... and this is why I drive a manual! Honestly, I think that the automatic transmission is one of the greatest feats of engineering ever, yet hardly anyone ever thinks about them. Thanks for the tear-down, and I will now understand an automatic better when I hop into one :)
+Jonathan Vandagriff Shit is still overpriced.... when the dealership quotes you less with a warranty than the tranny place.... fuck them. 2199 for a torque converter and pump replacement.... GTFOH!
Im rebuilding my Ford c3 for my 1929 Mercedes Benz! the kit was 200 $ and we just finished (we think) it will work now it wasn't going into any gears. were going to put it in this weekend and hope for the best
I work at a transmission shop. I'll tell you it's no joke a transmission is very complex and they will have many variance of the same transmission. Get one check ball, spring, snap ring or clutch in the wrong place and you will have a world of trouble. You have to have a strong understanding of how these components work to properly repair them.
I did this after mechanical engineering. Most mechanical engineers start out doing some mechanical projects- not anywhere near mechanic leve but can fabricate stuff, but maybe 20% are into systems and haven't done anything mechanical.
Thank you for making these videos!I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering, my professor only shows us the stick diagram about the transmission. So, even I finished the course, passed all the exams,in the end of the semester, I don't really know how the AT really works. But thanks for your video, I can relate to my class knowledge to a actual parts. And finally how it really works!!!!
Eric, this is one of the best, most thorough automotive videos anyone has ever made. Frankly: no one is this generous with their time or knowledge. Seriously, thank you for doing this. And please do more auto dissections.
Outstanding vídeo, for a person that says not AT expert, your performance is just staggering, I have learned a lot. Thank you and best regards from Brazil.
I have a car that has been down for 3 years. Really had no ideas where to look. These videos helped me tremendously. Can't wait til tomorrow to finally get started. I don't buy parts until I have an understanding of the system I am working on. You helped me sooo much.
I love the way that you explain technical complications. Great videos.great explanation on how parts move and work together.best transmission videos ever.
It was very satisfying to find the cause of the problem at the end, after all this intriguing disassembly. Even when I only understood a small part of it, I now have a much deeper appreciation for the whole auto transmission design
Honda uses accumulators to act as shock absorbers between clutch activation. The dampening effect will cause the oncoming clutch to slip a little longer, effectively increasing the clutch engagement time. This softens the shock when changing from one gear range into the next.
I am currently a technician although not an auto technician. I still deal with the parts like this including gears, solenoids, seals, bearings, retaining rings, and etc. Really a technician job is to fix a problem, we do typically understand it. Although, it is the engineers job to design it and make sure the purpose is happening. I do currently wish to become more of an engineer which would not be too difficult, although I really need to pickup more mathematics. It is amazing to see how engineers come up to put all the concepts together. But be thankful for the scientists making the discoveries, the engineers designing it, and the technicians fixing it.
You have the uncanny ability to take the mystery out of everything I wondered about. Watched both 1 and 2 four times. Now, I am tired, but there is always tomorrow night. Thanks again.
Man so many years after you are helping people I thank you for this video I really want to learn to repair these....Thank alot man greatly appreciated.
What a great tear-down and analysis. Thank you. The mind it takes to engineer the valve body alone is astounding. To integrate it into the various other components is an engineering marvel! It obviously takes a well integrated design team. Then the idea has to go to casting and machining. No wonder automatics are so expensive. I'll stick with manuals myself, those I've refurbished without to many issues.
Watched both parts. Was really cool to see what's doin inside the mystery 1500$ box. I also learned why I am not changing the fluid on my 01caravan w 159,000 miles. My wife's has 47,000. It may not be too late to do hers! Thank you Eric you dirty man.
And please believe me when I said that your video have taught me a lot because I even have the same transmission but giving a little problem right now. Much respect to you bro💪
Eric, you explain very thoroughly and just the way a layman needs to hear. Not that we can break things down like you, but now I know exactly what happens to gears when neglected. Superior instructional video!! Thank you brother for sharing the knowledge and keeping the love for the craft alive.
+Jah Bless I think Hondas have their own proprietary design more similar to a manual transmission but could be wrong. IIRC also the 3rd gear tends to overheat on the v6 accords that have the faulty 5 speed design.
I was looking for a thorough understanding of AT, and this video pretty much clarified my thoughts on the entire setup. Comprehensively done. Thanks a lot!
Good description that adequately caters to the understanding of automatic drives. Gives a good insight to the control elements as well as transmission from torque converter upto delivery of power at the wheels through the trans axle.
