  • Internationally-known jazz pianist & composer Ray Kennedy battled Multiple Sclerosis for decades unbeknownst to bandmates, friends & fans. His death on May 28, 2015, at the age of 58, came as a shock. Since that time the former St. Louisian has been remembered the world-over.
“A Celebration of the Life & Music of Ray Kennedy” features 7-string guitarist & vocalist John Pizzarelli with Konrad Paszkudski, piano, Martin Pizzarelli, bass and special guest Bucky Pizzarelli on 7-string guitar. Recorded LIVE on July 17, 2015 at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis this concert honors “one of the gentle giants of Jazz”. Ray’s brilliance & kindness are remembered through music, stories & laughter. To quote Billy Crystal, “Play on Captain Gentle”.

This is Charlie Brown and Snoopy sound, Brat Pack brilliance, and bebop behavior at it’s finest….thanks for the artistry and the kind send off for one of the best Jazz ever offered the world in a humbly bright dance across the keys in Mr. Ray Kennedy. Thank you to the Pizarelli’s, Bucky, John and Martin, and the fine pianist in his own right, Konrad Paszkudzki. Love is Music….and to the one who shared this…we love you as well!

Words fail me in trying to say how magical this is. What a wonderful tribute to the one of a kind Ray Kennedy. So glad I got to see the trio live before he passed from this realm.

Gotta be 3 of the best musicians on the planet! Konrad knows the keyboard like no other and Martin is great as always on the bass!
John... what can I say? I have followed him for several decades now...his guitar playing and song selection is what I aspire to. I take my entire family to see them at Night Town in Cleveland..one of the great jazz clubs in country. John is one of the great story tellers and it makes his gigs priceless. He is what jazz is all about!

Wow, is right! Such beautiful music!!! Yes, Ray was the best, but Konrad is growing on me. John and Martin are the greatest, without doubt. So grateful to have found the Pizzarellis. And John is such a story teller. Just love him!

      So well said.
I’ve watched this almost through once, and parts three times. Konrad is a monster. Does a pretty good job of filing big shoes.

John Pizzarelli seems to be the only singer-guitarist who has the pre‐swing era jazz thing down. He's a living museum piece with the addition of an electric archtop guitar, an instrument that hadn't really come to the forefront until much later, maybe after WWII and the very end of the swing era. Then, that's IMO; I'm no musicologist.

Thanks for sharing this video. I have wonderful memories of the trio at the bistro in St. Louis. Ray was an incredible pianist and a real genius and kudos to Pizzarelli to honor him. I felt like I was at the Sheldon with you and I miss Ray and his music and the Sheldon. As you mentioned Ray was the musician and you were the show man indeed and it is obvious today. Konrad uses only one hand and has no feeling and no soul in his music. I don't know if you did it on purpose but if you compare your first half of the concert with the clips you showed playing with Ray the difference is way too obvious. In any event I am glad you honored Ray. There must be somebody out there that is better than what you have today.

I'm no fan of the ideology of the still living Hollywood superstars who made the great NY Italiano movies last century portraying the 20's and 30's, but John Pizzarelli would be great with some role in a movie to complement any such superstar actor.

    E....dici poco??
    Fantastico!!
    Ma che bravi, bravi veramente.
    I miei complimenti.
    c.castellano, Italia
........... what a rhythm, guys, what solos by John Pizzarelli, the Pianist and the double bass player, so tempting, overwhelming and provocative that, almost, they invite you to take one instrument, musical (... the first that happens in your hands) and clandestinely "join" the trio with a "solo", by tromba Strepitosa dizzying (.... alla "Randy Sandke", alla "Derek Watkins ", to Chuck Findley, to" Maynard Ferguson "to be clear), of those that" break everything "and drag you into an irrepressible song, to all" Dixie ", so exciting, that overwhelms everything and everyone (..... "including the public") in such an irrepressible momentum as to leave an indelible mark in the musical firmament of Jazz !!
And then, the music, of that sweet and refined, as everyone knows, is nothing but art, poetry, of that permeated with inspiration and imagination, of improvisation and creativity, of that which captivates your body and mind. and drown you in a sea of "Emotions"!!
    ....And you say a little??
    Fantastic !!
    But what good, really good.
    My compliments.
