Aaron Swartz was a visionary, a champion for freedom, and a true patriot. It’s truly tragic to see what happened to him. He pioneered the greatest era of the internet. Before algorithms and out of control censorship and death scroll. It was silly, goofy but incredibly fun.

I got permabanned for sending a subreddit mod the dictionary definition of Censorship after I received a 3 day ban with the option to talk to a mod.
For context of the initial ban, I said something in my local cities subreddit that I suppose they didnt agree with addressing the homeless issue that is prominent around where I live(a ghetto). I'm left to assume they lived in the suburb of the city, where the politicians like to get summer homes. The permaban further reinforced the irony of sending the definition of censorship to a moderator of a subreddit that claims to be progressive and "pro opinion" - after once already being censored and then finally being "silenced" entirely.
Just kinda found it silly, it takes 5 minutes to make a new reddit account, you dont even gotta confirm an email, they have zero power but must feel like big boys.

I deleted my Reddit 20 minutes ago and it feels like a dark thick cloud has vanished above me lol. I refuse to be on an app where I have to have a hive mindset, while being stripped of my personal rights to express myself on topics that I enjoy. Why anyone would want to be apart of Reddit is beyond words of comprehension 😄.
I used to use Reddit quite regularly. Tried to quit a couple times but always went back. Then I got permabanned, and I actually deserved the permaban. I went off on someone who was being particularly hateful and said some pretty nasty shit that I honestly shouldn't have. Haven't touched Reddit since and I'm honestly glad I got banned.

r/politics once was a decent subreddit for civil discussion from all political views. However in April 2016 nearly all the mods at the time were ousted and new mods put in place. Literally overnight it changed into a pro Hillary Clinton anti Bernie Sanders subreddit and once they cheated Bernie out of the nomination it was all anti trump and still is to this day. I was very active on reddit from 2008 to 2018, ended up getting perma banned for something very trivial, never went back after that and don't regret it at all. It's a cesspool of indoctrination.

The moderation of reddit is pretty horrible. I once got banned for three days for saying "If someone acts completely retarded..." meaning "If someone acts really stupid...", but for some reason the word retarded is not allowed at all, not even when it does not refer to a person with disabilities which is how I used it.

Reddit used to be such a cool website. Legit free speech, to a fault sometimes. Now, you’re hard pressed to find a subreddit that isn’t extremely over moderated.
Moderation is a lie. There is no moderation when the moderators are always extremist atheist libtards.
The moderators doing the moderation is only half of it. The mass upvoting and downvoting buries some well reasoned posts down to oblivion where they'll be piled on with even more downvotes and eventually hidden (psychology at it's finest). Whilst tow tier ones without a shred of credibility can accelerate to the top and continue to be heaped with upvotes simple because it aligns with people's viewpoints, not because they actually are a well reasoned argument.
As a result of this lack of balance within threads, where one poster is a victor whilst another is the loser, drives users away from hostile SubReddits into other new SubReddits where karma can be farmed, and where their views and arguements would be both reinforced and further entrenched. This breeds extremism everywhere. It compartmentalizes people and creates bitter camps where people aren't willing to engage with each other at all, and view each other as the enemy.
I used Reddit really casually, and while I was aware of at least a theoretical sensorship issue, it was really only when I started to get involved in the ground floor of a brand new subreddit that I came to understand just how disgusting of a place it had really become. Right out of the gate, the conversation became one of how are we going to control what other people say. How are we going to build up the walls of an echo chamber. How can we build a safe space in which to scream "woe is me".
It was absolutely disgusting. These people would prefer a blatantly engineered delusion over the outside chance of facing an uncomfortable point of view. There is no growth there, there is no understanding there, just pigs wallowing in their own shit. There was no big bad power tripping mod, at least not yet, but that's exactly what the community was after.

I haven’t really used Reddit but my friend said the bias, and hate was out of control. Anything on the “wrong” side of the political scale would get severely downvoted and you would lose all your Karma.
Yes, a lot of reddit problems arent really a problem of powermods but of the design itself, which encourages "soft" censorship by basically hiding actual discourse while favoring circlejerk. Say about 4chan what you want but its design of not having accounts, which restricts powerusers to a degree and the content that youre the most likely to see first being the thread which was most recently updated, encouraging more controversial discussion.
There are plans to tokenize karma. They're fighting with the SEC about it right now. There are some really cool subreddits but it's not even worth looking for them anymore.