Thanks again Eric. your videos are invaluable to me. Was just looking to see what I would be getting into in changing a transmission filter on a 96 G20 and ended up watching and LEARNING more than I ever knew about automatic transmissions. Keep up the great work man.
My mom has a 2001 Odyssey. 240k miles. Currently on its 4th transmission. #1 and #2 failed normally, just wouldn't shift. #3...the transmission seized while she was driving and exploded fluid all over the engine. Left her stuck on the side of the road in a cloud of smoke. The engine is still in perfect shape today and has never had a problem. To Honda's credit, they helped her out even though the car had 220k at the time.
I learnt more things looking your video than working 1 week in an auto repair shop! Probably because the only thing they made me do was changing cars' brakes, oil and tires! Keep up the good work! +1 subscriber :)
I got a kick out of that, as an Industrial Technologist one of my duties was checking the tolerances on the clutch plates for CAT 789 drive transmissions, you'd love the size of the planetaries in those.
I had a transmission failure a few months ago on a Mitsubishi Verada (Galant or Diamante for USA market I think)... While driving suddenly it died, no drive to the wheels, no reaction when selecting different gears. Replaced it with another transmission, but thanks to this video now I'm pretty sure the oil pump failed. Shame I didn't open it to check! Thanks for this GREAT tear-down!
Excellent video ... Thanks for sharing .. Never know what was in a transmission - but now I can say I know a few buzz words :) Lever - Park, Drive, Reverse, 1, 2, 3, Low Valve Body - (Brains) - valves to allow pressure to various gears (directs oil pressure to different galleries) opposite pressure (Differential pressure); Pump - (Heart) Oil Pressure, Accumulators (Hydraulic cousin dampers like shock absorbers), Governor, Bands, Clutches and 2 sets of Planetary Gears (outer housing center is the sun gear, center Planetary Gear, outer Ring gear)
this has been very helpful to me , I just have had a gear shift problem but i know where to touch because replacement is better than buying new gearbox, this good work
Good video dude, I'm trying to learn about automatic transmission because they are the only real mystery that remains, aside from absolutely every single other thing regarding the universe and everything in it...
Eric, I have been watching some of your videos for some time now and I tell you what; your tutorial is one of the best and I commend you for that. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Weh! What machanics are all about!!!! Thank god, I hear! "Thiers intelligence within the world" Sounds alot better than.....................................
Thanks Eric for yet another very tutorial Eric the car Guy video. Once again you've knocked the ball right out of the park. Now, about that torque converter video.............
Thanks for posting these vids! Good info to know, which also reminds me, I better change my oil soon. Hope it'll run well or even better after I've changed it. Mine shifts into reverse pretty hard everytime, my truck is 20 yrs old fyi, and during that time when the previous owner had it, I dunno how many times the oil's been changed. I've never changed it yet since I first got it almost 2 yrs ago now, if I remember correctly, man I better do that soon, wish me luck!
Eric I really enjoy your videos, thanks!! I was pulled into this wonderment about automatic transmissions because my wife's inherited 2011 Buick regal with a 6t40 transmission recently failed, and within 2 months of the dealer changing the ATF fluid at 60k miles, probably for the first time. It just stopped working in D and all forward gears, reverse still worked. So frustrating and expensive, and I suspect the fluid change precipitated the failure. We are having an independent shop swap in a remanufactured transmission as I write this. Good lord those transmissions are complicated beasts!!! Sooo many points of possible failure, especially for the 6T40 which seems prone to early failure for various reasons like broken snap rings destroying delicate internals. The dealer said there were no metal particles in the old fluid, but they also said they don't flush anymore, nor do they replace the filter, which for this transmission you have to remove from the vehicle to get it open enough to access. Getting into the transmission itself to diagnose was the next step - or just replace it, which after watching this video and a couple more on the 6T40 seemed like an easy choice! Thanks again. Do you have something similar for CVT transmissions?
for many yrs I wondered just how exactly an automatic transmission works ..this video really gave me good insight and a better understanding to the internal components and dynamics to an automatic transmission ..thanks XD
Fascinating video. I’ve fixed my own cars all my life, but really had no idea about the workings of automatic transmissions. I found it amusing that they use planetary gears and bands much like the earliest manual transmissions did. :)
eric you are the best! you inspiered me to go and get my GED and im headin to lincon tech this fall for auto tech! i love your story your a true american and a true blue coler guy! keep up the good work your my hero man. stay dirty!!
Thank you for this detailed and interesting video. I figured automatic transmissions were complex, but the intricacy and number of parts inside one is incredible. Considering that GM developed the first ones 70 something years ago, it was really impressive innovation in engineering.
Honda had to rethink everything because GM owns the lions' share of the patents on automatics. Sad, because supposedly the Oldsmobile plant shut down because they never could come up with a decent auto tranny.

