It’s truly the end of an era. No more glittery runway walks; no more angel wings. After nearly 25 years, The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been canceled.
What’s up guys, I’m Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and while this may seem like bombshell news, the lingerie company has been struggling for years to keep up with customer demands, both in the store and on the runway. Here’s what’s been going on:
To put it simply… customers aren’t pouring into the stores anymore for a number of reasons. L Brands, the parent company that owns Victoria’s Secret, released a statement announcing that the iconic fashion show was canceled for 2019. They addressed customer’s dissatisfaction head on.
"We'll be communicating to customers, but nothing that I would say is similar in magnitude to the fashion show... You can be sure we'll be communicating with customers through lots of vehicles including social media and various, more current platforms, if you will.”
Ok sidebar -- Victoria’s Secret listening to customers is great and all, but the reason many believe the brand is in such a mess in the first place is because they’ve flat out IGNORED their customers. Let’s talk about one of the biggest issues plaguing the brand: Diversity.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Rhianna’s recent Fenty X Savage fashion show here. Take a look at the recent runway extravaganza:
Now take a look at Victoria’s Secret lineup.
It’s not hard to see the stark contrast between the two shows. Rhianna’s got models of every size, shape, and ethnicity. Victoria’s Secret’s got…. Stick Thin Models.
Victoria’s Secret lack of diversity was a HUGE controversy late last year with then cheif marketing officer Ed Razek made a declaration about the lingerie brand: They were uninterested in adding any plus size or transgender models to their model lineup. Why?
Quote, “Because the brand has a specific image, has a point of view. It has a history...Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.”
Ed, by the way, resigned earlier this year because as you can imagine, those comments didn’t go over well. As Vogue put it, Victoria’s Secret is still “Banking on Bombshells,” or one specific image of sexy, when the rest of us understand that beauty comes in multiple shapes and colors.
It didn’t help that Victoria’s Secret’s own models were speaking out against the brand too…
Bella Hadid earned those coveted Victoria’s Secret wings in 2018, which should have been a highlight of her career. But just last week she told Vogue that she never felt sexy on the glittery runway. Instead, she only recently felt comfortable modeling in lingerie for Savage X Fenty.
Bella said, “Rihanna’s amazing. For me, that was the first time on a runway that I felt really sexy. Because when I first did Fenty, I was doing other lingerie shows and I never felt powerful on a runway, like, in my underwear.”
And I mean, it shows on the runway. Look how confident Bella looks on Rhianna’s stage!
Now, look how different Bella’s vibe was at her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show debut in 2016.
Turns out most of us agree with Bella: it’s freeing when we get to decide what makes us feel sexy, rather than have a company decide for us.
The revelation showed in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show ratings. Last year, a mere 3.3 Million people tuned in to the annual event -- the lowest ratings ever, and only half of what the show received in 2018.
And listen, the “ratings” or sales in the store have been on the decline too. Customers not only want to SEE diversity on their screens, they NEED diversity in their products cause, shocker… most women don’t look like supermodels, and they certainly can’t wear a bra made for one.
So instead, customers have flocked to places that offer a range of sizes that fit all types of bodies. Start up lingerie companies like Third Love and Adore Me are flourishing at the same time Victoria’s Secret sales have been declining. As Third Love co- founder Heidi put it:
“Change is being forced by more women and more companies.”
Yup, women are putting their money elsewhere and no longer buying the image Victoria’s Secret is selling.
    But what do you think?
Will you miss the annual event or are you more excited about the new wave of lingerie like Rhianna’s Savage X Fenty? Not gonna lie, I didn’t tune into the last VS show, but Savage X Fenty?! We had it blasting in the office while we danced along cheering.
But let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

DuuH Stop labelling the brand transphobic. IT IS NOT TRUE. Their former CMO made those offensive remarks in an interview backstage at last years show, 1 very old man in the midst of the chaos of the show. He wasn’t thinking straight about how his comment could hurt the brand and the company put out an apology for his comments. He has also recently retired and VS now has mostly women working as part of the creative direction team. VS isn’t transphobic, their former CMO is and he is gone now. They actually have a trans model working for them regularly now - Valentina Sampaio.

There is no diversity and that thin image is not sexy it promotes unrealistic and unhealthy images of what women are supposed to look like. When you love yourself and you love the way you look you won’t be overly sensitive or insecure over some skinny toned models. I’m considered “thick” I have junk where it’s supposed to be and just cuz I may be thicker than these models it doesn’t mean I hate this show I actually love watching this show cuz it’s a once a year kind of thing and they sell stuff in everyone’s size. Too many insecure people ruining things that are for entertainment, yeah they could have added plus size models but they have a tradition with these skinny toned models and even if that’s not right it’s something they don’t want to change.

They are not receiving hate. Their sales just declineD. If they market to bombshell beauty its fine. But ignoring an untapped market for other types of women is seriously not a good business move, and its up for grabs for anyone to capitalize. Rihanna saw the potential and it works. VS only sells to skinny women, some brands only sells to plus size. Rihanna sells to all of those types of women.
VS declined because a lot of people stopped buying, the hate only comes secondary.

It's not that people think good looking people are triggering, it's bc there are a range of people that VS is not targeting. Just bc you uplift different body sizes, doesn't mean you think being stereotypically beautiful is bad. Fenty did a great job at doing just that.

  • @laurenbianca
    @laurenbianca 4 года назад +71

    I... I... I've gotta say this....
As a curvy and non white (sadly I guess that's what ethical means these days), I used to love VS growing up. The colours, designs, music. Most of all the powerful women that worked so hard to earn their wings. Hours of training behind the spotlights, working hard to earn something.
It was ruined when they brought in the hadids, Jenner, baldwin- who got into the industry because of privelage (their families) and then got onto the prestigious vs runway simply because of Instagram followers. They thought it would expand the brand but...
When the show was about humble hard work behind the scenes into a magical runway walk (how the models felt, and how we felt watching our favorites) - that was special, that was a form empowerment. Woman celebrated for their hard work.
As a little curvy pre-teen that in all honestly wasn't in the best shape, they inspired me to love myself enough to work hard for a healthier body (I never wanted to look thin (just not my preference) , I just wanted to be healthy for myself) .
Problem is most 'curvy' people these day won't accept they need to make changes because of what's happening to beauty standards.
WHY is society shaming thinner people??? Why must there be a bigger girl everywhere we go?
If there's a woman's hockey team people don't protest to have a man in it.
How can we shame people who worked hard (like Romee Strijd - a super role model)
& in some cases: How is eating all the pizza you want, developing diabetes and then getting on the runway being praised?
The other day in the mall, there was a photoshoped clearly obese lady on a spread in the display window for an underwear brand. "it said celebrate yourself or something" I was honestly so confused..
THAT IS NOT SELF LOVE. and it is so damaging to teach young girls that they don't deserve more for themselves. I feel like people can't say the world gets them down when actually their own energy levels are bringing them down because they don't eat nutritious meals.
(I feel like people want to be curvy like Kardashians but don't realize they got their with working out and liposuction and implants. That's another toxic story 😑)
But Let's be honest, Rihanna wasn't ever so into diversity and plus size until she became plus size after losing her trade mark ponde-replay abs and started loving cheetos a bit too much. Easier using her empire to make everyone accept weight gain instead of working out. ( just being honest)
Yes the brand directors had issues with pushing a certain type of look (extremely tall and thin girls) I think what they needed were a few girls who were not necessarily as tall (but still model tall ) and had a little more muscle definition and also others with a little bit more meat on them etc - Curvier but still healthy.
The show was about putting in extra hard work, not the digestive system putting in extra hard work to break up the consumption of too much sugar and carbohydrates.
I'm sorry to the thinner girls for people telling you you need to eat bread. I'm sorry to the curvy girls for people telling you your too big. I'm sorry to the borderline and obsese girls for people telling you - "you don't have to change - you are perfect" perfectly imperfect but you derseve to love yourself enough to respect your body, change unhealthy habits and be in good physical health for yourself.
Yes we are all beautiful in our own way, but if a thin girl is anorexic- changes must be made and if a curvy girl is heading to obesity - changes must be made
    There I said it.

Things were good and fine before social media because everyone minded their business and there was no such thing as those SJW. As a skinny girl its nice to see girls who dont have much on them because it makes me feel normal. EVERY body type deserves to been seen and celebrated. There can be different fashion shows for different body types. HOWEVER they should definitely provide lingerie for all sizes and not say that these girls have "the fantasy body."

