How to deal with rejection of _all_ varieties: make it funny. I'm not saying you have to be a full on clown and turn everything into a stand-up joke routine. But sometimes even going that far can help immensely. Allow me to give you an example: I've been self-teaching the piano for a little over a year now. My friend heard me practicing and wanted me to try learning a little tune to play for her first dance at her wedding. I had a month to learn it. I was genuinely excited about the prospect of giving my near and dear friend a very lovely and special gift for her wedding. There were certainly times throughout that month where I felt wholly incapable of delivering, but I pulled through. I hit a point where I could comfortably play through the whole thing, practically with my eyes closed. I was ready and I was gonna smash it! The day of the wedding comes, I noodle around a bit on the piano at the venue before the festivities begin just to get warmed up to the way it feels. Then a couple of hours later it's my time to shine. I sat down and started playing....aaaaaaaand forgot what I was supposed to play. In that moment it felt like I had never even seen or touched a piano before. This is the first time in my life I've ever played in front of so many people. I've never taken lessons, I've never performed in any recitals. Heck, I've never even really shared anything I've played outside of showing some clips to some close friends. It was a very alien and new experience for me. I played the first few notes and completely forgot what the next chord was meant to be. It's like all of that information just left my brain. I played a very dissonant chord, and just started cracking up and I said "I'm sorry, it's my first time." The entire crowd busted out laughing, and it made everything so much less tense and serious. I fired it up again, and ONCE AGAIN I still forgot what the chord was supposed to be, so I said "Ya know, this usually doesn't happen." Once again, my faux pas was met with genuine laughter. I was eventually able to get into the groove of things and play it, although I did mess up at a few parts near the end. However, the point is, what would have been a completely nerve wracking experience for me turned into something that people will look back on and laugh about for most likely the rest of their lives. My friend will have a wedding experience that is unlike nobody else's, all because of me. That's _very_ cool and it's something that I cherish. Genuine laughter implies a certain level of confidence you have for yourself that can just put all of it on display in that specific moment. Getting rejected and finding a way to laugh about it, a way that is _organic_ and _genuine_ to who you are and how you present yourself, is the most surefire way to make it feel like less of an issue.

How to deal with rejection of _all_ varieties: make it funny. I'm not saying you have to be a full on clown and turn everything into a stand-up joke routine. But sometimes even going that far can help immensely. Allow me to give you an example:
I've been self-teaching the piano for a little over a year now. My friend heard me practicing and wanted me to try learning a little tune to play for her first dance at her wedding. I had a month to learn it. I was genuinely excited about the prospect of giving my near and dear friend a very lovely and special gift for her wedding. There were certainly times throughout that month where I felt wholly incapable of delivering, but I pulled through. I hit a point where I could comfortably play through the whole thing, practically with my eyes closed. I was ready and I was gonna smash it!
The day of the wedding comes, I noodle around a bit on the piano at the venue before the festivities begin just to get warmed up to the way it feels. Then a couple of hours later it's my time to shine. I sat down and started playing....aaaaaaaand forgot what I was supposed to play. In that moment it felt like I had never even seen or touched a piano before. This is the first time in my life I've ever played in front of so many people. I've never taken lessons, I've never performed in any recitals. Heck, I've never even really shared anything I've played outside of showing some clips to some close friends. It was a very alien and new experience for me.
I played the first few notes and completely forgot what the next chord was meant to be. It's like all of that information just left my brain. I played a very dissonant chord, and just started cracking up and I said "I'm sorry, it's my first time." The entire crowd busted out laughing, and it made everything so much less tense and serious. I fired it up again, and ONCE AGAIN I still forgot what the chord was supposed to be, so I said "Ya know, this usually doesn't happen." Once again, my faux pas was met with genuine laughter.
I was eventually able to get into the groove of things and play it, although I did mess up at a few parts near the end. However, the point is, what would have been a completely nerve wracking experience for me turned into something that people will look back on and laugh about for most likely the rest of their lives. My friend will have a wedding experience that is unlike nobody else's, all because of me. That's _very_ cool and it's something that I cherish.
Genuine laughter implies a certain level of confidence you have for yourself that can just put all of it on display in that specific moment. Getting rejected and finding a way to laugh about it, a way that is _organic_ and _genuine_ to who you are and how you present yourself, is the most surefire way to make it feel like less of an issue.
