The music wasn't all that interesting or enjoyable?? It's hands down the best and most creative soundtrack of the period in my opinion, especially the orcs.
Amen
he should mention that was 97 years so yea music was a gem! voice acting top notch amazing i fell in love thanks to warcraft 2
Definitely. I remember we actually used it as bgm for our warhammer battles at the time because of how epic it was, haha.
both are good.
Until Jeremy Soule was the best......
The music in Warcraft 2 is awesome, what are you talking about! One of the best videogame soundtracks ever, each song stands out as an actual composition, not just ambient noise.
The music from warcraft 2 was half of what turned warcraft from a dark, brooding gothic / medieval style to a childish upbeat colorful nightmare.
Yeah I almost lost my shit there. lol
@@Breathor The reason Warcraft 2 was so colorful was because the managers kept opening the curtains at blizzard, which forced the artists to make the artwork really bright.
exactly :)
seriously, i came into the comments just to call him out on this bullshit troglodysm. The soundtrack is epic and intricate... well, most scores are, but it's an amazing score nonetheless

Your stuff is so quality dude. This was great and I'm excited for the next one!
MandaloreGaming lol
I love it when other RUclipsrs love on other videos. So wholesome
I'm still waiting for this guy to make his Warcraft 3 review. I loves his content, as well as yours Mr.Mandalore.
He hasn't been uploading the third one yet.
Hey Mandalore are you gonna make a video on Warcraft 3 and the shitty downgrade called Refunded? AND possibly How to play the classic Warcraft 3 again?
Like with Eurobattle(dot)net? There's actually more then just 1 way to download and play in case 1 or 9 get taken down like Garena :( Still here's the link to a helpful video!
ruclips.net/video/zNQzEH4JgY4/видео.html
I was wondering if you could start an initiative to archive and update all the forgotten Warcraft 3 custom maps that have either been abandoned to old patches etc. OR have been almost completely forgotten to time OR lack of interest? OR literally any reason whatsoever? I really hope to play ancient maps but possibly with the 24 player cap etc. That would be cool!
I know of plenty i remember but don't have an archived map of etc. So I'm wondering if there's a chance to bring back everything that was lost? Like starting a movement to keep the game alive just to spite Activision and Blizzard?
Regardless thanks for everything Mandalore hope you start doing some cool projects again to keep games alive!
I know this is years late but the music in this game was an absolute pleasure and joy to listen to. It wasn’t there for background noise it was there to fill in for lack there of. The music started an industry standard for what games should sound like, and it fulfilled that phenomenally well. It’s one of the best soundtracks to have ever been created.
Agreed. I was there when this game was released and played it on release and the soundtrack and voice acting were top notch then and hold up today.
I agree. I can't fathom how one can dismiss this soundtrack as "background noise" when it's so lively and full of personality. Video game music nowadays (and even back when this video was made) is just some random orchestra and has no appeal to them, compared to this absolute gem of a game.
One noticable difference apart from the naval warfare and the lack of RPG elements is that resources scarcity is an actual thing and a serious obstacle in the campaign. I have emptied several gold mines thus far in my orc campaign and am constantly expanding in the search for more lumber. Compare that to WC3 where I don't think I ever had to worry about resources running out.
This game was my childhood. Good stuff and I’m glad you put this out there so more people can play this gem.
I do disagree with you in the music, but I know music is subjective so if it didn’t float your boat I’m not going to bust your chops :)
Bruh you lost me at the music. War2 music is iconic, really keeps you going for fighting
The reason you had such a hard time with Beyond the Dark Portal is because of the tactics you were using. You need to be agresive, much like you need to be aggressive in Frozen Throne, but to a greater degree.
In a lot of missions there will be one enemy that starts off very small. Usually your starting forces will be enough to take them out this one enemy at the start (with a bit of manoeuvring), but if you don’t take them out soon they will build up and constantly harass you to the point where you have to use all your resources defending and can never build up an army to attack (unless you just tower defence for hours on end).