I remember feeling the brunt of the censorship change back in 2014, sometime during the whole GG fiasco anyone trying to dig up what was happening got their posts removed and or got shadowbanned. Shadowbanning is a lot more effective than straight up banning, cus the user remains under the impression that they are actively contributing to dialogue. Banned users can simply make a new account. Shadowbanned users might not notice for weeks, after which the conversation has shifted or died down.
It designed to keep you as a consumer whilst silencing your voice. Keep consuming approved content and anything censored is simply invisible, making it look like there is only 1 prevailing opinion. This type of censorship can drive you mad trying to get people to listen when nobody can hear you.

Funnily enough the only reason I found the subreddit that opened my eyes to the culture of censorship that is encroaching on our culture was because it was quarantined, displaying a subscriber count of 0 on the Reddit app. I became curious as to how a sub had 0 subscribers despite being the third result for "Cringe", which led me to becoming an active member of CringeAnarchy in the last few months of its life before it got inevitably banned.
Cringe Anarchy was great. They chose to get banned on their feet rather than survive on their knees. The sheer memery in the last hour of that sub's existence was awe-inspiring. I am proud to say that I contributed a tiny bit to the frantic, defiant humor of that last hour.

@@darkcat6530 In retrospect nothing really. Basically the last bastion of /pol humor on reddit that had a great sense of community after constantly being on the edge of getting the ban hammer. It basically became the only sub I frequented, so once it got canned I left reddit entirely, only using it to get a support question for game cracks and hacked systems from then on.

Reddit removed a comment I made for harrasment, when if they'd bothered to read the thread they would have seen that it in fact wasn't harrasment and myself and the personal I was apparently "harassing" were both in agreement that my comment was misconstrued and not meant as harrasment or slander. Both myself and the other party apologized to each other, me for making a comment that was poorly worded, and her for instantly jumping to that conclusion. We even msged each other after that and had a plesant conversation. Reddit moderators and as bad as the sub moderators. At first I thought saying all mods are neck-beards on a power trip, was an over reaction by some kids who got banned. However after recent things Ive seen on the platform Im kinda starting to agree with the over reaction.
Reading the comments, I think we all can agree we regret not knowing about who or what happened to Aaron, and despise the selfish dickless actions the company did to his name
Honestly hopefully in the future someone will come out and spread his tale, because we all can agree he did not deserve this. The website did not deserve it. And most of all, the split this impacted on the internet could have been prevented easily

I stopped using Reddit just about this time of year two years ago. One of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. If you use Reddit, please take my advice and drop it. You learn many things on Reddit and see amazing and hilarious things, but it’s simply not worth the psychological damage it inflicts upon you. When you drop Reddit (all the same goes for Twitter btw) you *will* notice improvement in your life. You will be more sociable, more open-minded, and more understanding of other’s views.

I used reddit for over 6 years and recently got permanently and indefinitely banned off the site. This ban happened because I messaged mods regarding a ban on a specific subreddit. I made a post in a sub about my own mental health struggles (my hopelessness) and the mods banned me from that sub. I made my own thread that was about my own personal struggles. The ban from the sub happened because I responded to a lengthly reply someone gave me about how to completely change my life with "sde seems easier." I struggle with depression and when faced with a lengthly to do list I felt hopeless. When writing this I was only thinking of my own hopelessness. I messaged the mods explaining that the comment I made was not directed at anyone but myself. The mod then started calling me a terrible person suggesting that the original meaning of my comment was for everyone in the entire world to just give up on their lives? The users response was about me and the entire thread was about my own personal situation so I didn't understand who else I was supposedly condemning with 3 words. I clarified extensively that this is not what I meant or intended yet the mod refused to listen. The mod then went on a rant about how even when they were "r a gn point" they didn't tell others to give up on their life. I didn't understand why they were still telling me that I said something that I directly messaged them to clarify I didn't mean nor intend. I told the mod to calm down because they were a mod of a subreddit and I could become a reddit mod myself (I believed that reddit was a place for the people and that anyone could become a mod) or I could just use a different account to post on the sub. The next day all of my accounts were banned over this? I was permanently banned from the entire site after using the site for 6 years without issue. I tried to appeal but they only allow you to submit a very limited message. After submitting an appeal I recieved an automated message saying that I would not be unbanned. I was very upset because I had used reddit for years as a place to freely express myself which is something I've struggled with. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that I do not want to be part of a forum that muzzles users for messaging mods. In total I sent 3 messages to that mod about my ban in the sub and over that they decided to perm ban me off the entire site indefinitely. I had the exact thought that you made at the begining of the video about corrupt power-bent officers.

