It's interesting that you note that the vocalist, Dennis Rondum, was lining up with the snare rather than the melodic instruments and how that was something you haven't heard before. The vocalist is also the drummer and if you listen to a lot of Spawn of Possession's first album where he did vocals and drums as well you will notice something similar (example: Church of Deviance).
Very cool information. It isn't very typical to hear about vocalists being drummers and you can definitely hear how that experience melds into his singing technique.

I found Archspire in 2018, and Archspire was my new favorite band that can compete with Spawn of Possession. I'm so glad he is reviewing one of the most best Technical Death Metal bands in history.
I'm a big fan of the analysis you do! It's not just a reaction video, you really go in depth and that's more of a rarity for these kinds of videos! If you do more Spawn of Possession, I think you'd really like analyzing "The Evangelist." Rhythmically it's the most impressive song I've ever heard!
Hell yeah some TechDeath love! SoP are a classic, would love to see more tech in this channel! Would suggest some bands Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge GOROD - Elements and Spirit VIRVUM - Illuminance First Fragment - Le Serment de Tsion Beyond Creation - The Deported
The shift in the sound with the solo imo is because the solos on this album were written remotely by a player named Christian Muenzner (who is a really popular player in the sub-genre, hes played in Necrophagist, Obscura, etc). So I assume they sent him material and he wrote the solos based on it, and his choice/direction when playing/writing solos is usually phenomenal in tech death. That’s actually one the best things about his playing; namely his solos make songs *better*. But on this album, not being with the guys and writing with them, not hearing perhaps all of the finished arrangements (my guess), or whatever it was as I’m only guessing, led to solos that not only didn’t sound right in tone with the songs, but in most cases just didn’t sound right for the song at all (which is shocking coming from him). Something tells me that he had very limited material or time to work with. Oddly there is one song, the first song, where he plays a solo like he always does, aka its frigging amazing and makes the song 10x better. It also oddly sounds far better in tone and volume, etc etc, like normal. That was the “single” type song for the album when they announced it after years of being dormant. I think he rushed it (or was rushed), or didn’t have enough time or material to work with, because it just doesn’t sound right on most songs and that’s the opposite of his playing. On many songs on this album the solo is the worst part and that hurts to say.
Spawn of Possession were always among THE techiest of tech death bands. Incurso was my favorite album from them because it finally introduced more melody and atmosphere, and this track is a perfect example of that. I haven't listened to them in ages, though. My latest obsession in that genre is Ulcerate. I'd highly recommend Everything is Fire or Stare Into Death and Be Still.

I'd love a reaction to Anata. Not sure what track. It'd have to be off "Under A Stone With No Inscription" or "The Conductor's Departure". Any suggestions from commenters? It'd take me ages to decide on a track. Great reaction by the way! Been hoping for a Spawn of Possession track. 👏
@@rexlupis I'm with this, or A Problem Yet To Be Solved. That album is one of the best albums of all time, in my opinion. Conductor's Departure has some really interesting melodic ideas and has some interesting compositions, like The Conductor's Departure track, as @Holstorr Sceadus mentioned, or even Downward Spiral Into Madness. I'm seriously torn. 😥
@@fatbat9031 I think conductors departure refined what they did on under a stone... The counterpoint on that album is insane. Pan to left or right then listen to the song with the opposite pan and its so different.
I have actually done that before...unintentionally 😄. I do agree with you though. While "Under A Stone..." is my preference, that's only due to my history with the album. Conductor's Departure does indeed have a lot more melodic ideas, especially the counterpoint, it's delicious. I guess Brian would probably prefer "Conductor's Departure", or at the very least have a whole lot more to say about it. So maybe something off that album would be more suitable. I still love "Under A Stone..." though 😉
I am a newcomer to this channel, but based on some of the songs you have reviewed and aspects of the music you liked and noted, Apparition immediately came to mind. I'm glad others are on the same wavelength.
You'll probably get used to death growls. I hated them when I first heard them as a teenager, but because there were so many great, interesting bands using them I kept listening and over time they grew on me and now I enjoy them, especially when done well. I think it just requires a brain switch to listen to vocals similarly to how you would a distorted rhythm guitar as opposed to an emotive vehicle for lyrics.
For more melodic counterpoint in their music I'd suggest you listen to "In My Own Greed", the middle section is just perfect. They often work short sections of counterpoint into even their most dissonant tracks like "Bodiless Sleeper".
just want to repeat my recommendation to listen to Cast Down The Heretic by Nile other tech death bands worth checking out (with song suggestions this time) include: Decapitated - Invisible Control Martyr - Carpe Diem Necrophagist - Only Ash Remains Psycroptic - Cruelty Incarnate
SepticFlesh is a good example of orchestral symphonic death metal. Their guitarist Chris is an orchestral composer and writes all their orchestral parts.
Could you react to "Chromatic Chimera" by UneXpect please? The version from their album "In a Flesh Aquarium", the version from "We Invaders" is just the piano track, so it's less interesting.
Unless I picked a track where that didn't happen often then I must have missed that. Thanks for pointing that out to me I'll try to keep it in mind for when I return to Archspire.
Totally down a different lane here, but 'Aspiration - After the Burial' or 'Vicious Reforming of Features - After the Burial' are 2 really really fun tracks that use some wild syncopation and polyrythmic styles.
Please react to Fallujah - Sapphire or Plini - Cascade. Both are incredibly atmospheric pieces. Plini is an instrumental band that relies on mixing modern prog metal with jazz fusion, and Fallujah are tech\prog death metal that have got some pretty unique lead guitar playing and exceptional riff writing.
Aside from some superficialities this band is nothing like Archspire. Archspire is like a book of musical exercises. Spawn is a composition. Thanks for doing this track.
Well said. I still think SoP is the most avant-garde and original metal band in decades. Still feel kinda empty without a hope they drop another album.