Once you defeat this smaller enemy at the start, the remaining enemies can be dealt with using the more traditional tactics that work in the base game.
Loving these just because you're one of the few people giving old PC games a proper chance. My anticipation for the WC3 review knows no bounds.
I appreciate that, my man. Hopefully it won't take another 11 months.

As someone who loved playing Warcraft 3 years back, I had an interest to see the previous games in the series, but was always put off by their age. So these reviews have been a good way for me to see these games
going from warcraft 2 to warcraft 3 my eyes had orgasm
I think Warcraft 2 has held up pretty well. It’s the first game in the series that I played. I may be a little biased because of that, Warcraft 1 feels a little archaic.
@@cocomunga War1 felt archaic even when it came out. I had a friend who pirated his copy to my cpu, and then a year or two later I felt like, War2 came out and the multiplayer was incredible and everybody I knew was into it. Then I see this review, what, almost 30 years later, and he says War2 was developed in *one year* after War1? Shit, that meant I must've gotten War1 hot off the presses, and it STILL felt old to me then! Geez ya'll. But I did have a lot of fun with it, and War2 felt lightyears better after that slog for a year. Looking back though, I think most of what makes War2 worth revisiting for myself today is its charm. Bc War1 was so serious in tone, and War2 was hilarious, goofy sound effects, dopey voices, weird script quips, exploding critters... I was disappointed to see a lot of that go away in War3 and WoW, not entirely, but noticeably reduced.
90s-00s gaming was the golden age. people made games out of passion, and to make the best experience for the player. the money was the second focus. now look at reforged.... money first, game experience second, and you can instantly tell once you play.
It was only about three weeks ago I found your review of Orc and Humans, and excitedly looked through the channel hoping to find the follow up review. Imagine my surprise when about a week later you uploaded it. Hooray.
Thanks for taking the time to make this, it's much appreciated.
I hope you go on to do WC3, as when it came out I didn't have a PC powerful enough to play it!
Your reviews are extremely satisfying, keep up the great work!
It\s interesting to watch a review for a game that came out so long ago and compare it to reviews from back in the day. When this came out, it was awesome and the reviews reflected that.
Your reviews are pure gold :'D
Please don't wait another year to make a video on Warcraft 3. lol Loving these videos man! Keep up the good work, you're awesome!
I just found these reviews today and I have to say I love you neutral standpoint and the honest assesment (and the paint pictures that help visualize the story :D ). Even though I disagree on some points with you I have really enjoyed the reviews of the 1st 2 games. Great job and thank you!
I must be the only person who likes the naval combat in WC2.. It's one of the few opportunities to micro your units effectively in this game
You're back!
I love how you talk about the game like it is new XD
Great video, but i just have to say you’ve insulted the music. It’s probably the best RTS soundtrack ever. These songs still play in my head to this day.
Excellent review. The only thing that I completely disagree with is how good the music is. It's catchy, epic, and gets you pumped.
Oh shit son I've been waiting for this for forever.
I still play this on my PS2 thanks to backwards compatibility. Absolute classic and a good display of what Blizzard used to be about.
I remember when my dad built a Compaq computer using old parts and let me play Warcraft 2 back in 2006. It took me a summer to beat all of the original game, and 2 more years to beat Beyond the Dark Portal.
Also consider the jump between WC2 to SC1 in just two years. I would play the shareware version of this on my grandma's computer back before I had my own PC. Playing it and replaying it as many different ways as possible led to me really enjoying the drawn out nature of the campaign missions. Naval combat sounded cool, but finding that last oil platform to finish off a base or the hazardous task of attacking ground units made it a drag. That and the (understandably) low rate of gathering wood made the game slower than it needed to be.
Really SC1 was made all over again after people called it "warcraft in space", so the StarCraft we all know and love was made even more quickly, since they had to start over.
That paint art is great
I love your MS Paint Skills.