Although briefly you explained things very well and now I have more knowledge on what is what and how the functionality works from the engine to the transmission and ect. Thanks man!
December 26, 2021 Happy Holidays! I found you today Eric and take you so much for the auto transmission tutorial. Like Hannah Hunt, I too drives a manual car (2015 Nissan Micra S). I think around 200k - 250k, need to replace the clutch disk on my Micra. About 112K mileage now and no problem(s) so far. Takes me from point A to B. Be safe Take care Be healthy to you all. Again happy holidays!
sir u r video help me too much as i am working as a mechanic .i repaired so many autotransmisson wow now i can repair with knowledge of all parts inside the gearbox....so thanx u so much for ur sharesir.......kumar frm india.
Excellent video. Really amazed by the complicated nature and operations of an automatic transmission. I always thought they were identical to manuals, except for the flex plate and torque converter. Turns out they are not. Again, really awesome and educational video. I learned a lot.
for anyone that may be trying to rebuild: if you do that rag trick between two gears MAKE SURE you clean out all the torn bits that come off the rag. i personally just hold the gear with a rag and don’t let it spin in that manner and there’s a lot less lint that can get inside the transmission and that’s always a plus
Those are wet clutches just like in any manual motorcycle transmission. The only thing that makes it confusing is the actuation and release mechanism which is the valve body and solenoids and "what not"...and "what not"...
Wow!!, there is a whole bucket of magic in that transmission lol :-) Looking at the complexity of the system, the fluid is the most important thing to affect the way it works and life of the unit. Sounds like only the best quality fluid should be used and way before it gets dirty. Smashing disection eric :-)
Also I was going to ask is it possible to put a reverse manual valve body on an automatic transmission while its still mounted up to the car, without having to actually drop the tranny and do it on a table? I lack the necessary equipment (transmission jack/stand and work space) to do the latter.
Very well explained, although I understand very little English, I was able to understand very easily the explanatory sequence and the learning order of the functions of each component or elements of this automatic transmission, especially that of the valve body. Thank you so much. El Cuchi Kenny Rendiles from Venezuela.
Good video on parts of an automatic transmission and how they work. Eric the car guy easily explained. Keep up the good stuff and of course stay dirty. I know I will.
Hey Eric, thanks for this videos man! Awesome! But how do you even manage to reassemble all that? I would have to take notes and even photos before starting the reassemble.
... and this is why I drive a manual! Honestly, I think that the automatic transmission is one of the greatest feats of engineering ever, yet hardly anyone ever thinks about them. Thanks for the tear-down, and I will now understand an automatic better when I hop into one :)
I am a gearbox technician yet I hate driving....I take the bus home...but now when the bus changes gears...my head moves with the gears
I thought that transmission work was overpriced, now I know that good transmission guy deserves every damn penny.
Ya same here lol
+Jonathan Vandagriff Shit is still overpriced.... when the dealership quotes you less with a warranty than the tranny place.... fuck them. 2199 for a torque converter and pump replacement.... GTFOH!