Glad to see this song on your channel. I really prefer the songs on their previous record Noctambulant. I would LOVE to see a reaction to Artificial Brain " Synthesized Instinct" or anything of theirs to be honest. I agree on your opinion of the vocals over the music. Ive been listening to metal for 30 years and I can dig death metal when its done right, but my issue with tech death is that the music is too good for the vocals. TO me they never really work well. Look at First Fragment. Amazing music. The vocals just make it so i don't want to listen. Many bands are like this. Anyway enjoyed the review! I did like this album btw for the most part. One example of a great metal band that has an awesome vocalist is Benighted. He has 5 or 6 different styles of vocals and they fit well with the well composed metalodies. Maybe check them out.

Another like yesterday. Loved the instrumentals- the genre inspiration blended with some death metal stuff, the sheer technicality from all instrumentals. Personally not a huge fan of only death metal vocals. Might get crap for saying this, but I find them bland and not as expressive. I’ll keep listening to this band though because I really like the instrumentals. Maybe they’ll grow on me! Any recommendations for more death metal with interesting genre mashing??
...you should redo >The Evangelist< as you have overseen several aspects...e.g. the theme in the beginning being taken up again later in the song, also by different instruments... ...the song is not monotonous, pls check and pls stop with things like counting chords... ...the band split up 2017, last album 2012...twothousandandtwelve... ...you cannot imagine what this meinst, I guess... ...I ve been in snd with metal for 37 yrs now...I've lived the eras...I've experienced the stets and changes, transformations, coming up and vanishing of genres n subgenres...so, keep respect...SOP have been so incredibly important for the TechDeath genre... ...just do The Evangelist again... ...it's a no go to me, on the one hand to not being firm with Metal esp DeathMetal or TechDeath and in the other side give critical (not cynical) reactions... ...there has to be competence also, ideally competence first... ...no offense meant... ...just keep on going , I'm subscriber...
This song is infinitely better following along with the lyrics. Terrifying.

Great. I think there's not a bad song of spawn of p..i personally preffer the two previous albums. Give an opportunity to the cabinet álbum, and do a video, if you could, analyzing one of the songs, or the álbum 😁. 👋
I think The Evangelist would have been the better song of that album, but Apparition is great as well.
Revocation- dismantle the dictator
You should check out some melodic death metal bands like Black Dhalia Murder
I've got you! ruclips.net/video/PYUiArN6Io0/видео.html
Car Bomb - Sets
You should react to Epilogue by Fleshgod Apocalypse if you want to hear more Symphonic metal music! Different flavor though
Have you done Obscura yet?
Yup, twice in fact. Weltseele and Diluvium
Please react to Mechanical Phoenix by Unexpect. Or really any of the first five tracks on Fables of the Sleepless Empire
Carach Angren maybe?
You should never expect worse from a band like Spawn of Possession or Archspire...
Only if its Nickelback.
Any recommendations for more death metal with interesting genre mashing??
react to ULCERATE, ANY SONG
Seconded.
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Fury
nutty band and song
Check out Architects of the Apocalypse by Soreption
...you should redo >The Evangelist< as you have overseen several aspects...e.g. the theme in the beginning being taken up again later in the song, also by different instruments...
...the song is not monotonous, pls check and pls stop with things like counting chords...
...the band split up 2017, last album 2012...twothousandandtwelve...
...you cannot imagine what this meinst, I guess...
...I ve been in snd with metal for 37 yrs now...I've lived the eras...I've experienced the stets and changes, transformations, coming up and vanishing of genres n subgenres...so, keep respect...SOP have been so incredibly important for the TechDeath genre...
...just do The Evangelist again...
...it's a no go to me, on the one hand to not being firm with Metal esp DeathMetal or TechDeath and in the other side give critical (not cynical) reactions...
...there has to be competence also, ideally competence first...
...no offense meant...
...just keep on going , I'm subscriber...
Cool video. Love that band, but their song The Evangelist is even better imo
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
please react to Inferi - Cursed Unholy. Off of the Remastered album!!!
Nobody does orchestral death metal better than SepticFlesh; that's not even an opinion, that's a fact! 🤗 Check'em out! 👍
Could you react to The sun the moon the stars by Aether Realm? It's such a beautiful song