Don't take this the wrong way because it's I don't wish to patronize or criticize anyone that feels stuck in a dark place, so here's the "but"... the confusion you're struggling with will only ever be perpetuated and exacerbated by shit like social media. I say social media instead of the internet as a whole because the well of knowledge and information available to tap into is an invaluable resource if you can navigate with discernment rather than temptation...
It almost can't even be called a tool or resource anymore with all the garbage sinkholes looking to spirit away your effort and steal your attention. That said, social media is just a drug. I don't know you or what you're going through but the internet is primarily just a ticket for escapism.
I know it probably seems impossible but there are so many people out there that are certain to accept you like you are. We're conditioned to bury our inner child. The internet is a surefire way to slit it's throat. Spend time with the people that can show you how to nurture that.

This Channel has been immensely eye-opening for me!! So fucking happy that I stumbled upon it - Can't believe the RUclips algorithm actually suggested one of your tiktok videos to me. Guess that's a good sign that youtube isn't completely fucked yet? Like - no doubt it's fucked, but your channel is still up and going sooo...thats something.
RUclips isn't totally trash yet mostly because of its sheer scale, and because censoring video content is a lot more technically challenging since AI's aren't nearly as good at picking up the content in a video versus text. In essence, it isn't that RUclips (Google) wouldn't be acting every bit as bad as reddit, it's just that it's a little more difficult for them.
The current? head of YT is a censoring lunatic who created a free speech group that then awarded her a prize for encouraging freedom of speech, while she in the other breath brags about how they have successfully removed millions of comments, accounts and videos from RUclips. In addition of course the comments are all censored by AI - if you say the wrong trigger words your comment is silently deleted. This also includes swearing now. And if your account gets banned, there is no appealing it. You can appeal but you will never get a reply. They also don't even bother telling you why you got banned, IE quoting the comment or whatever. If you leave 1000 comments and one of them gets you banned you have zero idea which one it was, which doesn't even serve the purpose of enforcing the rules since no one even knows what rule they broke or how.
@@larion2336 basically any comment you make where it warns you of your comment containing explicit content before posting, more than likely will get deleted and you dont even know it? I've seen that a lot where I post a comment and it might have a curse word in it or something and it will ask if I still want to post it, which I do anyways.
@@chefboiardeeznutz9881 I've never seen such a warning on youtube. Maybe you only get it on mobile? I'm on PC. My comments just get deleted silently all the time, usually if you talk about anything politically inconvenient to the leftist authoritarian wackjobs in Big Tech/Media/Govt.

RUclips is just as bad, curating echo chamber nonsense for idiots. You just don’t realize it because the primary focus is consumption, not interaction. So you can go from video to video, serving up hot doses of confirmation bias while you believe you’re being enlightened and educated. This channel does a good job of this. I enjoy a lot of this channel’s content but it’s clear it’s a channel for enthusiasts of victimhood and closeted maga sympathizers who use “freedom” as a battle cry to be dicks on the internet.
And that’s fine. To each their own. But don’t pretend like you walked away from the problem while actively using and engaging with people on RUclips. I suspect this channel would make an anti-RUclips video if it wouldn’t get stomped on by the algorithm.

I haven’t used Reddit in over a year, and have been happier since I deleted my profile and left it. The community is extremely toxic, you get downvoted to oblivion if you don’t follow a certain hivemind mentality on there, and it’s basically walking on eggshells on that entire site.
The mods have gotten vile on there, and too many rules are everywhere, no matter the subreddit it seems now too. You can’t even lurk in peace without them shoving a popup saying “Use the app!” And “you must be logged in to view this”. Screw that, and thank god for blockers.

I was on it before it was popular as well as twitter…… i never ever will understand how these apps root themselves so deeply into peoples brains. I guess I’ve always been a very grounded and practical person even as a child so views and individual ideals really don’t matter to me. I focus on my direct and immediate life mostly and strive to have fun essentially. So i find it very confusing how we’ve gotten here. I keep seeing comments like this. Don’t get me wrong i understand the overall psychology i guess my question is…… how….? How is it possible for humans to be so dense? It’s an app. It’s the internet. Real life has much more information to offer if one pays attention. Corporations run the world. Yes. So how can anyone believe holding them “accountable” on the apps they own will be effective?

I swear! I only go on for maybe subreddits involving art of a certain character, or Pathfinder 2E's reddit (community's great to the degree that it's unbelievable).
I noticed that upwards of 90% of my comments are disappeared, never receiving feedback, even though I know they would resonate with people. I thought it was because I was targeted individually, but watching your vid, I realize it's because I am thoughtful, and always look at things in a nuanced way. These heterodox ideas are anathema to the divide and conquer theme that's flourishing, while true humanity is trampled.

its insane, hearing your parents talk about the way things used to be when they were kids or in their 20s. now they are 30-40 years older. when i was a kid, the internet used to be fair game for everyone, and only 10-15 years later is when the censorship really became apparent. not only does society progress exponentially with technology, but in some aspects it will also deteriorate just as fast.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions
