  • Todays video features a visit to the Churnet Valley Railway, for their winter steam gala. The highlight of the gala is always the trip up the steeply graded Cauldon branch to Ipstones. The branch is only used on a few occasions throughout the year, so its always worth the visit to see the engines working hard up the majority 1/45 & 1/59 gradient.
The engines on show were, Great Western 56XX no. 5619 (making her final public appearances on the CVR), The Collet Class 5 was also given an unassisted run to Ipstones, while doing a Re-creation of the Swansea Railway Circle "Rambling 56" Railtour run in 1965.
The gala would also see the return of the United States of America Transportation Corps S160 no. 6046, returning fresh after long repairs at Tyseley. The Polish TKh no. 2944 "Hotspur" also makes a brief appearance on the first train of the day out of Froghall.
Good to see the event well attended and a good show put on by the CVR. I hope you enjoy the video.

Good stuff Liam, terrific sounds from the locos. It'd be great to see an S160 on the mainline one day, great locos

+acw71000 Thanks Austin, great sounds always guaranteed on the Cauldron section. An S160 on the mainline would be a great sight ! I think the Jacobite route would be an ideal place at first.

Very nice footage Liam, and really good performances by the locos! the S160 is a handy Loco have around for those steep banks, although 5619 put in a typically plucky show for a relatively small Loco. Nicely captured and edited as always! Best wishes. Ken

+Ken Browne Thanks Ken. Good to hear from you. The S160 does a good job on the hillier sections. It's amazing to think that 5619 has the same power output as a Black Five. Thanks for watching & commenting. Regards, Liam

+locomotive67 Was a bit chilly in the Staffordshire Moorlands Dave ! The S160 Does look & sound the part. Tyseley have done a good job on her.

Notoriously sure footed GWR loco's doing what they do best. 56xx Taffy tanks along with 42xx , 5205 and 72xx were built for slogging it out up welsh valley lines with coal wagons and spoil hoppers. No surprise with a good fire in that 5619 just thumped its way up the hill like its just another day.

Last time I saw this line some track was missing! Has it been put back in now right through to Caldon Low? It was quite a shock seeing an empty trackbed!

No, I don't think so. That section of line is owned by the Moorlands Railway, I think.

An LNER A4 Pacific never visited the Churnet Valley Railway. Why is that?

I see the smaller engine ie 5619 took the same load up the hill as the much larger yank engine surprise surprise, loved the sounds though

+Jim Young Believe it or not Jim but 5619 is a class 5 loco, putting it on par with a Black Five. The S160 is in a lot better shape than it was 18 months ago. Thanks for the comment.

+Marsh Steam Videos™ no wonder, they were used to hauling coal trains in Wales most of their Lives, but still a good effort up those slopes