Exclusivity really stresses the idea of 'fantasy' and having to work hard to become beautiful. I understand if its showing people with more curves than usual but once it becomes 'everyone is a model' that's not an ideal message to send out to a society that does NOT run like that. Everyone is NOT always successful, everyone is NOT always going to get what they want, so showing stuff like this teaches people that they think they can get whatever they want. If they want to promote all-sized women, they should also promote all-sized men too, from tall to very short; fit to plus-size.

You have to be gullible if you think that inclusivity/diversity is the main reason for the show cancellation. Big compagnies don't care about this. The main focus is cash. For many of them, inclusivity is a marketing ploy. In this "woke" society, this how you gain popularity and stay on trend. Victoria's Secret, despite being awful, was at least honest.
The compagny has been struggling to find a steady bussiness plan since day one. The brand goes back and forth between gaining money to the verge of closing its doors. The marketing is the main issue, especially during the last few years. After 2013, the quality of the shows went downhill. Too much artists (it is not a concert!), their "models" are totally clueless and don't get me started on the fashion. While the chief marketing spoke about "fantasy", the runway is far from it. Behind the scene, things are not better. No one associates Victoria's secret with quality or good customer's service. In 2018 more stores were closed. The brand is in debt, Ed Razek's statement was just the nail in the coffin.

      Preach.
VS isn’t a thing for “anorexic girls” like I read somewhere.
Their models look most like the average than some others and their plus size too. Indeed they sell on purpose the most common sizes.
They promote a healthy lifestyle, especially angels because they look like it the whole year while other models change themselves to enter (Some get a bit skinnier even if they don’t need to just to be sure but that’s actually ruining the face of the brand. Most angels aren’t the same size).
The “perfect angel” measurement(not every angel has them) is average (Gisele and Adriana have it).
I think that people don’t understand how to change themselves properly. I’ve seen an article of a girl who years ago, when Miranda was still an angel became anorexic because she wanted to look like her but seeing her pictures she looked more like her in the before picture and let me be honest but I thought she that she probably lied because she became the opposite of Miranda and the model was only an excuse. (Sorry. That’s what I thought because it truly was strange to be obsessed over someone but not enough to get information about their diet).
People don’t inform themselves even a little. They would casually putting weight on if they wanted to look like a plus size model. It’s not that hard to google “diet” in 2000s.
Also, they say it is toxic for teenagers but the Pink section is very diverse and adapted to them because in teenage years bodys are even more different but when we grow up we are all taller and that’s how the body changes.
I feel really sorry for the brand too.
Also because many people are shading it just to praise Fenty but don’t open their mouths to other lingerie brands. I feel like some are even “bullying” the brand which is not so funny. It’s shady.
I do think that the brand should change, but shouldn’t promote too many big models unless healthy. They should add some sizes (bigger and flatter) and let smaller people in the runway. But they must remember about the good catwalkers first.

I never bought VS lingerie (disappointed by their website and the reviews were not that great), but the shows gave me the confidence to buy sexy lingerie for the first time, feeling super beautiful in it and even modelling...in my bedroom!

The VS Shows were the best during the late 90s to 2000s era. The best part were the models look sexy bombshells. They did had some diversity of their models back then but not as much. Also the show production was much better during their early years. When they start bringing singers performing on stage, that became a distraction as the models walk. After 2010, the girls tend to look less bombshells, less curvier and look more teeny boppers. Adriana Lima was only responsible to keep the show alive during the last decade... but as Adriana retired last year.. that was the end also for the VS show. Many people watch the show just because Adriana is there.

I just want a storefront that I can walk into. I’m confused as to where to shop now. I’ve looked at the Fenty x Savage site, and I haven’t ordered yet because I’m always weary of online shopping. I found the show to be so iconic and they were all about ‘natural’ beauty and pure talent. When they started to bring in insta famous models like Kendal, who absolutely have no stage presence I tuned out. She got in because she was Kendal Jenner and not because she was up with the best. She wasnt working hard and from small countries trying to get a break like all the OG models and it showed! And soon as they started gifting just anyone who had a big following a place it turned to trash and it just showed money and power will get to anything and not hard work or natural talent.

Yes, these lazy women want to bring down a brand instead of workout. It's funny that I would say this because I'm over weight, but I'm a former high fashion model that modeled Paris Haute Couture so that's probably why I don't hate beautiful and thin women. I've been a caregiver to my parents is why I've put on weight but I will eventually be able to put myself first again some day and work out but the women that hate VS are mostly just lazy people that don't want to work to achieve a fit body.