Also your commander from WarCraft 1 Human side, the guy you were - Yeah, he got killed.
What? You can absolutely still build walls.
Your channel is what I scour RUclips for.
In Wc1 you could only have 1 single town hall where resources could be brought to. You could only build a 2nd town hall after the 1st was destroyed. (*Stuff they missed, or forgot about, in this vid)
Wc2 and Heroes3 have such great/epic OST!
“Tell all your friends to buy Warcraft 2” does that mean we’re friends?
Yes, milord!
In wc3, I used to like building farms in a circle around the towers as a barricade, useful to prevent melee attackers/raiders! But not useful in preventing ranged.
Love the video and never played the expansion but myself having alot of knowledge of characters heros i recognized alot of them, that's cool to see that blizzard didnt make these characters up out of the blue!
Nice review for a very nostalgic game
Damnit, man, this is amazing! Oh yeah, Grom Hellscream! Good memories of this game back in the day. Played a lot of battle.net games and even ladder, which I can't say for W3. Not that I was really even all that good lol was just obsessed
30:20 that isn't 'randomly disappearing' it does that when you tell it to attack when it's already attacking. Is it annoying? Yep but it's pretty easy to figure out why that happens.
EDIT: Liked the video btw :D
What I hate about this glitch is that it's only with the ballista that this happens. It has three attack states (neutral, bolt drawn, bolt shot), whereas the catapult only has two (neutral, stone hurled).
@@halfthefiber Is the delay when switching targets any different between the two? Or is it just visual?
@@thecolorfox I think the delay is the same when switching targets.
The art in the manual was pretty metal.
this is some true quality content
it sucks that so many people forget these game's exist because WoW exists
Awesome video. When you said “defense that base” that wasn’t a WhiteRa reference was it? If so the video is even better than I thought.
These videos are wonderful. Looking forward to Warcraft 3!!!
Can we get a remaster / re-release of this? I loved this game and would like to play it again, but I don't have a copy anymore.
I must have spent over a 100 hours on this game and the map editor alone back in the day
It was a great game for its time. Played it non stop.

26:58 Holy shit it's an _actual_ Nether Portal! They even got the color right!
I enjoy both the music and the naval warfare elements. Although your specific critiques are not wrong
The first RTS I've played. I remember not sleeping that night, age 9 or 10. It was the shareware version, but who cares
Good Quality Content.. your voice is thrilling
Quality content. Upvoted.
Did you know that there were people working on a Warcraft 2 mod called 'Warcraft 2000 Nuclear Epidemic'? Basically, aliens would invade Azeroth and give both sides some high-tech weapons and tech to eradicate each other. Their plan was to wait it out until both sides nuked each other so they can swoop in and take all the resources for themselves. It also had some big gameplay changes like increased unit cap, the ability to select as many units as you want, no more oil, etc. The weird thing is that it was actually one of the first things GSC Game World, the creators of Cossacks and Stalker, worked on.
they never released?
Great review. Here’s hoping you’ll cover Warcraft 3 :)
Well I found your review of the game a really good one, maybe even the best and with lots and great content. I have to say that I don't appreciate very much that kind of art you made in Paint but I must say it really adds your touch and vision to the whole. With this I want to state a fatal flaw in your review... the music. I played this game for the first time when it came out back in 1996 and the music, even if at first it wasn't of my taste, it's something you grow on and need to be aware of its details, to this day I think it was greatly composed and get back to hear it again from time to time, it's always epic. I also played the orcs and humans campaigns from start to finish in the main game and then the expansion, no cheats. Hard and many times frustrating, maybe that's why I took around 3 years to finish everything. Still play it from time to time and if I get a friend or more for a Lan game in my old machines it's always a great experience. The game is not the best in its class for sure but when it came out nothing else was at its level in my opinion. You also have another subscriber! Cheers!
I miss this simpler time. Warcraft lore was not as convoluted as the lore we currently have.
