LaWanda Page and Redd Foxx were very close friends from the time they were pre-teen age. They attended school and grew up together in St. Louis. Later on, they both entered the field of comedy separately and performed stage acts. Page was unfamiliar with the ins-and-outs of producing a television sitcom; she had been more accustomed to performing in nightclubs. One of Sanford and Son's producers stated to Foxx that he will need to fire Page and hold auditions again for the Aunt Esther role so that taping could begin. Foxx insisted Page play the part and he threatened to walk away from the show if she was let go. The producers stuck with Page, who would go on to become one of the most famous television personalities of the 1970s and of course Foxx and Page were one of the greatest comedy teams of all time.

Such a good show. I'm 22 but my dad watched reruns all the time. Shame most of my generation will know nothing about this show

Amen. But you can show your friends or maybe start making shorts or something like that to push it back out there. No youngster wants to listen to this "old guy" so I guess it's all on you now. Sorry for the burden, but that's what we do lol

Polo, the writing for Sanford and Son was pure genius. It was just comedy. No one was offended; you just laughed! There's no way anything like this show or All in the Family would be on TV today. Thank goodness for reruns!

YOU are SO RIGHT, I never missed an episode of Sanford and Son OR All In The Family. They were so funny and the writing was brilliant. There is not one "sit-com" today that I find as funny as the ones we had back then. NO one took offense at anything.....it's sad that we can't have that kind of comedy now. You are right and least we can find them on re-runs or on DVDs. I particularly LOVED when "Aunt Esther" (Lawanda Page) was on an episode, LOVED her character.

They never showed Sanford & Son here in the UK. If I recall correctly it was based on the british tv show Steptoe & Son but it was changed quite significantly for american audiences.

Loved this show and All in the Family and the Jeffersons. All three shows were created by the geniuses Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin. The shows were so popular in the 70s and 80s and people were always talking about them. You are right though. These shows would not even be allowed today. They all had great actors and comedians and they covered topics that were controversial but kept people talking and laughing. I miss those shows. They really were funny.😅

Harlem Nights is one of my favs too!! Halarious. There's prob not a lot of vids of his shows out there, if any. Got to go back and just listen to the masters at work on their albums. I started listening to one of Richard Pryor's records yesterday. Hysterical. Yes you will miss a lot of the physical comedy but your imagination turns on and you could almost see them on stage. I never really thought of how special imagination was until the world stopped using any.
Anyway, great reaction, Polo. If you want some comedy gold on video, check out Richard on the Sunset Strip if you haven't already. The mafia story is one of my favorites! ✌🏼