She only spoke up about it until she opened up her own business
Why didn’t she speak on it the moment she thought of it?
The same thing happened with her fenty make up line
Like she said she wouldn’t do the Super Bowl because it treats black people unfairly
So why support the whole fashion industry that also treat bigger women unfairly
Rihanna is only doing this for the money and to make her look good, and that’s fine

First: I'm glad most of the comments here concur to thr idea that people ARE too sensitive. It's not like the models are all WHITE, so VS DOES have a sense of diversity, and while the models are all "skinny", VS manages to produce bras of VARIOUS sizes. No? Also, yes "beauty" can be many things BUT no matter how much we try to change the perception of "beauty", we all know deep inside that "beauty" &" health" is going to be associated with "skinny or toned body". I think Victoria's secret is just promoting health and beauty in their own way. Yea it's their branding. If thicker people don't like their branding, they have the choice to shop somewhere else. If you dont like it, you don't like it. Victoria's does not need to change. They did not do anything wrong. Not everything needs to evolve with others.

It’s VS’s decision to be exclusively for skinny girls, just like there are plus size stores, there are ones for skinny girls.I don’t see that big of a problem. These women have beautiful genes,so if they want to walk the runway and show it good for them. All people are beautiful their own way, tall, short, skinny, curvy, black, white,ALL OF THEM.But some brands want to stay exclusive to certain things,Fenty will do its thing,VS will do it’s thing.Don’t like Fenty-don’t buy it,don’t like VS-don’t buy it

  • @rvsone1629
    @rvsone1629 4 года назад +14

I honestly don't see an issue with not having plus girls on the runway, most fashion shows are using literally the same models and nobody has an issue with that. It's practical to use the same size when you only make one for runway in case somebody drops out. So there's no excuse in not hiring more transgender and POC.
Where VS has missed the train is that they keep mostly bombshell push up bras when the world moved on to bralletes and not keeping diversity of sizes in the stores. It's good that guy resigned though his comments were disgusting.

I get that people don’t like that Victoria Secret has a specific image, and they are very specific with their models. I definitely do understand that people can get jealous of these models, but like damn I don’t understand why Victoria Secret can’t run the way it wants. If they wanna have an image so be it. I dont think it’s fair they r getting this much hate. From experience I’ve seen so many women in love with the store and with what they create. There is a brand for each type of costumer, VS always was know for selling fantasy and luxury with skinny tall models. But now everything is about making everything for everyone because if you do something for an specific market other people will feel excluded. I extremely thin and tall (not because I wanted it, I was born this way) and I always saw the VS angels as role models, girls that looked like me but in a healthy way, and I always admired them and had the idea that If I world a little hard and gain that weight I could be like them.
Now the Fenty brand doesn’t represent me at all, the looks are to crazy and I should eat to my dead to look like one of those models, but I don’t hate it and want it to include skinny girls, I just watch it for fun ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @rachellemcleod2045
    @rachellemcleod2045 4 года назад +1

I feel like the comment section is misunderstanding the problem. It isn't that a thin body is triggering, or that their hard work and effort isn't acknowledged it's that it's only celebrating ONE body type. There's plus size models who train just as hard to, there's trans models who have also worked just as hard. For victoria secret to say, we are marketing to only a select few is unfair, because EVERYONE IN ALL SHAPES SIZES BACKGROUNDS should have the right to see themselves represeted, should have the right to feel sexy. Victoria secret implying that ONLY thin girls are the vison is extremely harmful. It isn't that seeing these gorgeous women is offensive it's that, they make up a very small amount of the population genetics, lifestyle, backgrounds, so much goes into a persons body and fat and body types and we should be living in a world where all bodies are represented. It's 2019, these girls are beautiful, but so are plus size women, so are trans women, and that needs to be represtened

Theres absolutely no reason to compare a show like rihannas to the VS show. Theyve been doing this for 25 years and survived this long cause they followed the same procedures ever since. I feel like nowadays people think anyone can be a model and that display of skinny models personally attack them to be exactly like them or face discrimination. Its your own fault for being sensitive. If everyone can be a model, the professionals who actually sacrificed a lot for the modelling industry are completely discredited. Being a model is being fit and the winner of the genetic lottery. Thats literally the job description and if your’e against those requirements, dont try to change the career because you don’t fit in it and find one where you do fit.