You can make the troops follow your selected troops by clicking a troop member
Warcraft II was one of my favorite childhood games and while it has aged a bit, I still enjoy it. I played the first Warcraft game much later and I didn't like the first game to be honest.
Did you just call the Warcraft 2 soundtrack background noise? o.O
dude where are you
OMG, you sound like you played it for the first time ! How old are you? :D
Awesome vid thx
Your channel is way too underrated
I've learned that if you focus too much on the numbers , you'll lose sight of what you already have.
I get to make what I enjoy and recieve almost nothing but positive feedback whenever I do.
The audience I've gathered is wonderfully appreciative, and I too of them.
Thank you for your kind words, though.
I was so young when I played this game I just wasn't good enough to do it without cheats LOL I still remember a bunch of them, on screen reveals the map, deck me out upgrades every unit and building fully, glittering prizes gives you 10,000 gold 5, 000 Lumber and oil. There were other cheats but that's all I used
The Easter egg was the reveal of starcraft?
hey man this is some great content. please do one for warcraft 3 as well
My favorite Warcraft game.
After having played Warcraft 1&2 for the first time, I really get your point that W2 feels more tedious. I played through W1 with the help of a mouse-mod for commands, and could kinda enjoy it. Put playing W2 started feeling really tedious and I just gave up partway through the human campaign.
I also have to compare both games to first two C&Cs, and how these just have more Quality-of-Life-Features, that makes playing them today easier and enjoyable.
Great series.
the best game, music and characters of all time (with mega man 2, NES)
do u know how to download it for free?
You have to group your units so that you can move them by going 1a2a3a
Are you going to do Starcraft and Warcraft III?
I will do Warcraft III, but after that I think it'll be a while before I do another RTS. They tend to burn me out and I'm not so well versed in the genre. So no plans for Starcraft at the moment, but who knows?
I like what you are doing and I think it's great! But definitely if u never played StarCraft (or II) before, then I tell you u will LOVE the story (well, at least in the first one, the second one is dependent on u xD)
I still like how the graphics in WC2 aged. It's very cartoony which makes it cool, but not pixelated like WC1...it has its own special charm
Raducu2oo5 Yeah, but how does this game need a 486 and SVGA card? It looks like it would run on an Amiga 500!
Yes they are charming. I tried playing WC1 like 8 years ago and had to stop because my eyes were actually hurting.
I think Warcraft 2 looks better than Warcraft 3. War3 has these sharp edges from the polygons, looks terrible.
We arent compatible.
Where you been dude?
The thing I really don't like from Warcraft 2 that was still kind of a problem in Warcraft 3 was your reliance on gold. I always ran out of gold because I built a lot of defenses and bought every upgrade I could. Every time my base was attacked I lost at least one unit and it costed 600 gold to replace them. The towers were very weak against air and siege units, so you were spending a lot either repairing or rebuilding them. The upgrades were also very expensive, with the highest ones costing 2000 gold (meaning your workers have to make 20 trips between your gold mine and town hall). They give you plenty of lumber in every mission though, so I feel like lumber should be the emphasis of your economy just like how minerals are in Starcraft. If you didn't have to rely so much on a scarce resource, I think the game would be a lot more fun. I'm a bit ranty about this game because I just tried playing the orc mission where you had to rescue the dragons and I was bled completely dry of gold before I could even make my first big push. This was after only building 4 towers, 1 barracks, and 6 trolls for anti air defense. I poured the rest of my resources into tech, but still got obliterated because apparently top tier armor and weapons are still shit against gryphons and knights.
I think part of the strategy is knowing how much gold you have and what you can or can't build. But they should have a setting where you could build whatever you want without having to worry about gold even if it's just like a cheat code. It would be alot of fun especially since I'm no good at rts games (but I still love them).
