Recently the dropper on my bike started to misbehave; it was only going up halfway or sometimes would not move at all. I ordered the replacement cartridge after some searching online and decided to make a tutorial from the replacement.
Hope you find this useful, if you have any questions leave them in the comments sections and I'll do my best to help out.
This is where I found the replacement cartridge (make sure to check length and year before you buy yours) :

Great. Thank you for the clarification. I overlooked your footnote comment. I'll look-up for the lighter grease you recommended for the cleaning and maintenance for my Giant Contact Switch Seatpost. I asked a tech at a bike store and he wasn't sure but recommended using a lubricant like an oil, and why not chain lubricating oil for the moving part. I can understand the post would call for water repellent grease too. Thank you again for the clarification.

Dude, thank you so much for this! Picked up some Slickoleum and serviced my dropper on my 2017 Trance. My cartridge is still good, just needed the innards cleaned and regreased (was kinda feeling gritty when I would drop it). Turns out V3 of the contact switch is very similar to your V2. It's sliding buttery smooth now!

I bought my Giant Seatpost SL on 03/2015 and rode it for about 8 months and then had my Giant Trance in the garage for over a year. I just got back into riding thsi past week and noticed the seat will not come back up as you describe. Of coutrse it now out of the 2 years warranty.
Is it possible that the old grease just dried up and greasing up the parts might help or is this cartrige expiring after 2 years even when not used?!
What grease is recommended for the maintenance and/or cartridge replacement?
    Great video.

Just got me a Giant Contact Dropperpost. Is it normal that when I push the button, I still need to give the saddle a jerk for it to go down after staying for a while, then after that, it goes down after each push of the button without any problem? but when it's been inactive for a while, it kinda seize up and need to be given a jerk for it to compress, otherwise it comes back up and every other thing is fine. Maybe I am not just used to dropperpost, but guys, is this normal?

    • @BlindstuffMTB
      @BlindstuffMTB  5 лет назад

If you can get it "unstuck" by sitting on it the first time. Yes it's kinda normal. If it needs more force than that, no. I'd recommend storing it in the extended position. You can also grease the post lightly with something like slick honey grease or sram butter to help.

Will I did ride my MTB sporadically until July 2016. Then it was kept in my car for three days when moving (heat exposure), then stored in indoor. The grease you used is the Parktool PPL1, if I can't get it what other grease you could recommend I could get from a HomeDepot or other Hardware store? Also, it is not a happy surprise if my cartridge needs replacement with the little use it had. Anyhow I'll take it apart next chance I get over the weekend. Thank you again for a detailed video.

Hey Donat, it may not be broken 100%, before buying a replacement, i'd try to clean and regrease it. Sram butter or Slick honey grease are good. There may be some home depot equivalent, but I really don't know.

I have the same version and cartridge type as in this video. Could find a replacement anywhere in the UK. Closest was Italy, and for £60, ~$90.
Ended up sending drawings of spec to a company i found on alibaba in China. I had them make me some up. They're heavier than the original cartridge, but I had them make them to withstand a higher load, I weigh about 220lb without kit. Got them to make them to 200kg - 440lb. If you read the small print for this post it stipulates not for riders of 75kg - 165lb.
The design of this cartridge isn't great. The tip held between the two pins holds all the riders weight and I think pinches on the release pin and makes it stick. The later models use a screw method to hold the cartridge and don't suffer the same issues.
Anyway. I ordered 5 of these cartridges from China cost me $22.
They weren't perfect, because of the extra load capacity they cartridge body was a little larger than the original. Meaning I lost a little of my drop. From 150mm to 125mm. However I'm still riding on my first one more than a year later.
And I've got 4 spares should I need them.

Its hard to know for sure, but, I'd assume that's the issue.
