It's just so cool that there is a Victorian novella about the Salem Witch trials. It makes sense that not having an emotional engagement would keep it lower on the list; I was thinking yesterday about just what exactly makes me love Victorian literature and one thing that stood out is that it's overall extremely emotionally engaging, I love that when I read it both my intellect and emotions are engaged. 💜
It is a really interesting book, even though not as emotionally engaging as other books (such as Wives and Daughters which in my current reread nearing the end is making me cry every other chapter!)
Wow. I SO wish I was a more critical reader like you - I love when you make this type of video where you delve into the story and subject matter as you've done. Great!
I’ve been enjoying this series so much! I haven’t read any Gaskell but oddly this seems like the one I’m most drawn to. I didn’t realize the Salem Trials were something British Victorians might have been interested in!
I can't wait for your number 1 Gaskell novella so I can start there. Also looking forward to your discussion of Mary Barton because I have the book on my nightstand for almost a year.
I just love watching your Videos. I have Elizabeth Gaskell Books on my list of Books to read on Goodreads. Looking forward to more of your Videos like this one. Are you still in College - University - Are you still Majoring In History? What Book are you Currently Reading? Have a Nice Day - Evening - Morning Happy Reading 📖📚
Thanks, she is definitely worth a read :) I'm no longer a student - I now work in publishing. I'm currently rereading Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell and reading Salem Chapel by Margaret Oliphant.
Books and Things - Oh Okay - That is great that you work in Publishing! I am so happy for you! If I ever get my two Books finish that I am reading than I want to Read a Elizabeth Gaskell Book. Enjoy re-reading your two Books. Happy Reading 📚📖
I finished this yesterday and just cannot get it off my mind. It had a major emotional impact on me - my heart ached for Lois after finishing the book. It was like watching a train wreck - you know what is coming but cannot look away. Any recommendations for happier Gaskell fare? I feel like I need some time to recover from the misery conveyed in this novel - yikes!!!
I have read only one of her novellas, Half A Lifetime Ago. The writing was good but didn’t like the deep sorrow after reading it. Will try to read her other novellas

I thoroughly enjoyed this video! You are so clever!
I've read a couple of Gaskell books and plan to read the rest of her novels, but you've sold me on this one too!
I hope you enjoy it - it's certainly an interesting read.

I finished Lois the Witch last night. Found it very fascinating! Could definitely related to your review.
Thanks Linda :)

Try Cranford?
@@katiejlumsden thank you!!

But the book made me reflect upon the best arrangement for those mentally challenged and their families
I would recommend her other novellas too - that one isn't my favourite, and there are so many great ones.
Books and Things sure, I will definitely try out The Moorland Cottage next, the one you highly recommended 😊