I've been waiting for this so long men, what happened ,studies? :D
Part life stuff, part laziness, part just wanting to play other games instead. This particular video took somewhere around 80-100 hours to make. Most of that is just playing the game, but it can be tricky to allocate that around into your free time. Doubly so if you'd rather be playing something else.
I'm not trying to excuse myself. I am very lazy.
Good to see you were excited though, sorry about the wait.
Are you gonna play WC3 on hard or normal before making the next video?
It's higher on the list of videos I want to make but I can't tell you right now if it will be next. Only just finished this and the future is a bit fuzzy at the moment.
Lord Mandy sent me, make sure you repay him in full.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!
oh god, the way you say Sargeras lol
I say it the way they do in the game itself. They switch the pronunciation in the third game, and I'll be following suit.
Variabull I don't know what a "Sargeras" is but I respect you immensely for that.
@@Variabull Yeah, I was surprised at the change in pronunciation in WC3, lol.
Wait, Deathwing shows up as a hero unit for the Orcs?
Yup. And in the human campaign you play as Khadgar and Kurdran to go and kill him which you can see at around 28:17. (Tough it was later re-written that he survives.)
I'm just happy I found someone who agrees with me all these years later that the sea battles sucked (or was not as fun). I remember choosing custom maps in Battle Net that did not feature sea warfare.
I was thinking that looks so cool. Now I know better.
ty
How does it compare with modern graphics?
Same engine as Starcraft basically.
In my opinion the best warcraft game ever
You should do Starcraft! First truely polished blizzard game.
We want StarCraft! We want StarCraft!
I always loved warcraft as a kid but sadly I am nowhere near good enough to play online.
Yah Blizzard RTS Vs. AI and Vs. other players tend to be completely different beasts
To reduce the difficulty you really need to understand how the economy works in warcraft 2. More workers help more. Try to have 10-11 workers on gold and 8-9 on wood as quickly as possible and "Beyond the dark portal" out of a sudden doesn't seem THAT hard anymore. Combined with 3-4 barracks and you're laughing. When I played it over 20 years ago I couldn't get past the fifth orc level of BtdP, this time I've steam rolled through. For me it's one of the best games ever but that's nostalgy for you.
Warcraft 3 review?
I really hate campaign modes in RTS lol, so thanks for doing it for me. I just can't do it since I like to turtle up and then have my massive army while cutting down every tree in the game lol
That's how I play RTS games. Lol. Probably why I suck at them but it's alot of fun.
your drawings make this the funniest warcraft shit ever XD
This was my first RTS ever! than I got into command and conquer and dude 2000.warcraft2 is like you first girlfriend you never forget her even if she was a cold hard bitch.
I love WC2 so much but yeah the boats kinda suck (or rather, the campaign's over-use of naval combat).
Also, I usually try to respect people's opinions, but what you said about the music was bad and wrong. That Orcish harpsichord is the sexiest thing ever.
Well, you did not cover the whole game at all! WarCraft II is all about its multiplayer capabilities rather than its single player ones.
You should have devoted a few extra minutes at the end of your video to discuss about its multiplayer. Which still now is alive after 23 years...
Also the ships do introduce several different strategies to the game and can be very fun to play with on some maps.
Finally, there are a few stronger ai developed.
He did mention the multiplayer lol. He also doesn't seem very good at the game (his words) so I doubt he would have a lot of fun in the multiplayer anyway.
Here's how i remember War2 multiplayer: Orcs builds ogre magi and cast bloodlust. Humans build mages and cast blizzard. Repeat until one side wins.
@@yamchadragonball6983 There is the third playstyle; Be a 12 year old kid that have managed to cheatcode his way through the campaign, yknow, the kind that types cheatcodes into the chat in the MP games.
I once got killed in a game because it bugged out after my team had won, and my teammates blame me because I sucked :D
You are risking on getting a bunch of dislikes for shitting on the music in the game. The music is pretty damn good in this game and it sets you into the battle mood.
I hate that I associate this music with pet battles
The music was not enjoyable? Wow.
