because factories and stores were closing...recession of the seventies...
It is indeed, a castle. Been there many times as a child and played all around the parts we could get to at the time. Wish the town would rehab or at least make it a landmark! It's been there since the 1300's!!
Yesss! I’ve always wanted to know how this place looked since I always see it from where I live. My brothers gone there before and I used to think it was a haunted castle with witches when I was around 8 😂 3:34 my brother put that ladder there! And at 2:20 he got cut by glass when trying to climb up that with his friends
I grew up in Harvey until 1977, we left when an armed gunman ran into our yard. We lived on the edge next to a car dealership, but looks like a hotel is there. I remember when the race track burned. Turns out I now love near Debartolo who is rumored to have burned it down. My dad wanted us to move so we would have a better education and crime was starting to set in. I had a great street with lots of friends, it really was once a nice place to live. So sad too see it so bad and my home is actually worth less than what my parents sold it for back in 1977. They house was burned at least once since that time. Really sad.
When I used to play there in the 80's there was an actual cannon that was still there. I did not see it in this video so someone must have found a way to remove it. I miss my childhood!
Just went here & found an un-recorded possibly un-discovered tunnel underneath the main “Bum’s Castle” building. Video should be on my channel this weekend.(12/16/22)
WE CALLED IT HOBO CASTLE.....DID GRAFFITI AS A KID...ME NERO AND MY BOY NUMSCO...WOULD RIDE THE FRIEGHT TO GET THERE...IT HAS CRUMBLED A LOT...CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST....

it's abandoned, i live a couple minutes away from the castle and lived in Harvey my entire life. it's a popular place where kids like to visit and mess around in.
There is a day care and it's called minds over matter and treat kids bad my baby brother always cry's and they say to the baby's shut up and also don't care when one is crying they don't care about baby's and a boy teacher made big kids to run and told a girl to run fast but she had asma and almost died
I’m glad to find a video like this, im a citizen of harvey il and not many people know about this town, thank you for this amazing video.
Thanks for watching!

Lets not forget the resurgence of the Vagrants and hobo guilds in the early 14th century. 👊

That’s right! They call it white flight. I call it organized oppression
Janica Hampton call it whatever you want but no one wants to live in a crime zone, that’s what I call it.

This is an old grain elevator according to my late father, who was a lifelong Harvey resident. I lived here until 1987.
Wow.. That's a really crazy place. That would totally give me big heebie-geebies. Great video.
I grew up in Harvey and left in 92 at 17 years old, I remember me and a few of my buddies went in that building we called it Hobo Castle 😂
