There's "we're making a fantasy so we're just going to grab a mishmash of what-have-you, who cares about the historical sources" and there's "we're making a fantasy, and we have a rich tapestry of actual historical designs & concepts to work with so let's make the best use we can of all that." Clearly, these folks chose the latter, and bless them for it.
That dagger brooch looks cool, but something that wide looks like it would shred a cloak in a few uses unless you made eyelets/buttonholes to pass it through. Did he get that scar across his neck trying to put it on? I wonder if it is a flamboyant relation of the Tara brooch. Love the episode. Someone complaining about a lack of historical accuracy in a game that is fantasy out of the gate says more about them than it does about the game. Thanks for reviewing it for what it is.
Always a delight to see you! I even watch the gamer stuff, and I don't give two hoots about gaming. You just review costumes so well! (And there you go--not horned helms, just helms with a hole for your horns!)
Since I know SQUAT about Wales, perhaps a fast "Cliff notes" version then a longer deeper dive for folks that are "further ahead!" ? (Blame the public schools in USA. They taught squat about other countries when I went to school. I am 60. I HOPE that has changed! Due to the internet, the world is smaller !)
Well *I'd* like a video about 'cantref', and the wider topic of how land was divided and administered. And how that's reflected in language. I'd like that very much!
I suspect the dagger brooch might be based somewhat loosely from Irish brooches, because some of those were pretty long and pointy to the point where I wouldn't be hugely surprised if they were used for stabbing from time to time
was about to say this! my da has one of those massive irish stabby brooches that he uses to keep his massive brat (that my mother was awarded her laurels [peerage for artists/craftspeople/scholars in the sca] in fiberarts for the dying/spinning/weaving of!) on! he keeps a wine cork on the end so no one behind him accidentally gets an eye put out

Mate, i’d listen to a vid of you breaking down old welsh words till i’m old and grey like merlin. Would also love anything about welsh/old english folks lore, maybe something about what folks get wrong all the time. Always stoked for the uploads
I‘m not into gaming and have never heard of the Banner Saga, but you made the whole review eminently watchable nonetheless. Wonderfully nuanced, and you know we’re all suckers for a good bit of nuance.
When you said you were going to do a Banner Kit Review, I thought you were going to review some banners that people brought with them to reenactments and what they should look out for, ect. I was really looking forward to that. This was fine, too. I don't play videogames, really, but I kinda like looking at them, hearing about them. They are an interesting part of our culture and always a fun place to see new art (storytelling and graphics). I could definitely see come nice graphics in this game!
I haven't played these specific games, but I'm digging the buff lady in the white apron dress. Such a good design on several levels. I'm still waiting for the chocobo though--
I spend way too much time playing video games, but I'd never heard of these. I really love the 80's fantasy cartoon vibe of the art direction- definite shades of the messy Disney Black Cauldron adaptation and the 80's D&D cartoon, amongst others. It really tugs on my childhood nostalgia strings. The fact that they've mixed in real historical influences as well is actually really impressive.
Now I want a Asterix and Obelix review even more :D (yes I know this comics is meant to be silly and not historicaly accurate, that's what it make it fun ;) )
I think I heard this in a video about the game Outward: If you are looking for realism in a fantasy game, you are obviously not looking at how realistic dragons or centaurs are. You are looking at if it feels right and if what you are doing makes sense. Banner Saga does an incredible job here. The cosyness of the buildings, the costumes, but also the frustration and hardship along the course of the game pulls you right in. Liked it very much!
I don’t play video games or even know what this game is, but I am watching and commented for Jimmy and FOR THE ALGORITHM!! Though I do love learning more about historic dress. Jimmy is one of my go-to “chaotic good” RUclipsrs.
I have started tablet weaving because of this channel. Now, everytime I watch a video, I have to put in a few rows on my Oseberg band! Would there be enough content for a video on viking/norse tablet weaving?
As someone who is working on a Norse caftan/coat thing that’s decorated with Oseberg ribbons I wove myself, I salute you, fellow tablet weaver! It’s so much fun, isn’t it? I still think that whoever invented it was a genius, it’s like magic, you just twist a few tablets and then a ribbon is formed!