They are fascinating. I went to school to become a mechanic, but I love how all this work so I return back to college to become a mechanical engineer.

i know it is kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good site to watch new tv shows online?
@Maddox Callum i dunno atm I've been using flixportal. just google after it :P -aydin
@Aydin Hudson thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it !!

Holy shit... lose interest?? I'm glad you're doing these videos! So informative and so interesting.
this guy is very sharp! I always wanted to learn auto transmission! but I never found such a good tutorial!!!
Eric, I've watched many of your videos, but this was the best yet. Enjoyed this teardown immensely-you're top notch-thanks!

This video totally cured my curiosity - i will never open an automatic transmission in my life :)
I just finished re building a 4T65E. I learned a LOT in the process. 2005 Monte Carlo. Works great now

If you are in the Denver area and need transmission service, Detroit Transmission. These guys are unbelievably helpful, and they do great work.

auto's are pretty much a fluid computer, solenoids as transistors and the ball bearing valves as diodes
High voltage diodes are called valves.
accumulators are capacitors
I can literally taste trans fluid while watching these two videos.
That's even worse than smelling it.
I'm watching this because of my slipping Honda Accord v6 and wow you hit the nail on the head about the valve body
+Jah Bless I think Hondas have their own proprietary design more similar to a manual transmission but could be wrong. IIRC also the 3rd gear tends to overheat on the v6 accords that have the faulty 5 speed design.
This video being 10 yrs old, the quality of video is great
Could u do a tear down video on CVT Transmissions?
I was looking for a thorough understanding of AT, and this video pretty much clarified my thoughts on the entire setup. Comprehensively done. Thanks a lot!
Good description that adequately caters to the understanding of automatic drives. Gives a good insight to the control elements as well as transmission from torque converter upto delivery of power at the wheels through the trans axle.

Eric the car guy is awesome. Thanks for being a great teacher!
He should teach at a college. He's thorough, honest and interesting.
700,000+ views on part 1 and fewer than 200,000 views on this one. Most people probably gave up after trying to understand what the hell is going on.
Kody Montes The part two is not as interesting, because I'm not really understanding it!
Kody Montes
That's odd. Part 2 is what made everything click for me.
Andrew Rice still not sure how the fluid direction in the “ ant farm” works., great video though
Weh! What machanics are all about!!!! Thank god, I hear! "Thiers intelligence within the world" Sounds alot better than.....................................
Thanks Eric for yet another very tutorial Eric the car Guy video. Once again you've knocked the ball right out of the park. Now, about that torque converter video.............
amazingly simple yet beautifully complex

eric you are the best! you inspiered me to go and get my GED and im headin to lincon tech this fall for auto tech! i love your story your a true american and a true blue coler guy! keep up the good work your my hero man. stay dirty!!
I'll have to say this is the best understanding of Auto transmissionx
wow.. so much engineering into that one component. who would've thought. my mind was literally blown by what humans accomplished.
Thank you for this detailed and interesting video. I figured automatic transmissions were complex, but the intricacy and number of parts inside one is incredible. Considering that GM developed the first ones 70 something years ago, it was really impressive innovation in engineering.

