    I live in Bournemouth & although the shops are still quite good although not quite as good as they were it’s a nice beach & there are even some restaurants. I love it. Great place to live

    The authentic Bournemouth still in Hampshire (just) when filming took place in the summer of 73 full of charm and charisma and happy folk and then Dorset took over built the poorly planned Wessex way and everything else since has gone downhill fast and now even worse as BCP starts to throw its weight around this once Beautiful town!!! Alas 😎☹️

    I well remember it in the 60s/early 70s, some of my family were from there so no hotels for us, learnt to swim in the sea there and playing in the stream running through the Winter Gardens with the other kids, great memories.

      I am accustomed with seeing travel programmes that spruik the tourist hot spot, but it was a surprise to hear her chastise the common British holiday makers on how untidy they were.
      Might have been justified, just an odd time to tell us.

      Yep, though the only reason beaches are clean today is that Councils employ an army of people to pick up rubbish, just like the streets and the fines for littering. Otherwise, I think people would be just as lazy today. But it's like dog do do (as it were!!) it hard to believe the streets used to have it everywhere!! ugh!

    I arrived there in the late 70s and stayed 20 years. Whenever I visit now it is a sorry sight. M&S, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Beales all gone and the town centre full of homeless drug addicts as a consequence of all the drug rehab halfway houses in Boscombe. Pretty tragic.

    I left school in 1974. It was my hometown until 1991. I am now in Australia living near Noosa in Queensland. I hope to return for a visit soon.

    That 'exhibition of seashells' was more of a model village made of shells you could walk round. I can image the owner seeing this on the telly would have been tearing their hair out: "Now all the tourists will think it's just shells - no one will come to that!!!" 😫

      Ah right, that sounds a bit more interesting than a load of shells on pinboards....not sure todays kids would be pacified by an open top bus though for any longer than ten minutes.

    I used to love the old Victorian Ice Rink and the Pier Approach Swimming pool where they had the ''Big Splash'' show with the high divers and the beautiful UV lights that made the swimmers light up it was magical. Sadly these are no longer there Nor is the Winter Gardens nor the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The Pavilion Theatre is still there. The Shell house gone. I guess it has changed with the times.

    Nearly 50 years on ... the rubbish left on the beach is horrendous - it looks like a municipal rubbish landfill most mornings. The zoo, ice rink and shell-house are all long gone. At least the pier is still there, but a family ticket is £4.40.
    oh, and most of the shops are shut.

      @@Sidneyyoungblood75 true! I remember as a kid it was a job to scramble up the stone retaining wall to the promenade. Today the sand is within a foot of the top...and the beach is much wider in places 😊

    The interviews weren't "on the spot" as it seems. Everybody featured was asked in advance if they would be willing to speak on camera for the show before it was filmed, and Judith would do a rehearsal with them first. Even that guy's dog had to sign a consent form.