This was fun! I also really enjoy fantasy games with historically-inspired settings and designs. It's cool to recognize small design choices that are inspired by actual artifacts because the creators have Done Their Research. But, it's also good to appreciate and recognize where the creators have taken some artistic liberties or made something deliberately anachronistic to make a specific statement about a character or their culture. I haven't played the Banner Saga, but I didn't feel like I needed to understand the game to enjoy this video. I would definitely watch stuff with a similar premise if the opportunity and inspiration presents itself. ^_^
Loved this episode. And I just wanna say thank you for the 'heimdall loves rainbows' shirt. I wear it on viking larps in the build up phase and it's a good detector for friendly people.
Just before I went to bed! When first saw Banner in the thumbnail I pictured a 3m by 2m flag with a hand embroidered raven on it. I'm not a big gamer but might have a look at Banner. As always diolch yn fawr iawn😁
So the giants are cross dressing blacksmiths? It is usually hammered in that one broach is a man and 2 broaches is a woman when found in a grave. (Until they look at the pelvis and get confused)
jimmy talking about the banner saga, AND material culture?! holidays came early for me! it's one of my favorite game series, and yeah i can relate to the 'heart being in bits' feeling by the end hahah i also recommend the companion novel, "The Gift of Hadrborg" i believe it's called; i really enjoyed it! love this video! 💖 😄 and heck yeah i'd love to see a video on cantrefs!!
This was a interesting video! The Banner Saga games were great, had played the 1st one years ago and FINALLY got through 2 & 3 during the lockdown (that last march...damn!)...the music was also something else which really blew me away too!
I know virtually nothing about video game culture and have only heard of the big names (Fortnite, Call of Duty etc.) so it's really cool to know that these kind of artsy video games are being made. Also, yeah, I know it's RUclips culture to roast whatever you're reviewing, but it's quite refreshing to hear a more nuanced (and calm) discussion of something.
Quite like this laid-back video, even though I've never heard of this game, don't game, and thus will never play this game. The graphics are definitely pretty.
Oh this is such a nice topic! I’ve not played the games (I’m terrible at the genre unfortunately) but I do love their style so much, so nice to see a good dive into their inspirations. To add another game suggestion, Pentiment came out last year is set in 16th century Germany and is fantastically well researched and I’d love to hear your take on some of the costumes. Also there is a (optional) sequence in the game where you get to use a drop spindle…how’s THAT gamified material culture. 😊
Always exciting to see a new video appear! I very much enjoy the relaxing sit and chats, and even though I havent played any of the games I always love your analysis of game art/costuming. Looking forward to the next one! (Ps. please can we have more Arthurian videos? I sit in hope for the Merlin video!)
I'd highly recommend the Bloodsworn Saga books by John Gwynne. It's a fantasy story set in a post pseudo-Ragnarok type land and Gwynne's background as a Viking reenactor really comes to the fore. The clothing, weapons and references to actual Old Norse culture are pretty spot on (first time I ever saw the word winnegas tbh). Plus, no one writes battle scenes like Gwynne.
This kind of video is really fun! I find comparisons with existing media a really good way to learn about and practice my understanding of historical fashion. I've been slowly watching Vinland Saga with my best friend and having fun ribbing every time I see something they shouldn't have or complimenting every time I can tell they did their research. (I was losing my mind about Snake's sword about four episodes before they revealed where he came from)
I bought The Banner Saga last year because the art was gorgeous but haven't played it yet and you've absolutely sold me on playing through all the games this winter! I really enjoyed the video and would positively die of happiness if you did one on historical land organization 😍
It's funny that you've been asked to review it for years, and I only started playing the series this summer. I played through the first, and once I finished it, immediately started playing again to get a different storyline. I'm now halfway through the second and it does not disappoint.
I have a question. How did viking women keep their boobs up? Did they wear thing similar to bras or did they bind? Serious question. I can't figure out what is historically accurate or even historically plausible. Hars to do reenactment without the proper undergarb.
Chainmail bikinis. Bare midriff, bare legs, chainmail bikini top, dark eyeshadow, blonde hair, modern depilation. You'll be 100/100 for accuracy. Source: I live in Hollywood. You're welcome. 😁
Look into the Lengberg Castle bra, it's quite possible that's bras existed in various forms long before the modern (re)invention of them. There are also ways to make something like the modern bandue "bra" as well.
I've almost finished my first week of med school and your videos are a brilliant way to just tune out for a minute. Even though I don't play many video games, your videos are always fascinating! I've not missed a single one, and I bet that these will get me through med school (if my flatmates will put up with me info dumping about your videos!)
Like deployed, video played once muted while I was fixing breakfast, engagement comment typed out, am ready to watch this with a comfy cup of tea. Thank you !
