I had such mix feeling watching it!! How could they just stole stuff like that and proudly display the stolen items in their museum??? How many civilians were killed robbed behind all these treasures.... 💔
Not only that, but they made it a habit of burning down palaces and gardens after they looted and marched their army out. The Yuanming Garden was written to be so beautiful, now we could only look at the ruines and imagine. The Forbidden city is not the largest and most beautiful, cause it’s like the emperor’s business office, a place for work, but it’s all that’s left.
If you want your artifacts back you have to Lobby the Prime Minister, the British Museum is run by 25 trustees, some of them sit in the unelected House of Lords some are lawyers, some are of other professions, if you Google British Museum trustees you can see who you have to lobby. Good luck with that one.
Man it’s sad these were stolen from the summer palace most likely. The silver lining is that these are well housed and conserved and accessible to the rest of the world. Yet my wish is that as the whole world modernize and start to understand the value of the relics build proper museums to house them, these should all be repatriated, perhaps reconstructions can stand in place of the authentic relics as they are repatriated.
Unfortunately this is not the case. Most of the Chinese treasures are locked away where no one can see them. The public display contains only a fraction of the stolen treasures. And not all of the items are well-housed. Even in the public display, many items are sitting in the open air. Not to mention you can see that many of the treasures has already been broken up (likely to make them easier for the thieves to transport), such as the tiles with dragons and lotuses, where you can clearly see the tiles have been cut up into pieces 😔 And the exhibition is not set up in a way which the Chinese find respectful. Many of their most significant items are in crowded cabinets with no information about them. Hope the treasures can be returned to their homes soon 😢
