      The falsetto voice sections instantly date the song to the 50s/early 60s falsetto songs. But the only way you'd know it is if you've listened to 50s/60s songs like that. It's a very simple tune, with one verse repeated after the unique monophonic synthesizer solo - it's simple, and very very catchy.
      You really only need to hear it one time to like the song. It's a combination of not having to think too hard about what's being conveyed, the great vocals, the rhythm section, and the unique synthesizer.
      The song was in the film 'American Graffiti' which was a major hit film.
      I wish Del could have been a sort of 'Tom Petty' type of performer, turning out lots of hits, and had a more solid, decades-long career. Del was very talented - great songwriter, great performer.
      This tune will be remade by lots of bands for decades - it has appeal that is beyond the time period it first came out. Great songs are usually timeless.

    Not long after Del Shannon died my father told me the story of when this song had come out in the late winter of 1961. He heard it for the first time in a diner in Ann Arbor Michigan just after his girlfriend at the time had broken up with him. As he walked back to his dorm at the University of Michigan which was a mile or so away from the diner, it was pouring rain on him and he was reminded of the song. Before he knew it a car drove by and happened to go through a HUGE puddle and it splashed him like a tidal wave. Quite the kicker on a tough night but he chuckled when he told me 'at least that made me forget about the breakup for a while' as all he could think about after that was getting to shelter to get dried and warmed. That summer, he would meet my mother and they married in 1965. They were together all of those years until my dad passed last year due to a heart attack (his second, the first being in 2003). He was just short of his 81st birthday. My mom's doing okay for the most part all things considered, but it's always tough. Especially when you've been with someone for 62 years and married for 58 of them. Rest in peace Dad, rest in peace Del.

The cassettes hardly ever made it to the family stereo because they were always in my walkman. I wish Del could've known how much he meant to people before he took his life. He was one of the only of his time to make songs about breakups and the negative sides to romance sound so cheerful. Back then, from what I can gather, it was either happy love songs or sad breakup songs. But with Del, he could extract the good from the bad. I mean, his biography says that his sadder 'love' songs came from his experiences being dismissed in high school. This song brings all the sad parts of romance into a fantastic release of sound and emotion. This is a song someone could listen to and cry tears of sadness or tears of joy. One of the most wonderful songs of all time made by one of the most wonderful singers of all time. Thank you for your music, Del. Rest in peace.

    Just imagine yourself driving westbound from Albuquerque toward LA in a ragtop pulled down as the sun is setting and hearing this song on the radio. Actually, it doesn't even have to be at that location. The point is, this song has a certain ability to bring forth reflection of ones deeds and goals at the same time. There are, I am sure other songs that do the same. But, for me, this song is beautiful, brings me to a certain reflection that I truly enjoy. RIP, Mr. Shannon. How could a person produce a soul touching ballad as this, yet still be so tormented himself. I am so sorry for your passing.

This is all we listened to in the truck together for as long as I remember. When my dad gave me his truck when I was 16, I kept the Del Shannon tape in the deck, and it never left. It reinforced my relationship with my father and our bond. Sadly someone decided to steal the truck years later and I lost the tape. I always wished I could get the tape back, as much as the truck, as it was such a significant memory of my dad. Definitely some great catchy music! RIP to those we have lost. They are never forgotten and music such as this keeps them even more alive in our hearts.

    I love this song, always have. I was in a club in Boston called The Other Side, in The Combat Zone, I think around 1971. The club was totally bizarre and great fun, full of tranvestites, ladies of the night, gays, straights and an overall array of people on the fringe, like myself. The band that night was Andy Paley and The Sidewinders who I came to see. In the wee hours Andy Paley, all sweaty and shirtless says, "Ladies and gentlemen we have a special guest in the audience here tonight who is going to play a song for us." And up to the stage comes Del Shannon and does an incredibly spirited version of Runaway with The Sidewinders backing. I about passed out. Such a great memory even 40 plus years later. Thank you Del.

      +Michael de simone Interesting comments. What the hell was Del Shannon doing in the Zone? I got a liberal education in the Combat Zone as a young guy . Never went into The Other Side or Jacque's, just not my scene.

    • @Mickey88De
      @Mickey88De 8 лет назад +5

      Hello there friend. I have no idea what he was doing there, only that The Sidewinders seemed as surprised to see him as was the audience. But I doubt that Del was gay, I'm not, nor were most of my friends there. The Other Side was not a "gay bar" so much as it was just a crazy place to see the other side of life. I saw my first transsexual person ever there, a beautiful woman doing a striptease in a cage suspended from the ceiling. Boy was I stunned when she dropped the sarong from her waist. Made quite an impression on a 19 year old kid from New Jersey....

      @sandsoftime1954 8 лет назад +2

      Michael de simone Your a Hoot you are ! You know I got to tell you, that I heard some excellent bands, mostly blues players back then. It was the end of the sixties and as far as I was concerned it was the last gasp for vaudeville. When you went in these clubs, the show usually had a comedian / announcer a live band and of course the girls. If I really wanted to see different forms of life, the Hillbilly Ranch in Park Square was the place to be on a Saturday night. I don't know how I made it out alive.

    • @Mickey88De
      @Mickey88De 8 лет назад +3

      Lol, thanks. Yes the music scene in Boston was terrific back in the day. It may still be. The J Giles Band played a few times at my school, as well as Albert King and of course The Sidewinders, which was how I wound up at The Other Side for the first time. Andy Paley went on to have an incredible music career as a collaborator and a producer. Brian Wilson called him the best collaborator he ever worked with. I saw George Benson at some little club whose name escapes me at the moment, ah --The Boston Tea Party -- although I never made it to the Hillbilly Ranch. But seeing Del Shannon impromptu was the highlight.

      Michael de simone Interesting times for sure, a lifetime ago. The years fly by in the blink of an eye. Where'd you go to school ? You might have seen Benson at Paul's Mall or Johnny D's in Somerville. Were you a Tea Partyer ? I saw Geils,Canned Heat, Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac , The Chambers Bros.and Ultimate Spinach there. Decent shows for about $3.50 or $4.00. The ones I remember.

      As a lifelong musician (Keys, guitar, bass, banjo and mandolin) I gotta tell ya that the keyboard solo in the middle is a sonofabitch to play, especially if you're cursed with short fat fingers like mine. The crossovers and finger slides will make you crazy. But it is still (And I'm old enough to remember when this was new), one of the most satisfying pieces of rock history to play well. R.I.P. Del and "Well done" to everybody else on the record.

  • @jeffreysundby5990

    This is one of the most unique songs to be recorded during that time period. What an amazing voice! When you listen to the instrumental solo in the middle, you can almost hear TV shows like the "Lost In Space" theme song in there. That was during a time when pop music was "fun" and inspirational at the same time, with shadows of the 1950s bands and singers in most songs and before the 1960s protest music and Vietnam became so dominant. Del was a true pioneer of music and influenced great talents, like Tom Petty and the Beatles and so many more. Rest in peace, Del. You are loved.

      +Brian Powers I agree completely. I just made a bunch of CDs with my favorite artists from this era. And it's not just the music, it's the technology they had back then. I am now obsessed with records, and playing them on my grandma's HI-FI. And guess what? I'm 14.

      Well, seeing how they never had any sorts of computer equipment to enhance their voices or their instruments, they had to be naturally talented.
      Unfortunately, being a music star and being talented is no longer synonymous.

      I find it interesting that people who make recordings are no longer called "musicians" or "entertainers." They are now "artists." Somehow, most of what I hear doesn't sound all that much like art.