Hey Eric. Fellow Ohioan here from the Dayton Area.
If you ever want to do a Manual Transmission dissection, I have a busted one from my 91' Festiva that you can use, only thing I would ask is I do need it back because it is repairable. But if you do break it more than it already is, no foul, it has just been sitting on my garage floor for the past 7 months.
Really loved these videos! I've never fully grasped how automatic transmissions and clutches worked until now. And, I think now I have an idea of what's wrong with the transmission in my car.
Eric your videos are never to long.. love'em
I'm ready for part 2 which ties typical problems to the parts shown. Cool to see how the clutch fried.
and now, let's put all the parts back together... great video, by the way !
I hope one day the transmission will be re-invented to just work forever, because they're so complicated and expensive, and those friction parts don't last long
Eric thanks for being so awesome and doing this automatic transmission dissection. It really is cool to get down and dirty and open it up. Although briefly you explained things very well and now I have more knowledge on what is what and how the functionality works from the engine to the transmission and ect. Thanks man!
Hello from Russia Eric! It's absolutely wonderful video! Thank you for the great explanation of an automatic tranmission.
Great videos! I love cars but I never took the time to learn about everything. Your videos have taught me more about cars than I've ever learned
Excellent descriptions. Thanks for dispelling the mystery of how this does what it does!
It's really damn cool to learn about gear ratios. Nice job at teaching about it.
I'm not sure about the others but I think that you made this very easy to understand!
you're the man Eric, learned a lot from this video series. 2 thumbs up!!
Thanks for taking the time to do this, I've always wanted to know how an automatic transmission works. Great vid, & keep up the good work!
sir u r video help me too much as i am working as a mechanic .i repaired so many autotransmisson wow now i can repair with knowledge of all parts inside the gearbox....so thanx u so much for ur sharesir.......kumar frm india.
Great video, loved it, gives me a new understanding and respect for my mechanic and the engineers who design this stuff.
Thank you very much Eric. Great video. Finally I understand how those things work inside.
Excellent video. Really amazed by the complicated nature and operations of an automatic transmission. I always thought they were identical to manuals, except for the flex plate and torque converter. Turns out they are not. Again, really awesome and educational video. I learned a lot.
Amazing video Eric! Always wondered what was going on in the valve body. Your brain analogy was very appropriate.
for anyone that may be trying to rebuild: if you do that rag trick between two gears MAKE SURE you clean out all the torn bits that come off the rag. i personally just hold the gear with a rag and don’t let it spin in that manner and there’s a lot less lint that can get inside the transmission and that’s always a plus
Thanks for the video. My carolla kick down cable is sticking, and its always good to see the inside of the Trans before pulling the pan.
thanks Eric wonderful video
sound effect at 20:20 is amazing!
Those are wet clutches just like in any manual motorcycle transmission. The only thing that makes it confusing is the actuation and release mechanism which is the valve body and solenoids and "what not"...and "what not"...
great video! i love the way you explain everything. Chrystal clear!
Great and entertaining job of explaining a very complicated subject. Thanks
Wow!!, there is a whole bucket of magic in that transmission lol :-)
Looking at the complexity of the system, the fluid is the most important thing to affect the way it works and life of the unit.
Sounds like only the best quality fluid should be used and way before it gets dirty.
Smashing disection eric :-)
I learned a lot from this. Thank you for you upload and taking the time to make this informative video :) It was helpful and fun to watch.
Also I was going to ask is it possible to put a reverse manual valve body on an automatic transmission while its still mounted up to the car, without having to actually drop the tranny and do it on a table? I lack the necessary equipment (transmission jack/stand and work space) to do the latter.
Dang, mad respect for transmission engineering!
Half one in the morning and I now want to remove my gear box... it would never be going back in the same. Great video
Very well explained, although I understand very little English, I was able to understand very easily the explanatory sequence and the learning order of the functions of each component or elements of this automatic transmission, especially that of the valve body. Thank you so much. El Cuchi Kenny Rendiles from Venezuela.
Thanks Eric!!! It’s very interesting and really informative! Good job !
Excellent! Very good. Thank you for the video. I have always wondered about automatic transmissions, and this was really cool to see.