I love the Banner Saga art style. It's simultaneously kept simple and yet plays around with fantastical designs. It makes it more interesting as a fantasy setting imo, because 100% historical accuracy is, as you say, not needed in a history-inspired fantasy game. And it's also a smart way to make the characters stand out a bit more and give them some unique traits and designs to look at. It's just yummie. Instead of slapping leather and furs on everything and everyone, it seems like they have the baseline of simple cloth clothing and then get playful with it.
11:17 I wonder if that particular centaur character's design was taking specific inspiration from and/or paying homage to Keira Knightley's character from the King Arthur movie back from the mid-2000s (2004?), rather than generic "Celtic" culture stereotypes.
The Banner Saga definitely highlights different cultures' art in costumes and architecture and the banners in the series' title, and it really makes you want to protect these people and their imperiled world from the dangers that threaten to exterminate them and their cultures and histories. The beauty in these games work to help inspire the feelings the creators are trying to inspire in players, and this really worked on me at least! Contrast a lot of Viking media that make everything dark and gross to emphasize how gritty, serious, and grimdark their settings are. Because the past was totally like that, and it definitely makes it historically authentic. Or because making things gross is probably why Game of Thrones was popular, right?
Oh I remember the art of this game; gorgeous stuff! I wanted to play it simply to enjoy the art. Stunning backgrounds that reminded me of Disney's Sleeping Beauty mixed with Prairie style (long)houses. The Dredge look like Jack Kirby-style Celestials. Also adore that the characters are done with gorgeous, multicolored line art with flat colors :: chef's kiss :: Thanks for reminding me about this game and validating that it's not complete bunkum. And yes, bore us silly with cantref talk.
I've played through the first one, absolutely loved it, haven't got around to 2 and 3 yet, yeah the art and the costuming was great, gave a real sorta northern European mythic feel, and yeah, the dredge are cool gribly beasties, and 100% more mythological fantasy whatsits but oh I love them so much
I loved this video! And I learnt about a beautiful game that _I absolutely must play_ Awesome as always Jimmy, and that video idea is intriguing (please make it)
I frickin love this channel, I’m glad I found it again. I was looking at mead recipes and stumbled on the Sahti video from two years ago. Came over to the channel, saw he’s still uploading and subscribed. Not gonna lose this guy to the algorithm again.
Must give this a go, looks beautiful. On a gaming note, have you played Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice? A Celtic warrior travels to Hel to save her lover from, well, Hel. It’s really rather good and might be up your avenue.
I enjoyed the video 😁 But definitely, I would be interested in the Welsh words you mentioned... I knew teulu (my Welsh spelling is awful🤔) and the word for land division I did not know. Oh, teach great one!
Had never heard of this game series, and am finding the art style fascinating. It looks very inspired by TV cartoons of the 1980s, as well as movie animation of Disney's Black Cauldron era...? Art-wise, I would never have guessed it came out in the late 2010s!! Although it does sound like the storyline & gameplay do reflect the way Viking-inspired and D&D-adjacent content have both been having a big moment over the past 5-10yrs?
@@TheWelshViking That makes so much sense!! It even has that certain charm which a lot of his work always seemed to have, cf. when you were commenting about the details of some of the characters...?
Fortuitous timing to see this just came out; I was looking at making a Rook cosplay for halloween and ended up back at your 'how to wear a cloak' video to get a baseline in trying to figure out what to do with that double-pinned cloak he wears. Do you have any thoughts/ideas on how quite that sort of cloak would work? My best guesses are either it's got a pair of 'arms' perpendicular to the main cut that jut out where the hood meets the main body of the cloak, and these fold over each other and fasten at the base of the other; or, it's more a poncho-type cloak where the front normally would hang mid-chest but he has the front gathered and pinned up higher. Would you have any better ideas how one might put together a cloak that works like his with that double-pin which leaves a decent gap between the vertical drape of the edges?
