Hannah's Departure. That story was perfectly positioned as the first of the 1000 Years of Dreams you can find. It set the tone perfectly. And it broke me. I don't think I've ever cried so hard at a video game as I did reading that story as this music played.
I always read Hannah's Departure, no matter what time of day or night I'm playing, and it always, always makes me cry, even after reading it at least ten times
I hate when people pass this over as a cliche jrpg without playing long enough and being patient to understand its depth and watch the story unfold. The main character isnt just emo and a loner he's just...old. Hes seen it all and he's lived 1000 years, many just wandering without purpose and its not like he could kill himself. Kaim cherishs the small things in life because he knows how short and precious it is. Besides once his suppressed memories start to return he gains some personality especially around Sarah and his grand kids. Heck even Jansen mentions wow...youre like saying more than 2 words for once. The only thing Cliche is the villain who's pretty typical.
@@lethalassassin1754 Well said! Gongora is really the only cliche. Lost Odyssey embodies everything that's usually missing from the genre. It's a near-masterpiece! Personally, Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy IX are my top 2 JRPGs. Both have unfortunate stigmas belying near-masterpieces. Both are considered generic sadly.
@@lethalassassin1754 I WILL say, however, at least a couple of positives about Gongora. He works as a perfect foil to Kaim and the other Immortals. The only problem is we don't have dreams or cutscenes showing his descent into megalomania. It's only hinted at. They came to the world of the Mortals naive like a child to the struggles of humanity (not unlike the Genomes of FFIX) however, the difference is, they come from a virtual utopia not unlike Heaven in classical mythologies like Christianity for example. Also, it's akin to the premise of Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land (Sakaguchi LOVES to blend Shonen Anime/Manga with Western Fantasy and Science Fiction even if it's simply theming or a plot convention after all. Unlike Kitase where it's Star Wars all the time. I jest but it's kinda true.). So, we see characters that combines literary ideas like sentient Artificial beings, deities and aliens with how the Immortals are presented. They're a sort of hybrid and that adds to the uniqueness to the game.
This game helped me process the fragility of life. It hurts thinking about it but it also makes me happy knowing that one day I'll pass away and people will miss me for I am not immortal.
@@moshninja2630 except Aerith's death didn't hurt as much as other FF deaths. Tellah or Galuf's death punched me way harder in the guts. Sakaguchi's best way of pulling your strings is FF IX coz feeling bad for a dead person is hard enough already. FF IX telling you that you are dying , you could die every single day , that you will be nobody in this world and that it is a fact. Hits way harder
One of those memory flashback actually made me cry. I was like 15 at the time but still. I was reading it and felt so sad. Forgot which story it was though.
I've only ever read one memory more than once, and that's Hannah's Departure. I read it every single time, and no matter what time of day or night it is, I always cry so bad. My family makes fun of me for it lol but I don't care 😂😭
The first notes get tears in my eyes. The rest is just crying and memories i cannot controll. one of the saddest songs i've ever heard. It literally broke me for years. It still has the same effect.
This absolutely broke me into pieces. I streamed this and was glad my camera and microphone weren't live. I was bawling like a baby. I didn't expect to be in my feelings right out of the gate like that and with Uematsu-sama composing this, even now just hearing it brings tears again.
first playthrough I found the gameplay lacking but the more I thought about it, I realized that it was the story and thousand years of dreams that glued this game together. It was well put and made me question the very essence of life
Man this sure wakes some wonderful memories. I totally love that game also that scene was freakin' sad. Made me cry, too. Especially the part with those flowers in the end. *sobs*
This is the most amazing game................ I don't even like reading but I read all the memories.... super well written and amazing music and story.
Not trying to be dramatic, but I had covid in June, it was pure misery and I went to the ER three times, I almost sent this video to my sister to play at my funeral.
The game is good, but the star of the show is the Memory short stories and the music for them. Especially, as the game is not easily available, I would read/watch the Memory videos on RUclips. They're the stars of the show and they work without playing the full game. I would recommend playing the game, but my suggestion is another option.
They say Man dont Cry.....well FUCK that, this Scene was like a Emotional Overloaded Baseball Bat right in my Face and made me cry like a little Girl, yea i admit that and have no Problem with that, and i know if i would see that Scene again, i would have Tears in my eyes again. This Game was and is one of the BEST Games that was ever Created, such a Wonderfull Masterpiece.....now WHERE the Hell is Lost Odyssey 2?!
When I first saw the intro of this game and this song came on. I almost cried. Then this song came on again for when I won't say because of spoilers but that scene made me cry. Beautiful song!
those who read or watch To your eternity or Frieren go find a way to play this game and this is also one of the first stories that tells us the sad truth about immortality
@Firionel It isn't, but in terms of design philosophy and spirit, it very much is. WIth Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu making their signature known as we experience this game in it's entirety, those of us who miss the era of JRPGs established by those two from FF1-9 are immediately greeted by a familiarity and nostalgia, and a story that, if it _were_ a Final Fantasy game, it'd easily be in the top 3. Many of us view Sakaguchi's swan song being FF9, but Lost Odyssey fulfils that role more appropriately, since he's only been making mobile games after this game. I can only hope he gets the opportunity to make another full console/PC RPG that... well, isn't on a mobile phone.
WARNING: This game breaks you. If they ever make a remastered version for Playstation 5, or PC..... 😵💫 I don't think the kids of today could handle the emotions.

Jonathon Bartos it broke my heart
I always read Hannah's Departure, no matter what time of day or night I'm playing, and it always, always makes me cry, even after reading it at least ten times
You're not alone. I wept too.
It also plays in with the Sin Stone and the story called the little liar
Agreed. It still makes me shed a few tears every time I read it, even after all these years... "White flowers" is also one of my favorites.
They really nailed humanity and the reality of immortality with this game. From the funeral to the stories, they really mess with your emotions.
DemonicCathode agreed

Underrated game of that year for rpgs for sure...
Yes!!!!!!!!!!
until now. yes it is. the last good turn based rpg.. well octopath 2 are not bad too.
This game has a legendary soundtrack. My god, all these years later I still want to find them again just to feel the same feelings I did long ago.
1,000 years that no one would want to remember...saddest game of this generation.
Sakaguchi was a legend for pulling with your heart strings, remember he was the producer responsible for killing off Aeris/Aerith

Why would this need a sequel? Maybe this time it'll be on six discs.

that scene plus the end of the first disc was emotional since I lost some dear almost 3 yrs before they released the game
