Hi Michele - Could you please advise, re: mixed media: What fixative do you suggest to fix watercolor pencil, that hasn't been activated with water, that's been used on top of watercolors? (Dorland's Wax makes the non-activated watercolor pencil run.) Thank you!
Hi Michele! Absolutely love watercolor pencils, mostly use them for small details on still life watercolor paintings. I also find them more forgiving on less expensive papers. A friend of mine only uses watercolor pencils for his architectural drawings. Thank you for your wonderful video. Take care.
Love your beautiful flower painting. I just want to draw with watercolor pencils. I am trying yo learn how to use without watercolors themselves. I am glad to find your channel. 😊
I’m such a beginner (87 yrs. old in Texas) in watercolor and I think you are an outstanding instructor. Thank you. You make it look so easy and your reasoning how you make the colors work is so understandable.
So pleased I found you on RUclips. I'm 75 and have just started to learn how to draw. I found your tutorial most helpful and have learned a great deal, so thank you I am really enjoying myself now and my paintings are improving. Looking forward to watching more of your tutorials
I just LOVE my set of Aquarelles! I just HAD to have them. My dad surprised me with the beautiful wooden box of 76 pencils. I am playing around with them. I feel like a little kid again! I'm going to the hospital soon for major surgery and will be there for quite awhile--so I'll bring a few basic colors and my brushes there and see what I come up with.
After 2 years of watching many teachers, I feel I need to stick with you. I haven,'t done anything, I just keep watching more videos. You have a better way of reaching me. I still hesitate to pick up all the supplies I have accumulated. But I will.
I just finished my first painting done solely with watercolor pencils! I enjoyed the process. At the beginning of COVID, I started working with colored pencils and coloring books. I did 50 or 60 pages and although I had some watercolor pencils, it didn't occur to me to use them with water. I had done a significant number of watercolor paintings years ago solely with watercolor paints. I'm so grateful that you have shown me another way to make art.
This is by far the best tutorial on water colour pencils and combining them with water colour paints. Thank you for giving me the confidence to get started.
Pretty soon my brain will explode with all the new things I'm learning from you. Can't wait to get my new pencils (ones you had in description) and get started. Details are going to be easier and better than ever. Thank you, Michele.
Best tutorial I’ve seen on watercolor pencils. The thing that really clicked for me is how you demonstrated that the technique you use for swatching is also a great technique to use during the actual paintings. I know if I practice, I will understand the medium much better now. Thank you 🙏💙🌵
It’s a Sunday afternoon and it’s raining. I’m swatching watercolor pencils while I listened to the Broncos on the radio. Made the game loss more enjoyable. Thank you very much for your videos. ( The Broncos played at Wimbledon last year.)
I eased into watercolor with watercolor pencils, and still bring out them for drawing shapes and other effects combined with standard watercolors, as you gave examples. And yes I've dipped them into water directly to use in a background for mottled effects, applied to a wet area they can create lovely blasts of strong color for texture and multi-color areas. Though it tends to be fine textured, shaving a dry watercolor pencil into a wet area is another way to create texture...using an old nail file or rough sandpaper, the little flakes will make irregular splatter looking effects. The Derwent Inktense pencils are great for tree branches-limbs-stems, anytime you want a line that won't budge with additional layers or for finishing touches.
Thanx Michele, as a complete beginner I've always struggled with color swatching of my watercolor pencils, now I know why..and I realized the difference between ordinary pencils and artist pencils..my ones are so paler but anyway good for practice..😊🌹

Thank you for this video. I'm going back to watercolors, and am considering purchasing some sort of watercolor pencils. You're the first one who explained what Inktense is: INK. I had no idea! Enjoy watching you from the USA.
I've used watercolour pencils a few times before, but this was such a great refresher for basic watercolour techniques and such a great overview of how to use them to paint different subjects, both by themselves and with watercolour paints. Thank you so much for your informative and digestable videos. My question would be what brands would you recommend as good quality? I know about Derwent and Faber-Castell, but are there any others?
Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle are the Rolls Royce of watercolour pencils. Expensive, but you don’t need to buy a set. Unfortunately UK art shops don’t seem to have loose stock….but Jackson’s and Ken Bromley do sell them individually. So much pigment, you only need a few basic colours as you can blend them.
