- We dive into the horrific depths of Hive Secundus as the Malstrain Genestealers take on the Spyre Hunters and Van Saar Tek-Hunters in our unboxing and review of the latest Starter Set for Necromunda!
In this video we check out the contents, take a look through the full rulebook and even paint up the entire contents of the box!
Massive thanks to Games Workshop for sending us a free review copy to check out on the site - we also have a full written review over at www.spruesandbrews.com

Great paint jobs. Thanks for the video.
I didn’t realize how big the Malstrains were.
They are big models!!
The set looks fantastic I can't wait to get and build mine. Its a shame they included a paper mat rather than card though, I would have preferred to pay a bit more for a more sturdy mat that would last longer.
Yeah, I'm lucky enough to have Zone Mortalis tiles, but hopefully the included mat holds up over multiple games!
I doubt the added cost going from a poster to cardboard exceeds a pound per box. I dont think they made this decision to save cost, but rather to sell you upgrades down the line.
@@SpruesAndBrews one good option would be to mount it on MDF or something, but annoyingly from the video it looks like they printed 4 different layouts on the 2 mats, so you'd need to track down a second set in order to do all of them.
The Tek Hunter page listed some post battle actions they can do. Does the book elaborate what those are?
It does indeed, essentially they are able to craft weapons and armour, search for archeotech or do medical actions - talk about it a little more in our written review too on www.spruesandbrews.com
How does movement work? Do you use the squares on the printed map or do models move using measurements and rulers?
It uses the full Necromunda rules, so you move in inches equal to your movement stat
Having received this today, on day of release, I was super disappointed to discover that the cards for the Van Saar faction are NOT in this set. Its Genestealers, brood scum, loot and scenario specific effects cards. Nothing for the Van Saar. Is this GW's way of making you buy the cards for them as a separate thing? Their rules are in the book, but missing the cards for these minis in the box left a sour taste. Also, the card stock on the reference sheets is flimsy. And if you look at the amount of terrain here, only doors, not columns (not that it claimed to have so), but overall it feels like GW skimped on this release, especially when compared to other Necromunda boxsets.
So you get a big stack of blank cards which are used for the Van Saar and the Spyre Hunter - as there's lots of different ways to load them out this leaves you free yo build them however you want, otherwise you'd have fixed load outs and less options
@@SpruesAndBrews that is true, the blank cards allow customisation and can be written on for your exact loadouts. But same goes with the Brood Scum which have cards, so it's it's confusing why there aren't set cards for the Van Saar options in the contruction manual
Excellent paintjob! and great review, can't wait to get mine & build/paint/play it !
Thanks!!
Looks good. Ordered mine this morning. Nice paintjobs.
Thanks!! Hope you enjoyed the video!
SPRUES AND BREWS!!! I love the name! Seriously that sucks me right in. Nice review.
However, this box is too expensive for what you get. $10 worth of plastic, some cardboard, a book, some paper. And no real terrain! Just terrain bits! The price tag is just too much these days. TBH, I have to admit that most of it will sit unpainted/unbuilt adding to my PILE OF SHAME. I just cannot afford to do that these days. Not when GW keeps deleting and changing stuff every few years.
Great review though.