Hello love the content yet another great video! If you we to do another game “reaction” I would suggest bad north as on the surface it is simple but if look past that there is lots of Norse influence and Anglo-Saxon
In theory, the sun WILL stop moving in the sky one day, when the earth becomes tidally locked to the sun (as the moon is to us now), which is inevitable, but also very very very very far away. I've played BS2 mostly, but not as much as I should because the combat is HARD. Diolch am y stori
i think, to an extent, you have to give allowances for artistic license and sometimes people kind of forget that. one of the things that crops up in modern artistic depictions constantly are them dummy 18th century turndown boots, because thats just shorthand for ye olde times, and its annoying but i get it, broadly. smearing everything in dirt and shite as shorthand for medieval so the lower common denominator understands is dumb and unnecessary but stuff like banner sagas cool fantasy elements are a neat aesthetic, i think its fair to give them a pass on that given that its literally a fantasy setting (i dont think i ever actually got around to playing the third one lmao, i should really go back and finish the trilogy)
There's "we're making a fantasy so we're just going to grab a mishmash of what-have-you, who cares about the historical sources" and there's "we're making a fantasy, and we have a rich tapestry of actual historical designs & concepts to work with so let's make the best use we can of all that." I was having a really tough time at work, and this really helped lift my mood. Thank you. I’m so glad to see this series getting covered too!
Hey, glad to have helped salvage a crappy day, mate :)
Any chance of a tour of Edwardian Jimmy's wardrobe?
This video is a great advert for the game series. What a very enjoyable video.

I suspect the dagger brooch might be based somewhat loosely from Irish brooches, because some of those were pretty long and pointy to the point where I wouldn't be hugely surprised if they were used for stabbing from time to time
If I wore a brooch like that, I’d want the pointy part to be able to be used as a small knife.

Please make the video on medieval Welsh terminology. There's not enough of this kind of thing because of English 'wash out' 😢
I second this!
I think it's nice that you highlight games with medieval/ viking related content. It deserves to be better known.

Because the past was totally like that, and it definitely makes it historically authentic. Or because making things gross is probably why Game of Thrones was popular, right?
I bought this series on sale and never got around to actually playing it. I'll have to give them a try next lol
I've played through the first one, absolutely loved it, haven't got around to 2 and 3 yet, yeah the art and the costuming was great, gave a real sorta northern European mythic feel, and yeah, the dredge are cool gribly beasties, and 100% more mythological fantasy whatsits but oh I love them so much
yes, enjoyed indeed.
Outstanding video, top-notch vibes. You nailed it again, Jimmy. Thanks 🖤
I loved this video! And I learnt about a beautiful game that _I absolutely must play_
Awesome as always Jimmy, and that video idea is intriguing (please make it)
I frickin love this channel, I’m glad I found it again. I was looking at mead recipes and stumbled on the Sahti video from two years ago. Came over to the channel, saw he’s still uploading and subscribed. Not gonna lose this guy to the algorithm again.
Definitely enjoyed, would be keen on more in a similar vein!
Yes, I enjoyed it very much. Thank you.
Agree with that. Welsh has always been both a mystery and something I wanted to know about (and speak, perhaps). Les
Absolutely, and the art was apparently inspired by Don Bluth!
@@TheWelshViking That makes so much sense!! It even has that certain charm which a lot of his work always seemed to have, cf. when you were commenting about the details of some of the characters...?
Lovely video! would love to hear about cantref (cantrefs?)
I don’t play video games but it’s interesting to see a review regardless. Always good to see you!
Come now James don't tell me that you never played hide the sausage outdoors !
Hello love the content yet another great video! If you we to do another game “reaction” I would suggest bad north as on the surface it is simple but if look past that there is lots of Norse influence and Anglo-Saxon
SO good to "see" you, Jimmy. LOVE your takes on things.
Thanks, Jimmy. The game does look very nice ❤
Edit: it is lovely to have a review that went well and that you enjoyed without Rage lol
i think, to an extent, you have to give allowances for artistic license and sometimes people kind of forget that. one of the things that crops up in modern artistic depictions constantly are them dummy 18th century turndown boots, because thats just shorthand for ye olde times, and its annoying but i get it, broadly. smearing everything in dirt and shite as shorthand for medieval so the lower common denominator understands is dumb and unnecessary but stuff like banner sagas cool fantasy elements are a neat aesthetic, i think its fair to give them a pass on that given that its literally a fantasy setting
(i dont think i ever actually got around to playing the third one lmao, i should really go back and finish the trilogy)
More of these review-type videos please Jimmy!
That looks like a game my hubby would definitely enjoy. Thanks for another wonderful video review. Take care.
Looks like a fun game.
A nice bit of history mixed with a good game recommendation? Don't mind if I do.
I love Banner Saga! Thank you for this insightful review. :-)
Do I spy a WW1 collarless wool shirt by any chance? 😄Great video as usual!
